Rouge Bunny Rouge – Long-lasting matte eyeshadows – When Birds are Singing

by Sonia G.

Rouge Bunny Rouge delivers excellent eyeshadow quality. If you are eager to find the best quality matte eyeshadows, you cannot go wrong with Rouge Bunny Rouge and I totally recommend you splurge on this brand.

I don’t think it’s easy to create a matte finish that is nicely pigmented without being chalky, muddy or streaky. These matte eyeshadows from RBR have all the qualities you are looking for in a matte formula, plus, they are long-lasting and easy to blend on their own or together with other textures.

The only reason why I don’t use them more often today is because you can not buy them in refills and put them in your palettes, but, this is finally changing… they have just released new eyeshadows in a refill format : “Nest of Plenty“, with some new shades and some other picked from their current range. I have ordered them and will be swatching and reviewing them for you during this next weekend.

At the bottom of this post, I will also add some swatches of the non-matte RBR eyeshadows I own today so that you can have an idea of the beautiful shades they have in their current collection.

On to the RBR matte collection … only 6 shades are available. Their RBR description is spot on :

  • Papyrus Canary : Semi-opaque palest creamy beige
  • Chestnut-napped Apalis : Semi-opaque chestnut puree with a hint of cocoa dust
  • Grey go-away Lourie : Semi-opaque smokey slate grey
  • Blackpepper Jay : Semi-opaque smokey black brown
  • Bashful Flamingo : Semi-opaque pale powder pink looking ultra natural and fresh on the eye
  • Sweet Dust Seriema : Semi-opaque cool dusty mauve taupe

RBR description :

Discover a new powder eye shadow with an astonishing lightweight, creamy touch and unprecedented adherence. This formula creates pure dynamic iridescence while it maintains second skin effect. It has extended 8-hour wear that will stay perfect and look freshly applied all day. Orange-derived Flavonoid improves blood microcirculation, enhances luminosity and serves as a free radicals scavenger.

RBR application recommendations :

According to the intensity of colour you want, there are 3 ways of applying RBR’s eye shadows:
1. Apply dry for 8 hours of gorgeousness.
2. Apply with a damp brush to extend the wear even further and intensify the shade.
3. Mix with RBR’s Aqua Primer PRELUDE IN THE CLOUDS for the most intense, long-wearing colour that mousturises and treats all day (and night) long.
You can also use as a liquid eyeliner by using an eyeliner brush damp, either alone, or over eye pencil for added impact.

Ingredients :

TALC, ALUMINUM STARCH OCTENYLSUCCINATE, ZEA MAYS STARCH, DIMETHICONE, MICA, ISONONYL ISONONANOATE, CETEARYL ETHYLHEXANOATE, ZEOLITE, ZINC STEARATE, C26-28 ALKYL DIMETHICONE, SORBIC ACID, METHYLPARABEN, PCA DIMETHICONE, NYLON-12, PROPYLPARABEN, DIMETHICONOL, TETRASODIUM EDTA, BUTYLPARABEN, TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE, OCTYLDODECANOL, OCTYLDODECYL STEAROYL STEARATE, BHT. (+/-): CI 77891, CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499, CI 77007, CI 75470, CI 77742, CI 77510, CI 77288, CI 77289, CI 19140, CI 42090, CI77266

The amount you get is 2.4g (0.084oz) for 22 Gbp. For reference a Mac eyeshadow is 1.5g (0.05oz). Basically, for the same quantity of shadow, you are paying 5 Usd more than a Mac potted eyeshadow and honestly, it is worth it.

In the picture below, you can see white labels on side of the lids, with the name of each eyeshadow, this is because I store them vertically and I like to see the name immediately without having to read the back, I added these labels myself.
The names RBR chose for the shadows are beautiful and creative but not always easy to identify…

The packaging is nice and simple, easy to carry and store, but I would rather prefer if they also had a refill format for each shadow.  All the eyeshadows, even the duo ones, have the same drawing on the lid.

