I always need to spend time in gardens when I travel to Japan. It’s a precious moment where I can hit pause, disconnect, feel the serenity surrounding me and appreciate the moment. I feel happy there, calm and curious, I wonder why the garden has been set up in that particular way, beyond the aesthetic beauty. It’s obvious that Japanese Gardens are not randomly architected and that there is indeed a lot of thought behind each choice, each positioning and element.
Working with the artisans on these Holiday’s projects has allowed me to learn more about Japanese Gardens, and it completely changed the way I look at them today. It was already a delight to spend time in a garden, but being able to understand a little more about them makes the experience entirely different.

Today I would love to show you and also share all the details of this Japanese Gardens Maki-e brush set. There is a special brush holder planned for this Holiday that is also inspired by Japanese Gardens, it will be available at a later date as it’s still in the hands of the artisans. This maki-e set and the upcoming Holiday brush holder share the same theme, but not the same design.
THE JAPANESE GARDENS MAKI-E BRUSH SET

Before we talk about the handles and the brushes in this set, there is something that I want to share about the Maki-e collection.
You may be familiar with my previous Maki-e sets, there was the Sunset Cranes with black and red handles in December 2023, the Summer Koi with black and blue handles in June 2024, and now this Japanese Gardens with black and bronze handles is joining this series.

Initially, these 3 eye sets were planned to be launched together in December 2023, with the idea that you could choose the set that best fitted your application preferences and your taste. When we started to plan technically, and also financially, we faced several issues: the number of maki-e handles that we could make was limited, the availability of the materials was also very limited. For many reasons, it was not realistic. We had to split the sets, try to release them separately and see what was feasible as we moved on.
Even spacing and increasing the production of each set did not allow us to cover the demand for the Sunset Cranes or the Summer Koi, but it helped a lot to make it smoother at the launch and more achievable for the manufacturers. We didn’t know if or how this would exactly work out, but we are very happy that we were able to make this trio of maki-e sets.
Since the launch of the Sunset Cranes set, I have received many requests for face brushes with the same materials as the matching eye sets, I can confirm that there is indeed something in process.
If you have been collecting or using Fude for a long time, you probably already know what shapes or what materials you prefer and why. The 3 brushes in this Japanese Gardens set are my favorite shapes, paired with my favorite mix of materials: extremely soft saikoho goat and white canadian squirrel bristles. The way these bristles pick up and diffuse the product is outstanding, they release the product progressively and it’s seamlessly blended. The saikoho goat adds fullness and just the right stability and strength.
I think it’s wonderful to own essential brush shapes with different mixes or materials as they will allow us to play with nuances in the way the brushes perform, I hope this makes sense and gives you a little more insight on what was on my mind with these specific designs. We will dive into the details of each brush further down in this post.
THE HANDLES
This handle is the same shape and length as the ones in the previous maki-e sets and also the Traditions series. These are the most difficult handles to manufacture due to their curvy shape as they require a lot of time and effort from the woodworking artisans, time and effort are very expensive factors when it comes to craftsmanship. If you are just discovering my brushes, I need to mention it because this is something that makes us more unique in all our manufacturing processes.

Once the maple wood handles are shaped, sanded and ready, the wood is then coated several times and with different lacquers each time. We use a special technique that offers an optical depth in the finish and that can only be achieved using the most luxurious lacquers, this allows the bronze to peek through the black lacquer.
THE MAKI-E ILLUSTRATION

The bronze gradient that peeks through the black lacquer represents the light that reflects from the moon and the lantern, the lantern is lighting our way through the stepping stones.
Japanese Gardens is going to be the theme for this Holiday, both this set and the brush holder are inspired by them.
This design is the continuation of the Sunset Cranes, it’s getting dark, the cranes left and now the lanterns are on, the light reflects on the stepping stones and you can discover the gardens under a different perspective.
Showcasing such small details on the handles with the methods that the artisans use is a challenging process, it limits us in the colours and the choice of the elements that we wish to apply on them. For these handles, we added more details in comparison to the previous maki-e sets and the colours are red, gold and silver.
THE STEPPING STONES
I love to sit beside the ponds, observe the trees, the leaves, the rocks, the structure of the garden, but my favorite moment in a garden is when I find stepping stones. Paths in Japanese Gardens have a particular meaning, and stepping stones are an important element of a path, there is so much to read about them.
The reason I feature them here is because of the feeling of joy they evoke, and how they encourage me to be in the moment. I grew up in the middle of nowhere, we had no roads, only small trails and we had to cross many streams. Walking on stepping stones was something that I had to do on a daily basis, this left so many happy memories. Stepping stones are an important souvenir of my childhood that indirectly connects me to Japanese Gardens.
This is Isuien Garden in Nara, it’s probably the Japanese Garden that I have enjoyed the most so far, it’s peaceful, so quiet, and there are so many stepping stones along the path.
Whether you are on your own or with your family, it’s truly wonderful to be able to walk there and enjoy the tranquillity, the sounds, the colours and textures.

