Wayne Goss – The Luxury Eye Collection

by Sonia G.

On the 30th of July 2020, Wayne Goss launched his Luxury Eye Collection.
I cannot believe it’s finally here!!! We were all waiting for this moment with much anticipation and I am so excited and happy for Wayne!

Today I am thrilled to share with you my first impressions on the Luxury Imperial Topaz eyeshadow palette and the kohl pencils that just launched. I want this post to be up as quickly as possible so I will just go straight to the point. Please do not hesitate to ask me any questions!

IMPERIAL TOPAZ LUXURY EYE PALETTE

The eyeshadow case is black, piano style finish, feels heavy (131g) and has a large mirror (10cmx6cm), the closure has a solid “click”.

The pans are rectangular, 3.5cmx3cm, they don’t pop out. Each pan contains 2.7g of product approx. So this palette contains approx the same amount of product as 3 Charlotte Tilbury Luxury quads.

  • Shade 01: Light champagne with a satin finish
  • Shade 02: Soft bronze with a satin finish
  • Shade 03: Rich black with a matte finish
  • Shade 04: Copper rose with a satin finish
  • Shade 05: Warm brown with a matte finish
  • Shade 06: Sparkling champagne with a shimmer finish

Made in USA – Price $55 – Net Wt. 16.2g / 0.57 oz.

You can do the math vs other brands, but for the quality and amount of product that we get here, it’s a fantastic price. This is a color story for every day type of looks, subtle or bold smokey looks, if these are shades you gravitate towards, this is definitely a must have.

I also enjoy that the palette is not thick and that there is no wasted space, it is so much easier to carry in spite of the huge amount of product that it contains.

Imperial Topaz

It hasn’t even been 24 hours since I received it, I just used it 3 times, for 3 different looks: “post office trip”, “dinner date” (in my own garden…) and “free style” which was actually a test drive vs other similar brands, just having fun 🙂

The “post office” look I created was subtle, I used 5 of the shades though – the only shade I didn’t use was the number 4 Copper Rose.
While I was using this palette for the first time, I noticed that the results were impeccable. Whether I went for a very soft wash or a more bold look, that black shadow was blending and performing so well! When I came back from my 5 minute trip to the Post office, I wanted to play more and check that blending game again. I upgraded my look into a very dramatic and gorgeous smokey eye to go out for dinner, in my garden 🙂

Wayne says that he made sure these shadows worked well on people who are 40+, because if they do, they will work amazingly on anyone. I will be focusing my feedback here based on the experience I had with the shadows as a 40+++++++++.

Swatches

These swatches don’t do this palette justice, I tried to take the pics out in the sun this afternoon but the sun was so intense -hottest day of the year- and I couldn’t even see what I was doing… but we will still be able to talk about how they performed!

In the upcoming days I will post more swatches here and if you have any particular swatch request, do let me know.

1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6

The swatches below have been done with Wayne Goss brushes, I tried to pick the brush I would pair with that particular shadow for an application on the eyes. The shadows may not look pigmented at first swipe, but wait for it.

These shades work in a buildable way, I start with a soft wash and escalate to a more intense result, this is how I prefer to do specially now at my age. I often mention in my posts that I prefer to work with stronger brushes paired with shadows that allow for a more gradual application.

Shade 01: Light champagne with a satin finish

This is precisely the type of finish that I go for to highlight the inner corner of the eye or onto the mobile lid. This shade is so forgiving on ageing lids!

I was surprised as well by the longevity so it ticks all the boxes! This is now my go-to and the pan is big enough for a cheek brush to fit in…so if any of these shadows is the right shade for you for a blush, contour or highlight, give it a try.

WG vs Serge Lutens and Marc Jacobs

Some shimmer shadows are likely to emphasize wrinkles or give a tacky twist to an elegant look, this Wayne Goss shade doesn’t.

Shade 02: Soft bronze with a satin finish

I used this shade on the mobile lid, and on top of the black to give it more dimension. I tried a soft one-color type of look with the black as a base and this shade on top and I loved it, will definitely do that many more times again. I noticed it made the little green I have in my eyes pop really nicely.

