THE SUPERSTARS BUILDER 2

by Sonia G.

If this is the first time you hear about the Superstars series, this series features limited edition brushes that can only be manufactured at specific moments. What we do is that we work on specific designs and we essentially wait until it becomes possible to manufacture them, and only then the brushes enter production.
These releases may include new brushes you’ve requested, discontinued designs that are highly in demand, or prototypes I developed in the past but couldn’t produce at the time. There are more details about this series here in case you are interested.

So far, in this series we were able to manufacture this newest Builder 2, the Crease 1 and Crease 2, the Detail 1 and Detail 2 and the Flat Definer 1.

It has been really fun to read your messages about these brushes, why you love them, and how you use them, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about them!! Today I am really excited to introduce the Builder 2. This is the one that I use the most from all of these Superstars and it’s actually a design that I wanted to launch in 2017, but couldn’t.

This new Superstars Builder 2 is an iteration of the former Builder Two from the Original Fundamental series. The previous, (now‑discontinued) version featured saikoho goat bristles while this limited edition is bundled with blue squirrel bristles. It’s not an identical brush, but it comes close in terms of shape and size, I will tell you more in the comparisons below.

I originally wanted to release this exact version of the Builder 2 back in 2017, but at the time I had to go with saikoho goat bristles. It turned out to be a wonderful brush, and so many of you really loved it.
Last year, while working on the Superstars, we revisited the idea and explored whether this version could be made with squirrel bristles. That’s when we were finally able to plan this brush. We went through several prototypes to refine the shape and make it as effective as possible and this is the result.

Sometimes, changing the type of bristles or just the batch can completely change how a brush performs. It happens more often than you’d think, and even strategic adjustments to the shape aren’t always enough to bring it back to its original purpose.
With this Builder 2, though, I really feel we’ve achieved the ideal balance. It feels dense and compact, yet incredibly soft. It picks up product beautifully and while it has some movement, it stays stable right through to the tip. This is the kind of brush we can reach for every day, not just for softer formulas. Even with its softness, it delivers.
From all the Superstars we’ve released, this is the one I use the most.

THE SUPERSTARS BUILDER 2

This Builder 2 is a very soft but effective laydown brush. With this particular shape and size, it can navigate easily whether you have small lid space or more room to work with.

The handle is thick and quite heavy, it is approximately 13mm wide so it definitely feels substantial. This brush weights approx. 14 grams.
For the Superstars series, the logo is placed at the bottom of the handle. I previously mentioned with the Alpine eye brushes that things that appear simple can sometimes involve a great deal of complexity behind the scenes, and applying the logos at the bottom is one of those very tricky challenges when it comes to hand made brushes.
I’m grateful that the artisans are willing to do this on these brushes as I know how demanding the process is, it requires a lot of care and time.

The bristles of this Builder 2 are 14 mm long, it has a pinched, curved ferrule.

This brush is really thick and dense at the base, but the bristles flex and have movement. From the side, you can see that it tapers, so you can use the flat sides or the tip when you need more precision, the tip is very stable as it is supported by the thick layers.

FUNCTION AND PURPOSE

This is a Builder brush, it’s designed to laydown eyeshadow, we can use the sides or work with the tip. This is why this shape is quite convenient because if you don’t have a lot of space, you can play with the angle and it will be able to target the placement with more precision.
It can target the mobile lid, the outer v, softly carve a placement, work under the brow area.

I use it to apply one shadow on the mobile lid, another on the outer V, another in the crease, and even along the lash line, all with the same brush. It handles all powder textures, so you can use it for an entire look, whether you’re working with mattes or shimmers.
If you want to use a fluffier brush to blend at the very end you definitely can, and it’s a good thing to do it, but most of the time I get away using this brush for all steps.
Just keep a microfiber cloth nearby and wipe the brush between shades so you don’t carry over any product when switching colors.

COMPARISONS

Superstars Builder 2 vs Fundamentals Smudger One, Builder One and Builder Two

We can think of this Builder 2 as a blend of three previous brushes: it uses same bristles as the Fundamentals Smudger One, has a similar shape as the Fundamentals Builder One, but it is scaled to the size of the Fundamentals Builder Two.

