My Brush-room Project

by Sonia G.

As mentioned in this post, this is my very own project for a room dedicated to my office, make-up, brushes, studio photo, vanity and when I’ll have friends over it has to host a bed. I warn you, this room is old and tiny and my budget is tiny too but after checking many Libby Langdon videos or other similar videos on Youtube, it’s amazing what you can do easily without breaking the bank!

So, we bought a house 2 years ago, actually it’s a very old chalet, it means that it requires a huge lot of renovation work…  from scratch and in every single room.

I love to see projects before and after, always very curious about the results and ideas, amazing what can be done with a bit of effort and a lot of imagination and this is exactly what I will be doing here! Then if I don’t like it, I change it but I am the one who will be spending here most of my free time so the most important thing is that it’s efficient,  time saving and that I love it!

There has been a lot of work already since we started 2 years ago and it will carry on for a long while but it’s ok, we’ll get there.

The house layout

This chalet was originally in 3 parts with separate entrances, the first step was to link the 3 parts and make it only 1 house.

Before Today Later
Basement Laundry room, storage Laundry room, storage Laundry room, sauna + steam
Ground floor Kitchen, living room, bathroom, room Kitchen, living room, bathroom, room, veranda Stays the same, the bathroom will be destroyed and rebuilt from scratch at the end of 2014 or when time/budget permits
1st floor Kitchen, living room, bathroom, room1 (office, clothes, books), room2 (main room), balcony stairs, living room, bathroom, room1 (office, clothes, books… and cat when we are away), room2 (main room), terrace stairs, bathroom, room1, room2, room3 (ex-living room will be our main room and bf’s office since it has a separate corner), terrace

The bathroom on the first floor has been destroyed to leave space for the stairs to go to the ground floor and the 1st floor kitchen is becoming right at this precise moment a bathroom!
The kitchen on the ground floor has completely been destroyed and refurnished but it’s not 100% done, just about 80%.
The 1st floor balcony has become a terrace extended to fit the whole roof of the veranda.
All the house windows have been replaced, 2 remaining but they will also be done.
The extent of the renovation works is quite big… 🙁  We couldn’t start the “brush-room” until we had one kitchen in place and some other things done but it’s about time NOW…

The “brush-room” layout

The old walls where like those of a Swiss Chalet : wood panels. I have started to remove those. 3 walls out of 4 had them all over, looked like that (this was a temporary layout hence the lights are not in place) :

The only two things that will stay after the works in this pic is the vanity Besta Burs from Ikea, and the old piano chair that I will upcycle, (change the feet and cover the black leather).

There are two windows in this room:  one is facing the veranda and has to be changed (the new one has been ordered).

This is the little veranda facing my brush-room and the veranda has all windows around it:

The veranda is an extension to the ground floor and it’s new, since that old window in the brush-room is not directly facing the outside anymore, we had to add a second window on the only outside wall.

Behind the reddish “curtains” that I stippled there temporarily there are… cables, tubes, horrible things… Not sure I even want to show … but here it is in small pic :

The wood and old isolation are now gone :

photo 1(10)

We will proceed to the cleaning of the walls and pre-preparation today and tomorrow so that we can put this week the new structure for the plaster boards and mount them.

What will change

The roof, floor and the walls: everything. The old veranda window will also be replaced by a new one.

The glass desk will change as glass was not a good idea… in winter it’s too cold and when my arms touch it it’s not comfortable at all. If you are considering a glass desk, think about that … 🙂

The Ikea Alex drawers that I have today will change, I will replace them by Ikea kitchen units with narrow drawers, more solid and better built to prevent dust to enter. Each drawer unit is 80cm wide 60cm deep. The handles I will probably order them on Ebay (or whereever I find them) so that they are a bit more bold and beautiful that the ones from Ikea… but I don’t want to order them until I tried the room paint and see what color combination works best, then I will order the handles accordingly.

The 2 computer screens will be hanging on the wall instead of lying on the desk, that will allow me a less deep desk and they will be aligned with the Ikea kitchen units. I will just put a white lacquered top on the 2 narrower kitchen units. Then the other drawers units on the right will have a transparent cover so that you could see nice brushes or make-up items (I was thinking of a glass door that I could lift open).

The white vanity will remain the same for now, today it looks like this :

I have no walls so… that’s pretty awful, I just temporarily placed a curtain to protect me from the dust but as you see I cannot wait any longer and the works need done … they should have started before but I could not.

On the other side of the desk I have the lights for the pictures and I was using the old kitchen units that we removed on the 1st floor to “organize” my make-up here but these are going too.

The 2 big black lights will be hanging on the wall instead of lying on the stands, that will save some space.

The Ikea Malm will go.

The main idea is that no furniture (or very little) will be on the floor, most of it will be hanging on the walls and will be as narrow as possible. I will have to transfer all my make-up to a different setting.

Yesterday I have been removing the items and placing them in protected boxes :

All the contents from these two kitchen units are now away and awaiting…

The brushes will move from here :

and here :

To the new long drawers from Ikea that I showed you before.

I will also install thin glass shelves on the walls to showcase the most beautiful brushes and kabukis, just like in a museum…. 😛

I am a bit crazy about organization, my drawers look like this today :

I feel the need to label everything when I can and see the label when I open the drawer…

I also would like to install Ikea Ribba picture shelves like this  :

You can do many things with them, store beauty books to decorate, brushes, or compacts like I did :

I think it can be useful and nice to look at… not sure about the weight though.. instead of 3 screws I may need 20 to hold the weight… 😀 but you know, it was just an idea…

Ideas and prerequisites…

I need to be able to quickly install a portable bed(s) so not much furniture lying around, we talked about this.

