Rouge Bunny Rouge – Nest of Plenty Spring 2012 – Some swatches and first impressions

by Sonia G.

With their new Spring 2012 look “Nest of Plenty“, Rouge Bunny Rouge are launching a new range of eyeshadows in a refill format.
They are also launching a pallet concept with a Duo and Trio Eye Shadow Keeper, I cannot show them to you here today since I did not order them, but at this moment I have other alternatives to keep the eyeshadows.

This collection consists of 9 refills, six are new shades and the other three are from their current bestselling range (I did not order Unforgettable Oriole so instead, I will show you the one I already had)  :

The new shades :

  • Lilac Reef Curassow – Pale lilac with iridescent effect
  • Trumpeter Koel – Dark lead-grey with lilac-blue iridescence
  • Bohemian Waxwing – Iridescent bronzed champagne
  • Olive Violetear – Smokey Olive with a satin finish
  • Golden Rhea – Iridescent pale gold, pure and simple
  • Umber Firefinch – Iridescent dark umber chocolate

The “repromotes” of the best-selling shades :

  • Unforgettable Oriole – Delicate, metallic white gold
  • Solstice Halcyon – Semi-matt mauve beige
  • Abyssinian Catbird – Metallic bronze with golden highlights

This is how they are packaged :

You may want to be careful when opening the refill since the pan may slide out and fall.

The refills are smaller than the potted version :

The refill costs 16Gbp, contains 2g (0.071 oz) of product and the potted version contains 2.4g (0.084 oz) and costs 22Gbp. The refills don’t come with magnets at the back :

Since I did not order the RBR eyeshadow keepers, I will show you some options :

  • The Mac old quad style compact is fine, so is the Mac 15 palette, both can hold the RBR refills. But the RBR don’t have magnets so you will need to stick a magnet at the back if you want to consider these two options.
  • The Mac new quad compact is too small, you will not be able to store them in these.
  • You could also put them in Z palettes and then you won’t need magnets for the eyeshadows.
  • The other option, cheaper, is the palette you see at the top left, you could keep 12 RBR eyeshadows and it’s already magnetized so you don’t need to stick magnets onto the eyeshadows. They cost approx 5 usd on Ebay. This 12 pan palette can hold Mac, RBR, Urban Decay, etc…

All the eyeshadows shown in these 2 pictures above are only from the RBR collection, as you see, the pan does not fit at all in this new style Mac quad.

Here are some swatches of the RBR refill eyeshadows :

….any dupes ?

I have tried to find similar shadows so that you can have a better idea of the color but not only I wasn’t able to find dupes, but the pictures are not very good at all, sorry about that.

RBR Bohemian Waxwing is the baby of Mac Satin Taupe and Burberry Rosewood… if you are a taupe lover, you need this.

Bottom line

I don’t regret having ordered all of them, I love neutral looks and I will be able to use absolutely all of them on a daily basis.
My favorites and the ones I will often reach for are Solstice Halcyon, Bohemian Waxwing and Umber Firefinch. I could not order Solstice Halcyon before since it was always out of stock, I am happy I could finally get it with this new collection.

Overall, I was expecting more pigmented eyeshadows but don’t get me wrong, the pigmentation is fantastic and the texture silky and easy to blend. When you first swatch them, some may look chalky on the fingers but when you lay the shadow on the lid with your brush, it’s another story, the finish is like pure silk, they don’t crease, they don’t fade and they last the entire day.  I have only been using them for about 3 days so I don’t have much experience but I can tell you they are also foolproof.

As soon as I can, I will take better pictures since the ones here are not very good I am afraid. If you want a particular eyeshadow swatched side by side with a Mac or any other, please let me know, if I have them, I will take pictures for you.

I will also update this post and will tell you more in detail how they all perform in a few days… I absolutely want to recreate the Nest of Plenty eyeshadow look that I love and I also still need to try the Lilac, the Trumpeter and the Olive, can’t wait 🙂

EDIT  :

I have just created the Nest of Plenty eyeshadow look on me, I was a bit worried that it would look too cold for my warm skin tone or completely not appropriate for my age, I was prepared for the worst.
I had 10mn to get ready, it wasn’t much but the changing weather and the beautiful clouds inspired me and reminded me of this look so I really wanted  to match the clouds and decided to give it a go… 🙂

Well, the result was pretty much exactly the same colors as in the promotional picture below. I used the same products as they did, but instead of ‘Wishing for Wings’ for the inner corner, I used Alabaster Starling (next time I will probably use the same C Major as for the brow bone) and instead of the 2 kohls they mention, I used RBR Calypso with the Nars Via Veneto for the waterline.
I have dark green eyes and what I loved about the look is that even on my eyes it was panther-like, very sexy actually, I am going to do it again for a night out but I will just draw a slightly thicker line with Calypso.
I did not use a base so the intensity of the colors faded after 5 hours but even faded the result was still sultry and looked really nice, like it had intentionally be done like that.  I had no time to take a picture before I left the house but I will do that next time,  it’s not the last time I do it for sure. I am very impressed how easy, quick and foolproof it was to recreate it.