THE BRUSHES
There are 3 brushes in this eye set, a very pointy pencil, a builder, and a crease brush. The 3 brushes in this set are a mix of very soft saikoho goat bristles and white canadian squirrel bristles.

As I mentioned earlier in this post, I wanted that some of the brushes across the 3 maki-e sets shared a similar shape, but with different materials so that they would offer a different experience. For a Fude lover, it’s interesting how similar brushes, bundled with a different type of bristles, can influence the application, and how they interact with the same products.

The brushes that share a similar shape across the sets are the following:
The little pencils in the Sunset Cranes and the Japanese Gardens
The laydown brush in the 3 maki-e sets
The crease brush in the Summer Koi and the Japanese Gardens.

THE PENCIL BRUSH

This is a very pointy pencil, it was bundled with a mix of saikoho goat bristles and white canadian squirrel bristles.
Even though the tip has movement, it is very controllable and precise, even quite surgical in precision.
We can define the lash line, target the placement almost lash by lash. It works with the precision and feel of a synthetic eyeliner brush, but with the grip of a brush made for powders.
This pencil brush is truly amazing to define with extreme precision and if you want to use powder as eyeliner, it will be so effortless.

It offers a more sharp and neat placement in comparison to the Sunset Cranes pencil brush. They are both similar in shape, but because the tip of Sunset Cranes has more movement in comparison, the feel and control is slightly different.
Many of you requested the Pencil from the Sunset Cranes to come back and stay in the permanent collection. I know that many of you love it so much, but hopefully you will also love this version which is a little more determined in comparison, but still super soft.
THE BUILDER BRUSH

This builder has a side surface of approx 8mm (wide) x 9.5mm (height), this width combined with this length allow us to work comfortably on the entire mobile lid, but also to target the placement where needed, for example in the center of the lid or on the outer v. Since it is quite thick and has density, we have strength and flexibility to build the placement, and we can also use the tip for definition since this shape gives it so much stability.
Here are the three laydown brushes that were bundled with different materials depending on the maki-e set:

Front

Sideways
I will explain how these brushes differ from each other, and in which circumstances I would use one rather than another.
The volume, thickness and strength of each brush will vary depending on the type of natural bristles used, but this Japanese Gardens is my favorite laydown brush so far, and even ever. The size, shape and this mix make it so effortless with the products that I use the most for my day-to-day application.
The Summer Koi Kakishibu brush is the one I would rather pair with more difficult shadows or shimmers, because of the additional power in the bristles – which is quite important with the product pickup.
The Japanese Gardens is the one I would rather pair with matte shadows, specially if I am going to build or structure the outer v application with a dark shadow. Since it releases the product progressively, it allows to structure the placement smoothly so we can obtain an evenly placed and diffused outer v. It just gives us that extra time to work the product before the application is final. This means we are less likely to waste time blending, or less likely to overly blend and end up with an uneven result.
The Japanese Gardens laydown brush has more fluffiness and blending abilities in comparison to the Sunset Cranes one. In comparison, when applying a dark shadow with the Sunset Cranes laydown brush, which has only blue squirrel bristles, you may notice that it may release more of the product upon first contact, but it may also skip if the skin has movement, texture or wrinkles; the placement may need just a little more tuning in order to be diffused evenly. The Sunset Cranes laydown brush feels softer, but the Japanese Gardens laydown brush will release the product more gradually and blend it more effectively. I have noticed that with a mix of saikoho and white canadian squirrel bristles, the application tends to last longer or fade more evenly, this is probably because the application ends up being more evenly integrated onto the skin.
THE CREASE BRUSH

This crease brush has a beautiful fluffy shape, it combines the ideal balance between softness and strength. It has enough density for a generous pick up, but it’s still airy and diffuses the application so effortlessly.

When we need a bigger crease brush, there are quite a few options available that can do a great job, but I think that it’s more difficult to find a small crease brush that can work with precision, yet deliver a perfectly diffused result.
I am often aiming for designs that can save us time and effort and that’s where these brushes will truly stand out.