I would like to install shelves like this with lights in between the top of the shelves and the roof. The shelves would be 2 or 3 on each wall depending on how many I can line up…

The mirror.. it’s a good question. I think I am not the only one who finds the mirrors are always too far away…

I have at least two options that I consider…

Either install a mirror like the ones that you put on the bathroom but it’s not that sexy…

and if you take a nice looking one, it’s very expensive. The nice thing about it is that behind the mirror you have storage room and that the mirror is much closer to you. You could install a large fake frame to make it a bit more unique but still, looks very bathroomy to me.

There are others that have some installations behind so that you can put them a bit away from the wall and closer to you:

The other solution is to attach a wooden base on this :

and then attach a mirror on the wood and when you need to mirror to be close you just have to move the base and bring it towards you… I already bought that Uppleva from Ikea for the computer screens so who knows, maybe it’s a good idea for the mirror but it cannot be a very heavy mirror… we’ll see, can be dangerous…

I am loving this mirror actually:

But depending on what I need, it may not work at all…

Underneath the vanity, I want to attach this :

This white thing is a kitchen organizer from Ikea that has a thing at the back to hook it on a bar.

I have a lot of hair stylers and I use them all… but in a drawer they take a lot of space so here would be the best place for them. I will reuse part of the things that we had in our old kitchen anyway but I may need to add a deco touch to them.

I also bought a second chair like this that I will install in the brush-room to read or relax…  Then I can take the other one from the living room and have a comfy chat with my friends surrounded by brushes 🙂

Ideas for the paint

The paint will be very bold. Actually really bold. I fell in love with several colors from this shop, the Kenya, Cream, Navy and Mulberry. They are actually darker than in the pic here, here they appear washed out.

The bronze is absolutely stunning, has a metallic finish that makes me go crazy, seriously I am loving it and needing it…

In reality it looks much warmer than in the first swatch pic above, it’s probably going to be too much for a full wall but part of the wall or just prints on top of a brownish/taupe wall it will look  amazing. It’s also a paint you can use on top of other paints, frames, etc and that gives me many ideas.. I was thinking of painting this for example to restore it and give a more magical touch to the room:

So.. maybe Mulberry for the roof, maybe Navy (some of these paints have a gel finish), one accent wall in dark taupe or brown and the others a lighter tone. I will bring testers home and have fun checking…

I bought these two cushions some time ago because I love abstract or geometric patterns (better than flowers, really not a fan of girly deco unless it’s Japanese and abstract …), these are taupe and white and I thought they would look nice in my imaginary room… together with a velours deco…

For example I prefer this style rather than pink or flowers :

For the curtains I wanted to put this kind of panels :

BUT instead of plain panels I wanted to put calligraphy painted scrolls (that you can find on Ebay and that are signed or not by artists, depending on how much you can pay…).

My bf told me : “don’t forget the sun hits the window so your scrolls may be damaged“. Yep, my bf is the brain of the operation, I hadn’t thought of that. I will either use old scrolls (I can even paint them myself LOL) or just stick them or we’ll see…

If you wander what scrolls are:

For the roof, I don’t have much choice … it’s low, I can touch it with my fingertips so there is not much I can do about it but since I won’t have much space in the walls for pictures or patterns, I wanted to put 4 frames like this against the roof in the center :

Inside I don’t know, maybe patterns or pictures or lights depending on the final look…

If you search for “fake roof lights” you can see amazing ideas for interior roofs, I am very inspired and intend to do something nice about it, despite being so low in this room. Lights can help a lot…

I have other things that are lying around and that I want to use to create deco things or frames, like these Rock and Republic empty compacts for example:

For the floor I would like something earthy and glossy… I took many pics of patterns and stone-looking floors but until the paint is done I cannot decide…

I will update this as I go when progress has been made… So, without any further due… LET’S ROCK THIS ROOM 🙂

FIRST UPDATE – 09 September 2014

It was a great day, started by the postman bringing me ALL of the new Suqqu palettes that I ordered on the 5th of August… the 3 trios and the combined quad… rââââ For the first time in my life I haven’t swatch them yet because I want to try to take a pic tomorrow before I use them… will I be able to resist… ??? hmmmmmm

I am still waiting for a few palettes (Addiction and Ipsa) and other bits and pieces 😀  so it’s an exciting parcel-week!

Today…. I managed to empty the room completely (geez how did I manage to put so much stuff in there!!!) our living room is a now an official huge mess, we are going to loose the cat in there somewhere…. or he is going to have a brain crash because he plays with every single little thing he finds on the floor so by the end of the week he will be totally burned-out!

Not only my room contents have all been moved into the living room but the isolation, wood and plaster boards are now also there…

We bought our materials in Hornbach, it’s THE do-it-yourself, they have everything and they are so professional and informed that they need a mention, even though it’s a beauty blog 😀

We paid more than 1000 usd for the basic material… ouch… not even the paint or the deco… and that shop is the cheapest one around. We rented their truck -a bargain- 25usd per hour, I don’t know how you can beat that though!

