Sonia G – The Soft Brush Book

I always need -and LOVE- to carry a good amount of brushes with me. It can be prototypes or brushes that I buy during my trip. Since they are often rare, expensive or confidential, they always need to be with me, in my hand luggage! Also, during a trip is when I want and have more time to play with brushes so I tend to grab some just to experiment with them.

I wanted to find a solution that was roomy but not bulky. Lightweight too because the brushes are already heavy enough. Another issue I encountered in the past is that smaller brushes tend to fall out of some brush rolls, I would find some brushes swimming at the bottom of my travel handbag at the end of the trip. So, that’s what I wanted to achieve: a secure, lightweight, compact, roomy, non-bulky case for the brushes.

Specs

It’s 24.5 cm high and 12 cm large. It’s “soft” because it’s not a hard shell, it still has padding but it remains flexible.

It’s configured a bit like a book, with one double sided page in the center and two full size flaps, one on each side.

I find side flaps to be safer than flaps that are attached at the top of the brushes, sometimes those “top-flaps” tend to press on the bristles and alter their shape. I thought we could do something useful with those flaps so we added zips and we can use them as storage that can be cleaned easily – they are made with a reinforced plastic material.

Those flaps double as storage for smaller items or for a very dirty brush for example that needs isolation. For size reference, the flaps are big enough to store a Sculpt One brush inside.

These flaps are not made for sharp or thick objects, when the Brush Book is closed, those items could put pressure on the brushes and damage them.

Capacity and functionality

Both sides have stacked compartments for brushes, this is not necessarily to load as many brushes as there are compartments, but to allow a scattered organization that fits the shape of the brushes or items that you want to carry. It gives more options to organize the brushes.

For example, if you carry a big fan, you can store it in the compartment at the back and in the center, there are less chances that the shape of the brush gets too altered during transport. The brushes will still get altered during transport as they are inside a pouch, there is no miracle solution here, but it does help quite a lot.

The amount of brushes that you can store inside will depend on the size of the brushes, the handles and how tight you want or don’t want them to be.

I can carry 20-22 full size brushes with quite thick handles, it depends on the size of the handles that you are planning to store inside.

This is also the kind of pouch that I love to carry when I go visit my friend and we have plans to play with brushes. I leave one side just for her, only with brushes I want her to try or that I will try on her, and the other side is where I will have the brushes I will use on myself, so my and her brushes won’t touch.

For a trip to Japan, I will carry one Soft Brush Book empty so that I can store my Fude purchases and safely bring them home.

If you are a Fude lover who loves to carry quite a few brushes with you, this is such a fun companion. The idea behind this case was to make a personal companion, it’s not necessarily a solution for PRO artists, however, if that fits the amount of brushes that you would carry, then absolutely! Since you have the two separate sides you can imagine two sets for two different clients, one stored on each side of the book.