Here is the promotional Rouge Bunny Rouge picture :

And the RBR details for creating the look :

The soft smoky eye make-up can be achieved with the application of our lead grey Long-lasting Eye Shadow WHEN BIRDS ARE SINGING… ‘Trumpeter Koel’. Take the Large Shader 003 and dust the colour with its lilac blue iridescence over the movable eyelid starting directly onto the lash line up to the crease. Blend well with RBR Crease Brush 011 upwards, to the temples and inner brow area. With the Mini Shader 005 frame your eyes completely with the same colour.

Pale lilac is the perfect addition so apply our eye shadow ‘Lilac Reef Curassow’ along the upper crease line blending over the movable and upper eye lid using the Large Shader 003.

Dust the light iridescent lilac of the Long-lasting Duo Eye Shadow ‘C Major – A minor’ underneath the eyebrows to highlight the brow bone.

‘Wishing for Wings’, the light nude mauve Loose Glitter Pigments FIRE DROPS highlights the inner corners of the eyes with its silvery reflections. Either dust with your fingertips over your skin or use RBR Crease Brush 011.

Frame your eyes with the frosted blue-violet FELINE GAZE Eye Khol ‘Vera’ and smudge if needed with the Mini Shader 005. The Eye Khol ‘Salome’ is perfect for applying to the waterline.

Finish your eye makeup with a coat of our Modelling Mascara WITCHERY for upswept lashes.

EDIT May 28, 2012

I have played again with Rouge Bunny Rouge Nest of Plenty look… This time I had the time to take 2 pictures and I will add them to this post.

But please keep in mind that I am not a professional and that I am in my 40’s 🙂

I don’t have any RBR foundation yet… so I am wearing Burberry Sheer No 3.

Eyes : Same eyeshadows as used in the Nest of Plenty look, with the exception of the inner highlight, I used Alabaster Starling. It’s not exactly the same look as in the promotional picture, it’s just an inspiration using the same eyeshadows.

Highlighter : RBR Sea of Tranquility
Blush : RBR Manet
Contour : Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate 01

Lips : Lip Liner RBR Vasco and lipstick Suqqu Creamy Glow in EX-04

In real life, the intensity of the eye look is more noticeable and dramatic but in the pictures you cannot really tell how beautiful the lilac reflects show up…

HI Sonia,
Do you know if RBR is available at any counter in London? What about their HQ in Regent St? I have such a hard time buying makeup online bcos a lot of colours simply dont show up on my tan NC35 skin.
Thanks
Mandy

No I don’t think they are available in any counter I am afraid.
I believe that you have the possibility when you create your profile in Zuneta, to give them your skintone and they will automatically highlight the best colors for you, and this applies to their blushes, eyeshadows, etc…
On the other hand, they are very pigmented, what kind of colors are you interested in ?

I am liking Abyssinian Catbird, Bohemian Waxwing and Unforgettable Oriele a lot!
What do you consider your most fav brand of eyeshadows in general? The one with the best pigmentation, long lasting, silky feel etc.basically the one you could not live without!

The ones you picked are wonderful, Abyssinian Catbird, Delicate Hummingbird, Bejeweled Skylark, Veiled Lyrebird and Blackpepper Jay are probably my favorites RBR but I love all of them…
I think that on all brands there are hits and misses, my favorite brands for wonderful quality eyeshadows is RBR, Hourglass, Kose Addiction, Suqqu, RMK, Shu Uemura, Burberry, Chantecaille, Make Up For Ever, Le Metier de Beaute (but recently I am not really pleased with their new palettes)… It depends what result you are looking for, all these are appropriate for my eyelids. I still love and wear Urban Decay or Mac for example but they tend to look less flattering on my eyelids.
I could not live with only one brand I am afraid. I have planned a post on my favorite eyeshadows, same kind of post as my favorite lip liners, I will pick the ones I love the most amongst all the brands I know 🙂

Thank you for sharing your collection! I have long drooled over RBR products. I plan to have at least one RBR product in my collection, but I’m holding off the splurge until I’m more confident in my tastes. I’ve come a long way in determining what I like and don’t like in makeup, but I still consider myself a newbie. In the meantime, I enjoy wonderful posts like this.

You are welcome Boobooninja, RBR is a very tricky brand because there is no way to see them in person.
I had the same problem, it took me a while to know what I like and what was actually good for me and sometimes there is a world apart. I am still a newbie I learn every day, and everyday it gets more difficult because the ageing process causes mandatory changes in my makeup routine, RBR is gorgeous but also a delicate brand for ageing lids and I have to wear them with precaution but I have to say they are stunning.
Thanks for visiting 🙂

Sonia, do you have a link to that palette you found on eBay to house the RBR shadows? Thanks!

Thanks Sonia, you’re too quick! That’s what I thought too but I wasn’t sure since yours didn’t have the aluminium tins 🙂

These look gorgeous! I was wondering, I’ve heard some people say the potted versions are more pigmented/creamier than the refills, did you find that to be true at all with these? I can’t decide whether to buy the refills or the potted versions and just depot them all.