I was laughing at the truck because it’s written “ta sueur” that I am pointing at there, it means “YOUR OWN SWEAT” … at that precise moment I was not only reaaaaally disgusting sweaty, but covered with plaster 😀 you can’t see it as the phone pic is bad but I was having a lot of fun !

Anyway… we have the material to work with tomorrow, which is great because the calculations weren’t easy, I know it’s only ONE room, but the walls are all different, each one pointing to a different temperature and I am always very cold so I need quite a lot of isolation in there 😀 Winters are tough here! we have enough 6 months per year!

Tomorrow I will remove the old roof and sanitize the walls, not a lot of fun but hey, it’s happening !!!!! *if you could see me now…. jumping and typing guuuurrrrllss*

Oh about the new furry member : it’s the little big kitten… now keeping company to our adorable but old border collie…  they love each other so so much it’s unbelievable, here some pics just for the name of love… 🙂

tessandthecat3UPDATE 10th September 2014

“Keep calm and destroy”

So… my day was just about trying not to loose my mind with things that “looked easy” but weren’t…  bottom line: always look at the hidden side of the “easy task”.  Removing solid wood was mastered with strength and liberation. Removing white polystyrene was a nightmare, all the roof was covered with it, partially glued… a huge mess… anyway, today, all the remaining unhealthy things are out.

I cleaned the walls with a special product to sanitize and remove spores/humidity etc, 3 times!!! Then I added a coat of humidity protector all over just to prevent any damage in the future.

Smells clean now but the people who built this room in the past were animals beasts, I am sorry to be so rude but seriously there are big holes and huge defaults that we have to repair tomorrow.  I will spend a lot of time in here and it has to be a healthy, warm and solid place. At the end we spent a lot of money trying to save a house but I wonder if we should have bought something else somewhere else for the same price, we would probably have made it 🙁 anyway… I am not afraid of working I just want to get it over with and stop discovering new issues!!!

After many hours cleaning, brushing, shouting, dancing, I was signaling to my bf I was STILL ALIVE ..  looking exhausted but still kicking..

After so much work I thought I deserved one of my fav deserts even though  I shouldn’t! I cannot eat lactose, gluten, eggs, etc.. (this is not allergy but intolerance..) but I can make one or two little exceptions sometimes …  I LOVE cheesecake ice cream !!! 😀 😀 😀

As soon as I started to have some rest our little “Shadow” came to see me…  Can you spot the swatches on my hand ??? this how you recognize a hardcore beauty-addict!!! One break=one swatch 😀 I received the new Addiction Black palette and spent a little while playing around with it 😉

hey fatty!! gimme some cheesecake 😀

To be continued… This room may take some time but I’ll get there for sure !!

UPDATE 11th September 2014

Starting the structure!

I feel like I learned a lot today, drilling, sawing, or even using 3 different products to fill unwanted wall holes, not one but three products!!!…every hole has its product in men’s land 😀 No more guilty feelings about using 30 different brushes for foundation! 😀

One product was really fun to use, you mix water and powder and it becomes solid like a cement IN 3 MINUTES! When you reach the 3 minutes if you are not done applying, it’s too late. I was trying to calculate the exact quantities when my bf asked “What are you doing ?”  DUUUHH I am calculating the quantities!! well… he said “no need to calculate you feel when it’s ready, you add water when you need, you add product when you need…” Yeah right, and when I feel like it’s ready it’s already too late! A cake mixture does not go solid in a blink so it’s NOT like baking!! It was like magic fast, super fun and not only I enjoyed it but I did a great job!

Some things are definitely easier than others and I don’t mind hard work but sawing is not something I like…  seriously hate it. Electric sawing even more.

Still far from ready but I am so impatient that I’ll use anything to get it done ASAP!

UPDATE 12th September 2014

More drilling, sawing, etc… Today I learned to do so many things that I feel quite proud of myself, even the sawing is better now, the secret is to use strength and not be scared about it or it looses precision.

While my bf was showing me how to place the structure holes and drill with the bigger drill on the cement walls, I secretly took a pic of him while he was teaching 😀

structure1There are precise reasons why the structure is like that (it’s not finished and it’s not perfect because it’s my very first one…) On the top of it, there is going to be a lot of weight so I am reinforcing it. You’ll see later on why 🙂

wallAnyway, not that this is at all interesting in a beauty blog but what will be on top of this wall is definitely going to be amazing!

I started the day wearing 2 t-shirts and 2 fleece jackets -I was really cold and when I am cold I become “wonder-onion”, it’s the only way to survive in this village. By the end of that structure, I was only wearing 1 t-shirt and sweating like a beast…

But these two little guys were happily resting and playing 😀

UPDATE 21st September 2014

The less interesting part of this project is still ongoing: the walls and the roof!

The architect wanted me to put the heater under the main window -which is clever I admit – but I didn’t know that, so I had made all the plans with the heater under the OTHER window… Since these are triple glass windows I convinced him and it’s still ok to move it to the side of the room… anyway, things that I haven’t considered as I did not know 🙂

The plugs have to be integrated in the wall the best way possible, near the vanity, the office, behind the mirror (that I still haven’t chosen), and I will have a lot of lights between the shelves and the roof so that is quite a lot of work and electricity is something I just don’t dare to touch so my bf takes care … This weekend we worked a lot, the architect and the electrician have to come to check things out but we are progressing nicely.