The Summer Koi is close to this crease brush in terms of design, it has the same ferrule and same length of bristles.
The Summer Koi has kakishibu saikoho goat bristles, which are a joy to work with. These persimmon dyed bristles have such a reliable grip on the product and they convert brushes into insane workhorses!
The nuance with these two is that the Japanese Gardens Crease brush will deliver a more diffused placement, the intensity is going to be more evenly distributed across the placement. The Summer Koi is going to deliver a more intense placement, concentrate that intensity a little more at the start of the placement and keep the intensity towards the center of the brush’s path.
The Japanese Gardens crease is a more forgiving brush, it releases the product more gradually as it blends, so if you love to use dark colors for example but are a little scared to handle them, this will be such a great tool to pair them with.

I also wanted to show you the TS3 brush from the Traditions Special series, they have a similar length of bristles, but the shape is denser, firmer at the top.
The TS3 is more of a blender type of brush, with a bigger and more powerful surface.

THE PACKAGING
Just like the two previous Maki-e set, this Japanese Gardens set also comes in a vertical wooden box crafted with paulownia.
You can see that the design has evolved and the box is also a little different than the previous two, but it has the same dimensions.
We started with just a washi paper around the box for the first Sunset Cranes set, then we were able to apply a black monochrome print on the front for the Summer Koi, and now on this box we have a color print and gold foil for the logo application.

Just like with the previous sets, this box can be repurposed as a mini brush holder. It’s not solid and sturdy like a walnut wooden brush holder would be, but it protects the brushes during transport and can be reused at home.
The brushes are wrapped in Japanese washi paper, neatly folded and secured with a Mizuhiki knot.

Every little detail in this set has been made in Japan. We love to showcase a variety of Japanese traditions in our packaging as it adds a special value to the set, and hopefully, you can also reuse them.

We hope that you love how this set looks and what it offers in terms of functionality. I created this set with the idea that anyone can easily use it, whether you are a collector, or just recently discovered Fude!
This Japanese Gardens Maki-e set is limited edition, the price for the set is 159 USD. It will be available on Beautylish starting on the 12th of November 2024 at 10 am PT.

