Tomorrow, the Face One and Soft Cheek will be available again. I wanted to talk to you about these two brushes before their restock and share why it took so long. Thank you for being so incredibly patient! This post is destined to those of you who were waiting for them!
I will answer the questions I saw in the comments and also anticipate other questions that may important to answer before these two brushes are back online.

If you are a Japanese handmade brush (Fude) lover, you are certainly already aware of the price increase that has been happening in the recent months or years. This increase is mainly due to the availability of materials -or lack of them to be precise. Demand for them grows but manufacturers only work with their accredited providers who have very limited stocks. If you are new to Fude, then you may not have noticed this price increase just yet.
While the cost for those materials increases, the quality is also unfortunately decreasing. This is a normal consequence of the years passing by so there is nothing they could physically or technically improve to maintain the exact same grade across the same fibers.
This obviously had a direct impact on my own brushes- At the moment, it is impacting the brushes with the longest bristles only bundled with saikoho goat bristles. There is no more availability of saikoho bristles long enough to allow a restock of those bigger brushes. Face One and Soft Cheek are impacted, so the choices here were:
- Discontinue the brushes
- Change the grade of the bristles to a lower quality
- Try to reproduce the impacted brushes with a different manufacturer who still had some stock of saikoho goat bristles in their catalog.
And here is a little more about each option…
“Discontinue the brushes”
I am very attached to these brushes, to their shape and to how they perform so I am not ready to discontinue them- as long as there is interest for them.
“Change the grade of the bristles to a lower quality“
We tried to make them with sokoho which is the next quality down the line but I was not happy. Then we tried with a mix of sokoho and synthetic. Unfortunately the two options changed the shape of the brush, how it splayed for example, and also the functionality. It wasn’t only a problem with the softness which was not the same anymore, but also the functionality of the brush as it was not fitting the purpose that it had initially been designed for.
We could have changed the specs (shape/density) of these brushes so that -even bundled with sokoho or synthetic- they would still achieve the same functionality but they would be two completely different brushes and they would not even perform in the exact same manner.
“Try to reproduce the impacted brushes with a different manufacturer who still had some stock of saikoho goat bristles.“
I thought it was worth trying… I decided to work with someone else that I trust and who is able to take over the manufacturing of these two brushes. I am lucky enough to know personally a lot of manufacturers across Japan and this helps a lot when facing such challenges.

This batch of the Face One and Soft Cheek was handmade in Japan by a renowned manufacturer that I know well. I have followed their work for many years and they are not new to the Fude world. They are not located in Kumano, hence you won’t see the Kumano sticker in these brushes but as you may know, not all the Fude manufacturers are located in Kumano.
Bottom line
I really wanted to work with someone who was extremely happy and eager to make these two brushes for us, someone that I know you all love.
I can tell you that it was not easy at all. Taking over the work that someone else has done, something artistic, it’s not just a question of creating a mould, or assembling the pieces together, it’s reinterpreting what someone else has done with his or her soul and this has been very challenging. It’s much easier to create new brushes from scratch than to take over something existing to the letter.
I really hope it will be ok and that we can continue working with them. By the way, I can tell you that these craftspeople have also made some prototypes of new brushes (upon my request) and they are incredible, hopefully we can release these in the near future.
It was a joy to work with them and to get to know them even better, I feel insanely lucky and privileged. I know that I almost drove them crazy but they were patient, determined and here we are today!
The batches that we will receive of Face One and Soft Cheek are small. This is intentional so that we can see how it goes.
Thank you to all of you for your continuous interest and for encouraging the Japanese artisans with your love for Fude!
Questions ?
I am going to continue this post in question/answer mode, I would like to address specific questions that I saw on Instagram. If you have any other question that I did not answer, I will be extremely happy to answer if I can. Please do not hesitate to leave your feedback or question below in the comment section.
Are these brushes [Face One and Soft Cheek] different from the previous releases?

Just like before, the brushes are both bundled with saikoho bristles, they have the same specs (density, length, etc).