Then I get distracted and start play with a drill and polishing paper 😀 and do this:

You definitely get some additional “powers” when you know how to operate the construction tools and I intend to use my “new powers” in a very creative way 😀

By the way, have you ever seen a cat’s paw in detail ? Sooooo cute …

raglo 8 September, 2014 - 4:35 pm

I would SO decorate for you in exchange for room and board 😀

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 8 September, 2014 - 7:50 pm

You have a natural talent for that, I had to spend hours on Youtube watching videos 😀

Raglo 8 September, 2014 - 8:46 pm

LOL! Youtube is awesome :). I learned how to build websites in Dreamweaver and use Adobe Flash completely from weeks and weeks of tutorials! It certainly didn’t come easily or naturally (not the visual, but the technical part), but I was determined ;). And I just taught myself vector graphics in Illustrator over the weekend to do more digital sketching (I prefer to illustrate my hand but it’s an industry standard so I decided it was time to stop protesting it). That was easy, I don’t know why I’d put it off for so long.

You’ll do awesome! Can’t wait for the reveal whenever it’s done. It’ll be like “Extreme makeover home edition” except it’ll be “Swiss chalet brush edition” :D!

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 9 September, 2014 - 9:38 pm

waw! very impressed!! amazing how much you can learn if you are determined! 🙂 takes time though but it works!!
yeah… a swiss chalet brush museum 😀 😀 hahahaha

Raglo 11 September, 2014 - 5:08 pm

Yes, where do I apply for a membership card to get reduced admission rates to the museum :D??

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 11 September, 2014 - 9:18 pm

😀 😀 😀 you are a member already !

Raglo 11 September, 2014 - 10:15 pm

LOL I just imagined this scenario – having never met, I, or any one of us, show up at the Chalet, you’re not home, Richard answers the door and I go: “Yes I’m here for the brush museum, I’m a member. Will there be a guided tour at the next full hour?” and get a serious wtf look in return :D.

BTW such a cute kitty! They and the doggy look like siblings, so sweet! I have a black and white cat too 🙂

brushjunkie 8 September, 2014 - 5:04 pm

I am in heaven just looking thru all your pics and ideas Sonia! I am actually giddy for you lol. Love the scrolls as panels. Adds a definite Japanese feel which speaks to the history of these brushes.

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 8 September, 2014 - 7:49 pm

Thank you Bea LOOOL
my bf is also excited, everytime I tell him “I have an idea!!” he goes hide 😀
Can’t wait for the scrolls since I love calligraphy so so much!! so next year… Japan ??

Bonnie 9 September, 2014 - 12:33 am

I also love the panels and I think you should keep the ideas coming!!!! Your ideas are what got all of us together right now <3 the colour scheme is divine!

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 9 September, 2014 - 9:24 pm

🙂 my bf says the colors are too crazey bahahaha but … I need samples of all the ones I love… they are doing a “paper” that you stick to the wall before the paint and it gives a 3d effect… I am loving it https://www.hornbach.ch/cms/fr/ch/aktuelles/projektschau/live_im_markt_wandgestaltung.html we’ll see… maybe it will make the room too small!! 😀 😀 😀

argiro 8 September, 2014 - 6:23 pm

i am more than excited about this project…….and do not worry everything is going to all right.last winter was the worst of my life and my love for brushes help me a lot.

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 8 September, 2014 - 7:47 pm

Hi Argiro,
thank you! it’s fun to know that someone else is excited about it 🙂 can’t wait to share this experience 🙂
A passion is very helpful in tough moments, it helped me a lot too! <3

Galliesallie 8 September, 2014 - 7:13 pm

If I lived near you I would buy your old kitchen cabinet. I love it! Thank you for sharing such detailed plans for the Brush Room, looking forward to updates.

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 8 September, 2014 - 7:46 pm

where do you live ? 🙂

Kay 8 September, 2014 - 7:56 pm

Oh, so exciting to see your new house in progress — it’s very sophisticated and elegant! Two thoughts as I read: 1) for mirrors — I have a very large bathroom cabinet with sliding glass mirrors set in so that it is flush with the wall, only 6″ deep and occupies the double wall space between rooms. I love it as it as the shallow space allows me to store a huge amount of stuff without sacrificing room space. 2) The Japanese scroll idea is fantabulous and I think you should go for it!

I’m sad to hear about your recent issues — please take care and get enough rest. It’s tempting to go, go, go but health is number one. 🙂

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 9 September, 2014 - 9:51 pm

Saw your pics Karen, thank you !!! I have to keep calm and do one thing at a time LOOOL bf is afraid of me LOOOL
that gives me more ideas 😉
When you travel inside Japan you are inspired with everything you see, it’s fantastic! The issue is I have two main ideas quite different and I am struggling to decide which way to go so I’ll see as it goes on 🙂
Rest is my priority for now, it has to be! but I’ll be ok, lesson learned 🙂

Lyanna Stark 8 September, 2014 - 8:40 pm

What a blogging talent you are! I thought I was just obsessed with your brushes, but you’re making even your reno seem awesome. Good luck, and thanks for journaling!