This set is absolutely stunning. From the bristles to the details of the maki-e. I enjoyed reading every detail. I love the background stories of how the brushes came to be. Thanks for sharing. The packaging is also stunning, anyone would be happy to have these.
Thank you Sunsarae, you are always giving me so much love, thank you so much!!! <3 <3 <3
Thank you for sharing your inspiration. What a beautiful childhood you had. The brushes are so beautiful and now I will think about stepping stones.
Hi Charli!! it was really a very special place, I will try to go back there this year, everything is in ruins and after 40 years, I wonder if I can still find the same trails! thank you so much for your kind message!! <3
I’m not gonna lie, when I saw the name of the collection, I was hoping for a green accent colour in the handles, but these are still absolute stunners! I’m also very happy about the bristle choice because I really enjoy the ones you included in the Traditions Select set. Now that you’ve explained that all three sets were meant to be released together, it all makes sense, because (even though I absolutely love it) I must admit I found it a bit strange when you released a maki-e set in the middle of summer. I can’t wait to get my hands on these and complete my collection and since they’re 159USD, I might not even need Beautylish’s help with the shipping!
Scratch the last part of what I said before, I just saw the price in euros and it’s 173,5, so I still need Beautylish’s help. I’m still very excited to get this stunning set, though, since I can’t buy any brush holders. I can’t wait to see what other beautiful pieces you have in store for us next year. Keep up the amazing work you and the artisans are doing! Lots of love from Spain
Hi Paloma, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! First of all, yes, initially I really wanted to include green, because that would make so much sense, a que si? 🙂 It was just not working so we decided to give the green accent with the washi paper, it was an idea of the artisans 🙂 When working with maki-e, we have so many constraints and we have to adapt, but I am so happy that you love them! About the shipping, I will ask Beautylish to help you. They are still working on the shipping issue to Spain, it’s a big change that’s why it’s taking so long, but it will happen and we will be able to ship to Spain over 150 euros again… Thank you again for being here and to support us in spite of the issues with shipping!
Please take care of yourself and I will reach out directly by email! <3
Congrats on this release, Sonia! The attention to detail makes these releases so special! Is WCS suitable for combination/oily skin types?
Also, if you use these paulownia boxes in the future, please consider adding a felt liner on the bottom similar to the big brush holders. I use the box as a holder for the Summer Koi set and worry about the brushes chipping on the bottom.
I am excited for the maki-e face brushes! (Maybe kakishibu, undyed/dyed saikoho, or fox and mother of pearl maki-e inlay)
Hi D! thank you so much!! I think it is, I have no issues so far, since there is saikoho goat in the mix it will help absorb the excess oils and if you wipe the brushes gently on a microfiber cloth after using them, it will remove the excess oils gathered on the bristles. I imagine that you use a primer too?
Thank you for the suggestion! <3
Thank you so much for your reply! 🙂
I use concealer + setting powder + setting spray to prime my lids. I do use a microfiber towel between uses as well. Is your towel still planned to return? Can these be washed at the same frequency as goat or 1-2 times a year for squirrel?
Hi D, 🙂 yes the towel is planned to restock! I wash eye brushes more regularly in comparison to face brushes with same material, specially brushes that go near the eyes. I will wash the pencil brush more frequently than the crease brush for example, I would say even with the same frequency as a goat brush – I am careful with the process though. I hope this helps but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate!
I really love brushes and have been collecting them for a while but I personally believe the price of these is very high compared to other ones in the market. I wish you lots of luck on this launch but I also wanted to share some feedback from a person who has been buying many of your releases, even has the large brush holder because I could see the value there.
I hope you return to launches with some other products that are more affordable also for your international customers (that already have to pay adicional importing fees)
Hi Gilda, thank you for your feedback! I appreciate it. All the brands are different and will have different production costs. If you know me and my brushes, you know that what drives me is my passion for craftsmanship, it’s not the profit. Our prices reflect the production cost, the work, the materials and they are not randomly decided. I always keep them as low as they can possibly be, it means we could not go lower than that.
Hopefully we can continue working with the artisans and bring other projects that will have a lower price point. Thank you for your love and for your understanding, I hope you continue considering our brushes in the future! With love <3
I’m so excited for these Sonia, they look beautiful. I can’t wait to add them to my collection and use them on my beauty YouTube channel ❤️
Hi Hannah, thank you so much!!! I am so happy that you told me about your channel, I just subscribed, you are gorgeous!!! And you live in Wales? I love Wales! I was in Portmeirion a few years ago and it’s such a special place, I wish I could go back there in 2025. <3 <3 <3
Hi Sonia! It is such a lovely idea of maki-e collections in 3 different sets. After reading the comparison in this post, I found I love the sunset cranes the most, but if it is possible to have any restock for this set? Because I read your previous post that you mentioned there will be a small amount of restock of summer koi one, I just wonder if it is possible to have the sunset cranes one to be restocked too.
Hi Jasmine, we all have our preferences and it’s interesting to read about them!
The small restock will be a special one and at this date, several things are not fixed yet, that’s why I need to wait before I can share what will happen.
We are thinking about some options, sharing your interest is very helpful! we appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback, thank you!!
Hi Sonia,
First of all congrats to you and the artisans for the hard work to create this beautiful set. I was lucky enough last year to get the Sunset Cranes set which I love and I was sure you will do something amazing again.
I read the article and you mentioned about some face brushes to match these eye sets (not sure which ones). I would love to know more details about them (what type of hair, set or individual, which eye set will match and when is possible an approximate date of release) with a longer time before realising. For me and I think other people will be very helpful to know if and when we should start to save money for them.
In my dream I wish you will create an angled blush brush with squirrel hair and make-e handle (similar shape and dimension with the angled brush from Surratt).