However, when it comes to handmade brushes, all the batches differ, even if you work with only one manufacturer! Natural bristles change from batch to batch and the artisans who make them also change or sometimes they can just be in a different mindset, every element has an influence, this is not a machine made item. With these new brushes, the dye process for example is also different, the techniques are different, the bundling, the finishing, etc. Handmade brushes always slightly differ from each other and they will even more when they are done by different manufactures.
In terms of functionality, the brushes cover the exact same purpose, density and strength feels similar. Softness can differ. When playing with them, I mixed them on purpose, without looking at them, I could not always distinguish the new from the old. Sometimes the new version felt softer, sometimes the old version felt softer. In terms of application and results, they are equivalent.
Is there a way I can differentiate the old from the new version?
Yes, there are several ways to differentiate them:
- The new versions come in a different packaging and they do not have the Kumano sticker, this doesn’t mean they are inferior, but the manufacturer is not based geographically in Kumano, although he does work with Kumano. The production cost is even higher but we decided to keep the same sales price for as long as we can.
- The new versions have a diamond symbol next to the word JAPAN on the handle. I wanted to be able to identify the new versions in case someone feels that they are different from the old batches. They are certainly not fake. The diamond means these are existing Sonia G brushes made by a different manufacturer.

When will they be available ?
They should be available next Tuesday, the 26th of January 2021, but I will update you on Instagram during the day to confirm date and time as I am not 100% sure at this precise moment.
Will you completely change your manufacturer for all the brushes?
No I won’t as long as they can produce them and that all is well.
I can share with you that I do have several projects assigned to different manufacturers, not only in terms of business continuity but I would like to bring to you very special projects and each manufacturer has their very own special skills that suit some projects better than others. I want to bring you the best of each. Hopefully I’ll stay here long enough to show you what is coming and it is amazing.
I hope you will love these brushes, after having tried all the many versions and possibilities, I can guarantee that this is the closest we could get to the original Face One and Soft Cheek!
Thank you for your support, as I always say, I could not be here without you! I am forever grateful.
Love you all!

Hi there! Thanks for such an honest and detailed insight into the production of your brushes. It’s really a breath of fresh air to have a creator be so honest with their products – just shows the the honor you put into your work.
I’m still a little confused on what the differences between the face one brush and the smooth buffer brush is? Would you mind elaborating a bit? It looks like in your other post – the main diff is just the brush handle. Is your inochige brush affected by the shortage too? Thank you 😉
Hi Sarah, Thank you so much! It’s very important for me and I appreciate that others can see it this way too.
Of course I can! The Smooth Buffer is just a smaller version of the Face One, it will buff in smaller areas as the diameter is smaller by approx 1cm. If for example you want to powder, buff next to the nose, the chin, the jawline, the contours of the face but you want to avoid the cheek area, a smaller buffer can be more handy than a bigger one. But, if you want to buff quick and easy all the face, the Face One is going to be faster. I actually use both brushes all the time. The small one I even use it with blush because my favorite blushes are quite sheer and pair well with it and then I can apply them with enough precision. I use the Face One with setting powders or with subtle highlighting / finishing powders – or even without any product but just to absorb the excess oils on the face.
In terms of proportions/density, they are the same brushes just in different sizes.
Many would prefer the small one because it allows them to work with more precision. Others would rather go for the big one as it’s just faster.
I wanted this Smooth Buffer because most small buffers are too dense for me and also, it was good timing because it has shorter bristles so it could still be manufactured, while the Face One could not.
Yes, Inochige, Master Face, Face Pro are also affected.
I hope this helps! <3

I just missed the Face One. I waited over 10 months. Do you know when you restock it. I was looking every day on your Instagram and Beautylish did not notice me.
Thank you so much! You’ve been so transparent throughout this process. Can’t wait for all the wonderful things you introduce us to in the future.
Thank you Judith, very much appreciated! I hope you are well, sending you lots of love!
I am beyond excited for the return of the Face One, I won’t be able to tell the difference (if there is any) as I don’t have the first release of this brush. I have my alarm set to pick one up tomorrow and I absolutely can not wait. I have the Soft Cheek already and she is still going strong. I adore everything you create and can’t wait to experience this delicious brush! Thank you for all that you do.