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 9 September, 2014 - 9:39 pm

Thank you Lyanna, I put passion in everything I do (Between us two, a bit too much passion so my bf says) but we need to have fun in this life, don’t we ??
And I am not doing the reno droopy style, more like beep beep style… 😉

Hue Rocks 8 September, 2014 - 9:13 pm

You have a very exiting project going on there! Someday I’d like to have my own makeup area, a small private room like this would be perfect. When reading your post and reached the mirror part I remembered the way I want mine to be someday. I saw it on Tarababyz’s video about her room tour: she has a mirror on the wall with a small shelf to place the camera or makeup products. She mentioned that she applies makeup on while standing there because of back problems, and I completely understand that: when you have a mirror on a table or a vanity far away from your face you tend to bend forward to see things clearly so you end up with your back and neck messed. And this also goes well with your philosophy of “few furniture on the floor”, so I thought I would tell you in case you are interested XD

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 9 September, 2014 - 9:35 pm

Hi Hue!
I know very well Tara and her make-up room, thank you for suggesting because discovering Tara is important if you love make-up and organization 🙂
I did a similar thing for 2 years, with the Malm Ikea dresser, you open the top drawer by lifting it and you have to stand, my bf installed lights behind that I can move close to my face when needed.
Now I use the vanity because I have space and I prefer to sit but I could have carried on like I did before if I had no choice, it was actually really nice and useful to be able to point the lights exactly where I wanted. The only issue is the light not always being equal in each side, sometimes my right eye did not 100% match the left one 😀 I had to go check at work if I looked “even” lol
thank you again 🙂 really appreciate your suggestion <3

M i d n i t e D e s i r e 8 September, 2014 - 9:16 pm

Yaaaaay!!! So excited you’re back to blogland 🙂 and i’m SO looking forward to your update just can’t wait to hear more! anyway, your storage ideas are so great, i always like looking at other people’s storage, idk but i think i’m gonna invest in something better so i’m def open and looking for any *storage tips*

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 9 September, 2014 - 9:29 pm

I was depressed … feels great to be back!!! Have missed you so so so much!!! <3

212kiki 8 September, 2014 - 11:55 pm

Uhhhhhh excited !!!!! Finally the first step is done doesn’t that sounds weird after such a long time 😛

Ur ideas are very nice !!
To the mirror I wouldn’t use the bathroom thingy I would chose a normal mirror with the tv like construction attached to the wall !
The colors are very nice I love them and the bronze here and there as a effect would be nice uhhhh it took a long time till I was able to decide the colors for my appartment and i’m glad that I decided to go for the dark jade green in the end it looks so nice with just the rest white 😉

And Hun to be honest that chair is to sit on it while u have fun with brushes and having brushgasms !!

I need to install a hidden camera to look Sonia in action 😀 hmmm maybe ur BF can help me with that need his addy !!

Can’t wait to see the result ^^

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 9 September, 2014 - 9:28 pm

It has been a while since I said I would start but that never happened 🙁 my bf couldn’t help and on my own it’s impossible…
Dark Jade is gorgeous, I have been told that the trend is petrol with taupe with dark ceilings… hmmm I am voting for a dark ceiling but unfortunately it’s too low to do that 🙁
oh my… a hidden camera while (I can’t even say it…) 😀 😀 😀 scary!!!
he is capable of anything to have a laugh so dont you give him ideas !!!

Bonnie 9 September, 2014 - 12:35 am

I totally understand about the mirror being too far issue! I’m extremely short-sighted so I need to lean right in and poke myself in the eye with long brush handles :p

Your organisation of the drawers really makes me want to go play! When everything is just on show……your makeup collection, woman!

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 9 September, 2014 - 9:20 pm

lol Bonnie, we need to find a solution for this mirror issue 🙂
come and play sweetie !!!

Ann C. 9 September, 2014 - 1:22 am

First, praying for your health. I know its not life threatening but I guess its like asthma or allergies that needs continous medication? Rest well my friend.
Second, Im so excited!!!!!!!! Just readinh about this post and looking at your ideas… They are beautiful ideas! It makes me want a room make over myself! But no budget for now, so I will just have to wait and watch yours.
Good luck Sonia & hope everything will go according to plan. 🙂

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 9 September, 2014 - 9:19 pm

Thank you Ann, I really appreciate your support and love, really deeply… makes me strong and gives me a lot of courage ! <3
In my case it's "from scratch" work so more expensive than it would usually be but when I watch youtube videos, it's amazing what you can do with so little!!!
I'll keep you posted sweetheart 🙂 much love to you!

Belinha 9 September, 2014 - 2:28 am

So amazing!!! This is the most beautiful project

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 9 September, 2014 - 9:16 pm

Thank you Belinha 🙂

fenztastic 10 September, 2014 - 5:07 am

Sonia the Superwoman! What an exciting project! As someone who’s never satisfied with how I store my beauty products, I’ll be following you in the journey (read: living vicariously through you :)). For some reason, I thought you were living in the states, lol.

May you be happy and healthy everyday, pretty lady! <3

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 11 September, 2014 - 7:49 pm

you and I would make a wonderful couple !!! hahaha you are never satisfied and I change organization all the time because I never feel happy about it! 😉
Nope, I am living in a tiny little country away from the states…
May you please oh please stay around and I’ll be happy forever 😀

Carlyn 10 September, 2014 - 6:41 am

It’s so sweet that your pets love each other so much already, those pictures are too cute.

I’m so impressed by your renovations and TWO kitchens? I will die and go to heaven for that. I spend most of my time in the kitchen, so I would love that. I’m so excited to see the finished project and am really curious which brushes will make it to the museum.