I love your brushes and really appreciate your attention to detail, perfectionism, aesthetics and the high quality.
All the best
Dear Alya, thank you so much for your kind message! As soon as I can reveal the details I will let you know, unfortunately it will still take a very long time before we will see them!
I will make sure I let you all know a lot of time in advance!
There is indeed one angled brush and I am sure you will love it! it’s still too soon to share any details but I see exactly what you mean 😉
Thank you again for your encouragement, we appreciate your kind feedback so so much!!!
That’s great news! Can’t wait to see the matching face brushes! I hope you will sell them individually as well because for some of us will be easier to purchase and choose the ones we really want (ideally all but not always is possible). If I will get a blush brush for each of them (Sunset Cranes and this one) I will be very happy. The angled face brushes are very versatile and I am glad you have at least one in plan.
I just received the Japanese Gardens Maki-e set.The brushes are extremely beautiful and look like a piece of art.
Thank you again for such an amazing job and I am looking forward to see what’s coming next.
Hi Alya, Amazing, thank you for getting the Japanese Gardens Maki-e set! For the face brushes, it’s still too soon to say what will happen but I think you will love it!
In the meantime, I wish you lots of fun with the brush sets, I hope you use them often and love them!! please take care and talk to you soon!! <3
Never been to Japan. But the Landscape is what calls me to visit. That and Sumo Wrestling !
Hi Denise! How interesting! On my list is to attend Sumo Wrestling, it’s such a ritual! Just recently had a look at the rules and it was mind blowing.
I love how the landscapes are calming, and even when it’s super crowded people are so respectful that even for me, not that comfortable in crowds, it’s not an issue at all!
Hi Sonia,
I am so excited I was able to grab these today to complete the trio! When I checked the site and the set was still available several hours later, I had to grab a second for my mom. I have a feeling that these will be my favorite of the three just by looking at the shapes of these heads.
I love reading the stories behind them and how the images from each set depict the stories and moments in time. Summer Koi and Japanese Garden are near and dear to my heart. These images evoke nostalgic memories of my childhood visits with my grandparents. Although not exactly Japanese in design, their garden had characters of what one would associate with a Japanese garden complete with Koi ponds, steppingstones, benches, a tiny bridge over a pond and lampposts. Memories of my grandparents that I treasure and these images are now found in items that I use every day!
I appreciate your dedication to this craft and feel lucky that in this day and age, we can still have access to handmade items that are imbued with ancient techniques and quality craftsmanship. These do not come cheap! Especially for handmade items from Japan. Just want to drop a few words of support for what you do for those of us looking for and appreciate the quality and craftsmanship in each of your design.
I may have discovered you late (only last year) but am sure glad I did! I’m ecstatic that you’re re-releasing Mount Fuji I and the Mini Keyaki I for us late comers. Can’t wait for the Mini Keyaki sheer buffer, also. Do you have a general time timeline for these items? I hope you will release more brushes in the min size. I keep going back to your previous post to read the preview of the upcoming releases to see what else I need, lol. I think I need want them all!
Keep up the wonderful work, Sonia!
QP
Hello Quinn! So happy that you got it and that you love it!!
I imagine that your grandparents’ gardens also had the ability to calm you? it’s wonderful when something connects us to our childhood in such a great and nostalgic way! I miss my grandparents so much.
I entirely agree with you, in this day and age we have to encourage craftsmanship whenever we can, it’s not easy to preserve traditions and many dye with time as they are not passed through generations. Your messages truly help us a lot, we aren’t many behind these pieces but we are so passionate and we love so much what we do!
When the artisans read your comments (and they do), they tell me they feel really blessed to have such a wonderful community around us!
With regards to the next availability of the stocks, the Mini Keyaki should be available between the 15th and the end of December, the Mount Fuji brush holder from 2020 maybe around the same time but the issue is that they prefer I don’t share dates because during the Holiday season it could be delayed.
The Mini Keyaki Sheer Buffer I don’t know, maybe around those dates, we are doing our best to bring them asap but it is going to depend on when exactly the production is finished and if the logistics run smooth!
You are such a wonderful person, thank you so much, the impact you have on our mood is beyond amazing, thank you!!
Sending you lots of love <3
I am so grateful that you released these three sets separately, as I would never have been able to afford them all had they been released at the same time. These are superbly made, and well worth the money; I have many fude with various hair types, but these are my first brushes from your line and they absolutely blew me away. Please consider making some of the maki-e face brushes in the squirrel, even if the price is high per brush, because the large, densely-packed squirrel eyeshadow brush from the Sunset Cranes lineup has become my all time favorite eye brush. If you could follow suit to your spaced releases of the eye brush sets, and also space the releases of the face brushes so that those of us with limited funds can have a chance to collect them all, it would be much appreciated. Also, I know that you do not have details to share on the new limited brush holder, other than that it will be more expensive than the others because of the materials, but what I am wondering is if it will be roughly the same size and shape as the Mt. Fuji and classic, or if it will be smaller or of a different shape or design? Thank you again for not compromising on the quality of these brush sets in the interest of price, they are truly works of art which make me happy every time I look at or use them.
Hi Susan, These are your first brushes from my line? That’s amazing, it’s a wonderful set to start! I will try to do my best but at this stage I am not sure yet what is feasible in terms of selling them separately or not. We have some ideas and we are working on them.
About the brush holder, it’s a similar shape as a previous release but a different artwork, more intricate, it has been so difficult to make it happen that we almost stopped the project. It’s thanks to the determination and passion of the artisans that we managed and we are all very happy with the results. Now, we sincerely hope that you will love it, that would be really wonderful!! We are preparing for the launch and hopefully in around two weeks we will start to share the details! Thank you for your amazing support, it means so much to us.