The back of the matte eyeshadows :

Papyrus Canary

The lightest shade, it was surprisingly difficult to find dupes for these RBR matte eyeshadows, I have so many brands and so many colors but it was really difficult to find exact dupes for them.

The closest I found are the Nars and Bare Minerals below.

Chestnut-Napped Apalis

Looks easy to dupe.. but how wrong I was, I thought I made a mistake ordering it and that I had many dupes… actually … I have none.
We all need this shade.

Grey Go-Away Lourie

This grey is just grey, all the other greys I have in my collection lean towards blue or brown but this one is just the most perfect “only grey” shade.

I have swatched some of them together for you, but nothing looks similar to this RBR.

Blackpepper Jay

My absolute favorite matte shade. It’s the most perfect black brown shade you could ever desire, scarily pigmented, silky like no other and so flattering that you will be amazed of the results, believe me, you need this.
If you can order only one, get Blackpepper Jay. I love this look done by RBR with matte eyeshadows,  you can recreate this look without any difficulty and it will last all day (well, it’s more a look for the night, so it will last all night…).

I love both Chanel Prelude, the darkest shade of the Prelude, and this RBR, I could not find any other shade close enough.

Bashful Flamingo

You may not be necessarily tempted by this kind of neutral color, but you should. I often wear a beige-pinky base like the pale pink in Chantecaille Olivia’s palette because it has some more shine and it’s very flattering, but if you are looking for a matte light pink (I can see peachy undertones..) you should stick to RBR.

Sweet Dust Seriema

A stunning shade, when I saw this one for the first time I froze…  I was waiting for a shade like this for a long time ! I have a few in my collection that are close in color but the quality of this RBR is beyond imagination.

I have tried to find a dupe for it but I just could not…  I swatch some other well known shadows close to it so that you can have an idea.

The texture of the RBR matte eyeshadows is by far the best of all, the silkiest and more blendable of them all, there is no questioning that.

The rest of the current non-matte range

I am also swatching the other RBR I own today, if it’s the first time you hear about Rouge Bunny Rouge, it will give you an idea of what amazing shades they have.

A Major – fis Minor

C Major – a Minor

Bottom line

Greatest eyeshadow quality and actually, extremely long-lasting, I recommend you to try them as soon as possible.

I found you blog by googling swatches of RBR matte eyeshadows.
*sigh* I am in heaven. Your blog is wonderful! I think I’m going to spend many hours going through your archives. Many *happy* hours. 🙂
I did a few quick searches on your blog but I wasn’t able to find out your skin tone. I’m interested because I’d like to gauge how these RBR eyeshadows might look on me. Do you know what you might be… say, in MAC terms?

Hi 🙂
Thank you ! I am so happy you find it nice ! 🙂
My skin tone in Mac is NW20 in winter and NW25 in summer (in the Mineralize SPF15 foundation, the round cream compact and I have gone through a few of them already).
If you create a profile in the Zuneta website, with your skin tone, etc, the site automatically suggest shades that would suit you when you are browsing the RBR eye shadows.
But, for example for Rouge Bunny Rouge, I use products that are not exactly meant for my skin tone but that are also really gorgeous (lip liners, eyeshadows or blushes).
I think every one should own Blackpepper Jay to start with… to me, the best one of the mattes.
Thanks again and I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do ! <3

Hi Sonia 🙂
I keep looking at Chestnut-Napped Apalis and wondering if it’s similar to Burberry “Almond”… Do you think I “need” both?

I just found your Burberry post that has them swatched side-by-side. So thank you! 😀

I found this blog entry two years on and it’s still the best overview of the RBR shadows around. Comprehensive, well researched, informative and entertaining.
Alas, also tempting…

Hey Hi Sylvia!
So… have you heard the birds sing ? did you resist or are you going to get some ? Still happy with mine, when it comes to metallic finish, although I am not fan of metallics there are no better than these RBR!
For the matte still going well, I think the overall quality of the matte market is decreasing so the RBR are getting a higher rank 😛