Hi Louise!! So happy to read you, how are you sweetie? I hope all is ok and that you are feeling well. The brushes truly are made with all my heart, sounds cheesy though but it matters a lot to me 😀
I send you lots of love, lots of strength and please stay safe!! Your daughter is so kind!!! thank you to her!!!
Thank you so much for the breakdown of the new items! I’m super excited to try the new Face One!! I love my current one and I greatly appreciate the diamond to show the difference! Also, thank you for being so diligent in the crafting of these beloved brushes!! I can’t wait to see what new pieces you’ll be launching!!
Hi Ashley, thank you so much!! we did the best that was possible so I hope all will go well and that you will love this Face One!! I am very exciting for what is to come, that’s for sure, thank you for all your encouraging comments and continuous support, it helps a lot specially in these times! <3 Stay safe!
Hi Sonia, if all goes well, will you release more of the Face One? Or will it be harder / take longer for the next batch in the future considering the difficulties you’ve been facing?
Hi Chelsea! yes absolutely, also with time I believe that the artisans will get more familiar with the brush so it might be easier, then with regards to the materials, we cannot guarantee of course but if all goes well, we should be able to continue for a little while.
Just want to say thank you for the transparency. The price of materials and brushes has gone up so much (Some brands have increased the price 2-3 times in the past 6 years or so) so I definitely appreciate you try to keep the brushes the same price as long as you can (totally understand if it inevitably goes up!). Have missed out the earlier release of these two brushes, so will try to grab them this time around! Hope you and your family stay safe and can’t wait for your new projects. 🙂
Hi Tiffany, thank you so much! yes specially if you have been a brush lover for a few years you could see the curve of the price going up and up! I realized also that this is actually for everything handmade, not only brushes as there aren’t as many artisans. I am so happy that there is such a loving and understanding community. I am also looking forward to the future projects, quite different ones so it’s kind of a brand new chapter which I am really happy to start. I hope you and your family are well too and please stay safe! 🙂
Sonia, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your openness. Your detailed explanation should allay anyone’s fears about a change in quality. I have no such fears as I trust you implicitly. I have said it before but your willingness to share information is refreshing. I hope I can purchase the Face One brush when it becomes available & then I will only need the Base One & Face Pro to complete my collection (that is until your new releases become available )
Hi Debra! thank you!! we honestly did the best we could, it was certainly not easy at all but worth trying! Base one is planned for March so hopefully soon!! Crossing fingers! Face Pro I don’t know yet.
I am very happy that I can share more information so you can all take a decision knowing the changes and the reasons behind those. 🙂
I hope this will be a good year! I hope you are well and I wish you a wonderful 2021!
Thanks for the update and for all your hard work! I wanted to express interest in the Face Pro brush. However long it takes, I NEED more of this brush. I learned years ago to stock up on brushes that work really well for me. Unfortunately, I only purchased one to try and it has been sold out since. On a positive note, I was able to buy 3 Face One brushes over time, so I feel set with that one!
I purchased the brush holder and the new Soft Cheek! I appreciate that you kept the brush price the same even though it was more expensive to manufacture. I thought I should pick up the Soft Cheek while the longer Saikoho hair was still readily available!
” The batches that we will receive of Face One and Soft Cheek are small. This is intentional so that we can see how it goes.”
It sound like you are unsure of the quality or something else, could you explain further? Maybe I missinterpreted that scentence?
I order the face on as soon as it poped up on Beautylish so Im very excited to see what the fuss is all about. However I didn’t recieve a notification, thank god I set the alarm, they were sold out after 2-3 hours
Hi Karolina, of course I can. There are several reasons and I can do my best to explain.