How about this mirror?
I’ve been wanting this, but we sold our last house and bought our new one less than a year ago and then when I was ready to buy it, it got pushed to the side with all the brushes I’ve bought recently. Maybe for my birthday in a couple of months. It’s awesome. If they don’t ship internationally, maybe your Richard can build you one?

Take good care of yourself. I’m sorry that your health is not optimal at the moment, but eating right, relieving stress and getting enough rest and exercise can go a long way towards keeping you as healthy as possible. Praying for you, dear Sonia.

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 11 September, 2014 - 4:19 pm

nono, not anymore two kitchens, we moved everything into one! phew!! a big one is better than two right ? or you want one just for yourself ?? LOOL
yes that mirror is very nice, I had an idea last night LOOOOL really funny I have too many and then I forget part of them 😀 we’ll see! in that case we can build one 😀
they have those lights in a shopping close to here and I saw them yesterday too !
thank you my sweet Carlyn, love you <3 I will take care I promise!!

Valerie 10 September, 2014 - 8:16 am

Wait Sonia! You guys forget about the kids’ room 🙂 Those 2 are so adorable together. Must be faith. They are even look alike. Cuteness overload 🙂 I’m all “ooh” and “ahh” over here looking at their pictures. Good luck with your project! Just curious.. Are you an database architecture?

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 11 September, 2014 - 4:15 pm

Lol a room can easily be transformed if required and we can transform the upstairs living room into a main room 😀
we are lucky they are very kind to each other 😀
a database architecture ? what do you mean ? a database architect, correct ?

Valerie 14 September, 2014 - 12:51 pm

Yes. I’m crazy. Sorry. Didn’t realize I has a typo there. I remember you said you are in IT field but can’t remember if you are in network or database (my auto correct try to send you the word “data se” 😉 ) or software. I’ve been coding for more than 10yrs now 🙂 I love the pix of Shadow and Tess. They are just so cute together

gatos 11 September, 2014 - 5:16 am

Whoa whoa….. Sonia, I look away for two days and YOU’VE ALREADY TORN DOWN THE HOUSE?! Nobody can keep up with you woman, not even your own Shadow! Well, honestly I don’t know where you get all this energy, I am tired just from looking D: Is it in the ice cream?! Magical properties? Maybe I should eat that more often 😀 Ok, I am really just looking for an excuse to eat ice cream.

Congratulations on this huge step!!! Now that you know exactly what you’re dealing with it’s only going to get better right?! Now the fun part can begin 😀 I also wonder whether destroying all of this stuff was in any way kind of… therapeutic? NO? Maybe it’s just me LOL.

Best of luck in the coming days Sonia (and please be careful! I know it sounds grandmotherly, but this stuff you’re doing sounds kind of hardcore.) And I can’t get enough of Tess and little Shadow <3

gatos 11 September, 2014 - 5:17 am

Oh, and hooray for new goodies!!! Can’t wait to hear what you think of the Suqqu trios. Also, I’m finally giving in and ordering Addiction Tuxedo Moon, so I’m gonna go ahead and blame it all on you 😛

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 11 September, 2014 - 2:03 pm

Not even feel bad about the Tuxedo because I loooove it!!! but maybe it’s just me hahaha no, I don’t even feel guilty, that palette is the best ever for me, I hope for you too!

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 11 September, 2014 - 2:08 pm

go ahead eat ice cream 😀 we deserve it although then we may regret it…
Not really going to be better unless some miracle but it’s ok, there is much worst going around and I consider myself lucky.
Therapeutic and necessary, we just had to take the time and do it. Feels surreal to be doing that myself but never too old to learn something new 😀
Thank you Cat, sure I will take care! 🙂

Jillian 11 September, 2014 - 7:43 pm

I totally can relate the all the work that goes into a regular renovation– but you’re clearly going above and beyond! I really admire how organized you are.

I love the idea of using Ikea kitchen drawers. My Alex 9 drawer took a tumble during the move (devastating) and is completely unusable… I’ll probably start to cry again if I spend any more time thinking about the lost makeup. Anyways, I’m looking for something to replace it… maybe something smaller that would be less heavy and difficult to move.

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 11 September, 2014 - 9:17 pm

Hi Jil,
oh no poor Alex and poor make-up 🙁 It would break my heart to see the content destroyed!!!
the Alex I have is on wheels so it is ok to move it around… depending on how big you need the storage to be it now it may be difficult, do you have an idea already ?

antonia 11 September, 2014 - 9:09 pm

Hola Sonia, te va a quedar chulisímo, qué buena pinta! Lo malo o lo bueno de ésto es que luego hay muchos huecos y hay que rellenarlos. Saludos

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 11 September, 2014 - 9:14 pm

Hola Antonia,
espero que si, jejeje dentro de poco sera mas divertido 🙂 Un beso!

Devin 12 September, 2014 - 2:15 am

I am a CCL (Crazy Cat Lady) and I am loving the pics of Tess and Shadow (is that his name, I couldn’t remember). A lot of progress already!

M i d n i t e D e s i r e 13 September, 2014 - 8:32 pm

I’m so impressed with what you’re doing ,your hard work and dedication ,Sonia ! How you do home renovations ,add in a full time job and blog is beyond me. seriously I agree with ‘fenztastic’ , you are really a superwoman!