I have used this shade for blush very very lightly and this is a gorgeous summery night time blush or topper (can get heavy quickly because of the shine), it looks quite similar in shade to the Westman Atelier Peau de Peche tinted highlight that I love. I am NW20-25.

Shade 03: Rich black with a matte finish

It reminded me of Serge Lutens with regards to the blending, and Serge Lutens shadows are probably the most expensive eyeshadows I own.

This black shadow is mesmerizing in the way it blends or plays with other shadows. I love it when I am able to work a shadow with finesse, to drive it where and how I want it, I don’t want an overpowering black shadow that I cannot control and that bleeds all over the place. I am delighted to see how disciplined and effortless this shade is.

I have only used this shadow a few times yet the fading and longevity completely took me by surprise. I had a blepharoplasty (lid skin removed), so the dark shadows, even with a great base underneath, tend to gather in the scars after a few hours. I did not notice this issue with these shadows at all. I have to try again because the conditions (weather, etc) also have a direct impact on how the shadows stick to the lids, maybe it was just a good day but seriously, that was fantastic to see.

I am not commenting much on the swatches since it’s 5 in the morning and I will post better swatches in the future, but here you can clearly see the definition and the way the pigment glides, it speaks for itself.

Shade 04: Copper rose with a satin finish

I cannot wear warm shadows -although this copper rose is more subtle and wearable than I had anticipated. It builds very softly and blends so nicely that I seriously cannot wait for a cool toned palette, please Wayne, just tell us there is a cool toned palette on the way!!!! (or more!).

Shade 05: Warm brown with a matte finish

The more you build this shadow, the more the warmth stands out. As I use only cool or neutral shadows, this is a shade I will use with care, but I will pair it with the black for example.

I would love the same quality in a cool toned brown!!!!

Shade 06: Sparkling champagne with a shimmer finish

The best way to apply this shadow is with the fingertips, I love this “adult” sparkly shimmer, applied with precision and in small quantities, I do use it daily not only for bold looks.

I used it with the more subtle look lightly in the center of the mobile lid and with the bold look in a more heavy way and it did not bother my eyes (which is a big surprise since many sparkly shimmers do). I think that as long as you use it carefully, it works on everyone.

It is more similar to the TF shimmers in the Cream and Powder pots, more fine and more grip vs the Natasha Denona.

ESSENTIAL EYE KOHLS

There are 3 kohls in the collection so far, they are made in Czech Republic – Price $14 each, Net Wt. 1.14 g / 0.04 oz.

  • Obsidian: “Rich black with a matte finish”
  • Precious Opal: “Medium bronze with a satin finish”
  • Rich Hazel: “Dark brown with a matte finish”

Obsidian (black) and Rich Hazel (brown) are matte, Precious Opal is a bronze with a satin finish and I can see tiny micro shimmer particles.

They feel like cream kohls but they smudge with the ease of a powder, I don’t know how to explain but I will insert more swatches and short clips in the near future. The application is super easy, they smudge with zero clumps, super smooth and no patchiness at all.
I used them as a base and also smudge them along the lashline, no issues whatsoever. These kohls are gems and I absolutely adore them, I am blown away seriously. Then if I want something waterproof, I will go with a waterproof but on a daily basis, this is what I would reach for.

I am very pleasantly surprised with their longevity – even though these are not waterproof they lasted and when they faded, it was in a sexy and even manner, with no blank areas or a grained texture. I am so thrilled and I wish we will see even more shades coming soon! Brightening pencils in this formula would be stunning.

I tried the Rich Hazel on the waterline and it did not cause any issues, I am extremely sensitive and if I use a pencil in the waterline, I’ll know I did the day after… I am not an expert on ingredients but I will copy the ingredients at the bottom of this post in case you are interested.

BOTTOM LINE

The eyeshadow palette works really well on my ageing lids, the blending is consistent and controllable.
I think he was talking about sophistication and on myself it looks both elegant and sultry. Two of the shades are too warm for me to fully enjoy so I hope that there is a cool toned palette also on the way!!! I definitely encourage you to try them, regardless of your skills or age.

These products were sent to me so that I could share my thoughts with you, thank you Beautylish and Wayne, and congratulations to Wayne for launching such a wonderful collection!

It is available now on Beautylish!