When starting a project that involves a new manufacturer and new processes or materials, there are more precautions to keep in mind (versus an usual repeated order). Not only because times at the moment are more challenging than usual, but the brushes cost a lot to produce and the margin is small, it does not allow for any buffer, whether that buffer would be to occasionally allow discounts or to comfortably replace an entire batch that could go wrong. The manufacturer is not going to take back any stock or returned items, they usually never do.
Working in more controlled small batches mainly allows everyone involved to see how everything goes from start to finish (development – production – sales – feedback), it helps a lot to envision the future. Then batches can increase as time goes by.
The very first orders are always smaller, whether it’s a new product or involving a new manufacturer.
I have absolutely no problem in recommending this manufacturer with any new designs because they are extremely talented and kind, but taking over something that someone else had mastered, something that people is already accustomed to, specially when materials are decreasing in quality and increasing in cost, it’s a HUGE challenge and I sincerely don’t know how these brushes will be welcomed. Hopefully all goes well, I am known for being very cautious and taking lots of precautions, sometimes too much 🙂
I don’t know if this answered your question, I am very so grateful for the trust that everyone has in me and I just want to make sure I do my best to guarantee the best products and meet your expectations!
Thank you for purchasing it! I hope you will love it!! please do let me know, I would very much appreciate it! I wish you a wonderful day!
Hi again Sonia!
Thank you, beautifully answerd
I just got the brush, it took forever since I live in Sweden but it was worth the wait!
The face one is amazing! I havn’t used it properly yet, just a quick application of a finishing powder but the quality is great!
I was a bit worried but there was no reason to be, I only have the mini cheek, mini booster and crease 3 so far and this one is far superior in feel, so much softer, it’s simly amazing! I think it’s safe to say you can continue working with the new supplier
Can’t wait for the face pro and master face to return, any idea when they will be back in stock?
Kind regards, Karolina
Hi Karolina, Thank you so much for your kind feedback!
I am really happy that you are enjoying the brush, so nice to hear!
I don’t know when these brushes will return because there are several parts included and the actual situation is not helping either, just making things a bit slower.
I am working on it at the moment, as soon as I have an update I will let you know!
Thank you again so much for taking time to stop by and give us all your feedback, very precious !
I wish you a wonderful day! stay safe and talk soon! 🙂
Hi Sonia!
I’ve collected quite a few brushes from you just over a span of 1 year! I truly love them. And I understand how each brush, batch differ from one another. Hence, sadly I have a couple of brushes that are scratchy and I’d like to salvage them. Is there a way?
Hi Sonia
Thanks a lot for detailed post. when can we expect to have Face Pro back in stock.
I love using my brushes.
So excited for future products
Hi Sonia
Face One is a magnificent brush. It’s simple, practical and does its job perfectly: blending powders … excellent. I use it 3-4 times a week and it’s just like when I bought it, a little more flexible and fluffier, which is better for blending and buffing.
My sincere congratulations on this wonderful creation. I would like to buy another one because I use it a lot .. do you have an approximate date to replace it?
Did the Face One ever actually restock? I’ve been waiting on this brush for well over a year and was never notified by Beautylish. I’m so disappointed. Will it come back again this year?
Hi Kristina, yes it did come back, not sure why or what happened but it will come back for sure! I will inform you as soon as I have a date! thank you so much for your patience, very very much appreciate that you are still here! sorry it takes so long! Sending you love <3
I am in the same boat, I have been waiting on the Face One as well as the Inochige. Do you have any news on when either one might restock? My first brush of yours was t he Small Buffer Brush and fell in love with it. I wanted the larger one but I never could get my hands on it so I took the small one instead . I live it so much I still get the larger one. I’ve also been waiting to see if you were going to redo the Base One? Do you have any news on that and are you still moving forward with the changes on that brush now you changed manufacturers? As always love you and your products! Love reading your blogs. I must have missed the last restock by minutes because it was gone before I had a chance. Thanks fir your time and have a wonderful day!