I’m rooting for you, hang in there ,hun! You’ll be done before you know it 😉

Oh and btw, why don’t those two cuties just get to work?? LOLLLL your pets are so adorable and funny! Everytime I see them makes me smile 😀

Kay 17 September, 2014 - 10:47 am

Hi Sonia, love the photo of Shadow looking up… looks like he/she has a black goatee. So cute! And I am so impressed that you are tackling those “big boy” jobs. I’m such a wimp — scared of drills and saws and all that electrical stuff. Take care, work carefully, and hope you don’t find more unwanted issues!

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 20 September, 2014 - 4:17 pm

hahaha he is such a cutie pie!
We did find unwanted issues LOOOL but I was imagining that I would anyway!!
We are waiting for 2 people to come and correct something they did but I still continue with the rest of the work… so much work !!!
Can’t wait to finish and I still do not manage to see it finished in my mind …

Bea 25 September, 2014 - 2:20 pm

Goodness Sonia! I just came in here again and saw all the added posts and pics! My DIY guru comment on FB was no exaggeration! I am so impressed! No way I could do the stuff you’ve done so far. Love seeing the progress. My fave pics? Why, it’s the ones of the doggeh and kitteh of course!! They are a perfect fit, down to matching coats lol!

212kiki 26 September, 2014 - 2:23 pm

Wohooo our Superwoman can do all 😀 and these cute little kiddies dont want to help with all the work, only lazy hanging around ??

Raglo 5 October, 2014 - 7:02 pm

Update? I got so spoiled the first week with a little something new every day 🙂

Ann 5 November, 2014 - 4:18 am

I am in awe of your site, so much to learn about brushes, I feel like I have been in the dark ages. I have a lot of Shu Uemera brushes and MAC when they were all made in France, three Nars, several Trish McEvoy ( when they still had the wood handles) and that’s about it. What do you think of the Tom Ford blush brush ? I am hesitating on that one because I feel I might be paying to much because of the name ( I know I am anyway !) but is the quality truly exceptional ?
Thank you and give pup and cat a kiss, Ann

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 8 November, 2014 - 12:45 pm

lol pup and cat have been kissed 😀
thank you for your sweet comment, welcome to the brush matrix 😀
The TF is nice but … I find it a bit too dense, so this has pros and cons, not a very multipurpose brush, will work best with sheer products and not that foolproof… you have the Hakuhodo that is just the same if you want… do you want the number ?

Raglo 7 December, 2014 - 1:04 pm

Here’s to the brush room being a collective Christmas present to all of us, but you the most 😉

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 7 December, 2014 - 7:22 pm

oh.. thank you Olga 🙂 I can’t wait to finish, such a mess here 😀
that will be definitely a great present for me… I will be so relieved and happy to get some rest 😉

Raglo 8 December, 2014 - 3:19 pm

I know that real life and proper responsibilities get in the way, but I wish this project was like an advent calender – every day, a new detail/treat is shown, until finally, on the 24th THE REVEAL 😀

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 11 December, 2014 - 2:00 pm

That is such a wonderful idea! Maybe I will do something like that 🙂 … even if it’s not for advent calender…
Materials are very expensive, I am now trying to place some days off work to be able to stay at home and work on it!!

Carrie nash 11 December, 2014 - 10:43 pm

I love your blog. I’m a brush collector myself-more so than makeup (although I do love makeup). Just a quick tip-you may be able to find some drawer knobs at Hobby Lobby. (if you have access to one) they have really nice ones with all different themes (saw some makeup inspired ones before) and good prices-especially if you catch them when they r 40% off (the sales change weekly).

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 21 December, 2014 - 11:59 pm

Thank you Carrie, I started having a look too !
Glad we are such a nice community of brush lovers 🙂

Tara 22 December, 2014 - 2:50 pm

Hi, Sonia. I just want to say you are living my dream! With 3 Kids, I don’t yet have an extra room for makeup. But my daughter and I have been secretly planning one for when we do! She’s 7 🙂 I think you are very brave to take on such a huge task, and I know it will look wonderful! 🙂

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 29 December, 2014 - 5:02 pm

Hi Tara,
As you say, it is a dream! I am surprised I can even realize it, it will be my little paradise!
Now we are getting to the end of the walls and roof, this week we plan on doing the floor and then we can start moving things inside! It’s a huge work, my bf always wants things to be “as perfect as possible” between brackets because we are not professionals so we will do the best we can! 🙂 but that’s why it’s taking so long…
I really hope my project will inspire you somehow and will make you secretly dream of your own future make-up room! Mine is very small but I think I did the best I could to make it look nice and functional 😀 It’s all in my imagination for now, let’s see how it looks when it’s done!!!
It’s absolutely amazing that you can plan that with your daughter, adorable!!!

Raglo 26 December, 2014 - 11:51 pm

Expensive brushes need an expensive home 😉

MWang 30 December, 2014 - 7:39 am

Hey Sonia!

So amazing that you guys are doing pretty much everything on your own o.O…

I was thinking for the decoration of your walls, if you want to stay in the ‘Japanese atmosphere’, you could hang fans (not fan brushes, actual fans :p) on a wall where there’s no furniture hanging, that way it’s not only functional stuff on the walls :3! A friend of mine has some in her bed room, i think one big one and then 2-3 smaller ones, and you can choose very bright and colorful ones with sakura flowers or golden motifs for example, or very traditional ones with calligraphy :)! It honestly looks super good, and doesn’t have to cost a lot (either if you go back to Japan or maybe even at your local Asian market ;)!)
Anyway, just an idea! I also like to buy velvet fabric to line my drawers for jewels or precious things (like brushes :p), it’s cheap, it looks fancy and prevents scratches! And make sure to check out MUJI.com, they have super cute acrylic storage ideas, i love them for my everyday makeup 🙂

MWang 30 December, 2014 - 7:41 am

Oh or maybe you can throw in a flamenco fan, for your Spanish roots ^^!