As you can see here, I love dense, directional, tapered brushes! But you will feel that with this Builder 2 there is more movement and flexibility in the bristles, and that’s also why it is more forgiving because it won’t stamp the product, it still allows for a soft gradual building.

The three brushes with the red handles are all discontinued. Since we brought back the Smudger One a few times and we still have a lot of requests for bringing it back in stock, I can tell you that we managed to schedule another batch and we will have a delivery around the end of summer 2026- it will be the same brush but it will come on this Superstar handle, not on the usual red handle like before.

Superstars Builder 2 – Fundamentals Builder Two

The Builder Two from the Original Fundamentals was bundled with saikoho goat bristles, since these were thicker bristles in comparison to the silkier blue squirrel bristles, they gave a thicker body to the Builder Two.
This Superstars Builder 2 has longer bristles since we had to adapt the shape to match the purpose of the brush the best way possible, but the ferrule is the same size and pinch.
I always wanted the Original Fundamentals Builder Two to have a more tapered shape but it was quite tricky. This Superstars Builder 2 is exactly the shape that I was aiming for: extra thickness at the base with a nicely tapered shape but still enough volume and thickness at the tip – which allows for more strength and control.

Superstars Builder 2 – Fundamentals Builder One

This new brush might remind you of the Builder One from the Original Fundamentals line, which was bundled with brown-dyed saikoho goat bristles. While the design is similar, the two brushes are quite different in size.
The Builder One was created for very precise placement, it’s really small and has a very small working surface on its sides.

If you’ve been following me since 2017, you might remember that my goal was to fill very specific gaps with my brush designs. Most small brushes lacked strength at the tip, they were precise but often a little too thin to work with shimmers. At the time, I was searching for a brush that would let me place shimmers or bold shades precisely and with intensity. I loved shimmers, but not necessarily all over the lid for a day at the office. I wanted a brush that would let me place just a touch in the center of the mobile lid, or create gradients, or work by sections along the lash line.
This Superstars Builder 2 does not have the firmness and strength of that Builder One because it has more flexibility and these bristles are much softer, that said, for a brush with squirrel bristles, it has strength.

Superstars Builder 2 – SKY Jumbo Blender

If you are wondering how big the Builder 2 is, this is a side by side with the Jumbo Blender. If you own the Jumbo Blender, even though these are different brushes, you will have a better idea of its shape and size.

Superstars Builder 2 – Fundamentals Builder Three

Same with the Builder Three, this is to give you an idea just in case you have this brush. The Builder Three is a more traditional type of builder (laydown) brush, quite similar in size to the MAC 239.

I’m adding my vote for a restock on crease 1 and crease 2. The other brushes in the superstar lineup are superb. I can’t believe I missed out on them. Sonia please restock if you can.

Dear Sonia, how does the Superstars Builder 2 compare to the old Suqqu F brush in squirrel hair and the Chikuhodo GSN-9 brush? This two I love and use daily. And also as shape how does it compare to your your TS2 from the 2024 Traditions series, another brush I adore and use daily. Thank you!

Just wanted to say I got the Flat Definer 1, my first Sonia G brush and I love it. The blue color is so rich, so pretty. It brings me happiness to see it and use it. And it gets me so very close to the lash line. I wish I had known about Fude when the first Superstars were released but I’m definitely getting the ones that become available. Thank you!

hi sonia, when looking on the website, the brush and microfibre towel seems to be not available for many regions, is there a reason for this? Was super excited for this brush and its so sad if we can’t get it directly from the website

Hi Sonia, I also don’t see this brush on the website. I can see all of the new and rereleased brush accessories but no Superstar Builder 2. Fingers crossed that it’s just a glitch but should I send an email to Beautylish? Thank you

Will the Detail One brush come back in stock? I bought it during the May restock but Beautylish sent me the wrong item and now obviously since it sold out I can’t receive it anymore and I’m legitimately so upset.