Tara 4 January, 2015 - 3:19 am

Hi, Sonia. Yes, paradise is the correct word for your room! My daughter is not allowed to use make up yet, except some organic make up that I have found for kids. And it’s so cute that she always talks of “OUR” make up room. haha. I think you will definitely realize your dream soon, I have seen your extremely busy schedule, and with the exception of all the travel (which I used to do for work but have since put my foot down and am not travelling as much) I can totally relate to your stress levels! But I think it is good to be stressed about so lovely a project especially when you reach that moment when you can sit down, take a deep breath, and realize that you are finally done!!! 🙂 Kudos to you! (and to your bf who is letting you do this and being great about it!!!) My partner says he will be as supportive…. but that’s another story….hahaha

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 4 January, 2015 - 2:29 pm

Hi Tara, so cute about your daughter! it’s so fun to involve her the way you do, I love it!
Paradise is the right way to call it, I would love to enter the room and see a sort of paradise, not really a “desk” and a “vanity” and a “bench”, but a relaxing place to be with functionality. It would be sad if after all that effort you enter the room and it just looks like an office 😀
Rome has not been built in a day, I know (I am not a patient person any longer) but I am feeding my bf vitamins for him to go faster because I just can’t wait any more!!!
I never thought he would be as supportive, it was a surprise to me, maybe when our partners really see our happy faces they realize the benefits of truly being supportive 😀 so you never know until it starts happening… 😉

ghkim9 10 March, 2015 - 6:02 pm

can’t wait to see the final product! i have a question about brush storage. do you think it is better to store brushes bristles up, bristles down, or flat? i always thought that it was better to store them bristles down so that the hairs do not splay, and not flat, so the shape does not get deformed, but i see everyone storing them hair up or flat, so i was curious, what do you recommend?

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 24 March, 2015 - 1:32 pm

The manufactures advise to keep them inside their boxes when they are not used.
I will soon show you how I store mine (I am moving into my brushroom now), I can’t store them up as they would take a lot of space… so I will share and tell you exactly what I do to preserve them.
most of them I keep in drawers flat, with a wooden spacer under the ferrule so that the heads are not loosing their shape against the flat surface, it depends on the brush, can’t wait to share 🙂 I hope it will help.

Raglo 26 June, 2015 - 12:06 pm

Or… Did I miss it already …?

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 26 June, 2015 - 8:02 pm

no Olga, it’s coming 😀
oh I saw your comment on Insta, I will reply but I have to search those compacts, I couldn’t read the name on the pic 😀

Raglo 29 July, 2015 - 11:38 pm

Ooh! I’ll have to get comfy and make a bowl of popcorn for when it happens :D.

No prob! It was the Dior 30 Montaigne and a Shu ready to wear palette, which isn’t available anymore. I was more curious about the shadow performance in general- pigmentation, wear, creasing, fallout and powdery mess in the compact. I’ve recently come to the conclusion that eyeshadow is the single most consistently disappointing category of makeup I use. I’m drawn in by the alluring composition of shades and the packaging, but once it gets down to actual performance… Let’s just say, all I have are versions of the same type of pink/mauve colours in my collection and that’s all I keep looking at, because as it is, none of the ones I own work well enough for me not to want to replace them with something else, but at the same time, how many purple eyeshadows (that crease like a %&#€”) does one need??

Ahh I rambling 😀

Glad you’re back in action! I was becoming concerned, you do live in the Alps and sporty cars and winding mountain roads make for sinister fuel for someone with as wild an imagination as mine!

Sonia G. 30 July, 2015 - 8:41 pm

Hi Olga!
I hope you will like it but please I beg you, no high expectations!!! or you may be disappointed 🙁

Today I would say many have decreased quality, I am purchasing Shu at the moment, I don’t know how it’s getting on lately, same for Dior, except for a few palettes, the very recent ones just launched are a disappointment to me as they really have no lasting power.
I would direct you more towards Surratt which have excellent pigmentation and interesting shades. He has great purple shadows too!

Coming back in slow motion though 🙂 but happy to be here! thank you for your friendship and support!!!

Raglo 30 July, 2015 - 10:40 pm

Surratt huh… My friend you are trying to bankrupt me 😀

I’m actually going to NY in a month, so perhaps I’ll get to touch them in person at Barney’s ;). Although I’m somewhat more excited about maybe trying out some drugstore stuff, as it is all so ridiculously affordable there. Where I am, the difference is too close so I prefer high-end.

Your home could not disappoint me! I have no expectations, just a giddy curiosity about what you’ve been doing with yourself :). No matter what you do, it’ll be you, and that’s what interests me, much more so than designer furniture and wallpaper!

Elisa 18 January, 2021 - 11:23 am

Did you ever finish this project? Where would it be posted?

Sonia G. 19 January, 2021 - 2:21 pm

Hi Elisa,
waw this takes me back, yes it is now finished! I posted some pics or snaps but nothing like a full post, which actually I should probably do! thank you for reminding me!
It’s a great idea to post as it has changed so much.

Thank you!! <3
