Friend Brush Post – Revealing Tesla [MidniteDesire]

by Sonia G.

Every blogger has his own personal reasons and motivations to blog, my initial and only motivationย isย “you” who are reading this right now and who made this little blog evolve and live day after day.

The most amazingย consequence of blogging is who you meet along the way, the “community” that you bring together. When you start such an adventure you can triggerย joyful insanity and make everyone elseย feel much less lonely in theirย own little universe. If you are familiar with the “SMuT” Forum then, you already know what I mean.

Sharing this serious and absolutelyย reasonable interest for brushes doesn’t only go one way, I learn a lot from you and I have so much fun reading your comments that I believe I am now officially desperately addicted to our interaction…

But… I am still crazyย busy with the brushroom renovation so I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you toย some of our dedicated SMuT members, they will reveal to usย their most beloved brushes, their preferences and their profile so that it helps you too.

Today I would like to introduce you to the gorgeous and brave Tesla who has the difficult task of going first ๐Ÿ˜€ ย Tesla and I both live in Switzerland and although we haven’t met in person yet, we chatย a lot behind the SMuT scenes. I leave you now in her company and thank you for reading, commenting, asking her anything you want! ๐Ÿ˜€

A huge thank you to Jeanette for the wonderful guest post idea and a huge thank you to Teslaย for this post and for being such anย amazing friend! <3

*TESLA – MidniteDesire*

Hello there gorgeous! First off I would like to say a HUGE thank you to Sonia! Really, Iโ€™m super excited to be doing my first ever guest post for our beautiful SMUT – president and her fabulous blog, you know that feeling you get when your words get all mixed up, sentence comes out all jumbled and nothing you write sounds nice or good enough, so please go easy on me, this would normally be out of my comfort zone. ๐Ÿ˜€

Oh heck, I forgot to introduce myself, guess I should introduce myself, right? Iโ€™m Tesla (MidniteDesire) from Smutville(http://forum.sweetmakeuptemptations.com/index.php) ,I think we all know that Smutville is known to be a very dangerous place and potentially fatal for brush addicts lol and I’m addicted to beautiful things, particularly for makeup brushes… NO way to avoid it.

TL001

Okay, let’s start with take a minute to get to know a little bit about my beauty profile , this might help you out to make a decision.

Age: I was born in 1980

SKIN

Skin Type: Combination – Normal or slightly dry on cheeks (time of year, climate, age, etc.)
Skin Tone: Medium-Tan/ NC30-40( about NC35-37 at the moment) , I do use self tanners from time to time
Skin Undertone: Warm
Skin Concerns: Fine lines ,dark spots and occasional breakouts

SKINCARE ROUTINE

I truly believe that my skin has benefitted from regular facials exfoliation ,using a product with at least SPF 30 and a proper nights sleep help to keep skin soft and healthy

So basically, as long as I can cleanse, tone , moisturise , gently exfoliate and getting enough rest ,my skin is happy

HAIR

Hair Type: Not straight and not quite wavy
Hair Texture: Medium
Hair Color: I’m naturally a brunette but my current hair color is honey chocolate
Hair Concerns: Dry and frizzy *crying*

EYES

I’d say I have brown-hazel eyes because a lot of times they look brown but if my eyes are in some lights or makeup they appear more honey with a hint of green in them. I have thin, medium length eyelashes and I’m short sighted, I do wear glasses or contacts, I should wear them all the time but I don’t

MAKEUP

I do wear makeup almost everyday, personally I think that wearing even a little bit of makeup to *work* makes you look more awake, polished and professional, otherwise it looks like you just drag your butt out of bed in the morning, seems lazy, disrespectful and not a sexy one. well, I also find that I touch my face way to much when I’m not wearing makeup ๐Ÿ™‚

FAVORITE COSMETIC BRANDS

I’m all over the place hmm….Burberry, Dior, Suqqu, Chanel, Charlotte Tilbury, Ellis Faas, Guerlain, Chantecaille, Giorgio Armani, Mac, Tom Ford, D&G , Yves Saint Laurent, just to name a few. Ooh oh and I have just ventured down the rabbit hole of Gucci, once I get it will see how it turns out! lol

FAVORITE SKINCARE BRANDS

Kanebo, Lancรดme, Dermalogica, Kiehl’s, Chanel, Laura Mercier, Origins, Caudalie, Rodial, Liz Earle

Since I’ve already admitted to having an addiction to beauty products and brushes, while I’m at it I might as well mention my current foundation routine and you know, this is not going to be like to determine a specific skin tone or specific skin concerns or something like that but I just wanted to share my own personal preference, my experience with some products and I’ll also show you some of the brushes that I use

So let’s get this party started ย right before I’m going to bore you guys to death and truth be told, there’s a lot of blend, blend, blend, blend and blend again! Anyways, I’m just going to stick to a basic routine and leaving out my typical skincare products and lip balm which is prior to the foundation mainly because it’s depending on your skin’s needs, skin type and your personal preferences and while thereโ€™s no right or wrong way to apply foundation: fingers, sponge or brush, each method has its pros and cons, so this generally depends on your personal preferences and what makes you most comfortable, personally I like to use brushes and sometimes clean fingers but if I need a full coverage or for a night time look, I sometimes use a damp Beautyblender when applying foundation (In my opinion, makeup sponges should be cleaned after every use, but if I’m in a hurry to get things done, that being said sponge was never my first choice )

Well recently I have switched my routine a bit, so here are six of my autumn must-haves right now:

TL002

  • Laura Mercier Foundation Primer SPF 30 : Besides making my foundation application easier, it felt more like a moisturizer than a primer, I’ve tried a few Laura Mercier primers but so far I like this formula best!
  • Ellis Faas Skin Veil (S104): I bought this because of the rave reviews and it is certainly well credited, I’m actually about to finish my second bottle. I would say it offers light to medium coverage, it really looks like my skin but better and gives a luminous glow when applied.
  • Nars Sheer Glow (Stromboli , Barcelona): It’s definitely one of the great foundations that I’ve tried, the formula of this foundation is awesome. The color range really is great and I was surprised that it didn’t irritate my skin in the slightest
  • Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk (No. 6.5): I’ve been using this foundation for several years now, I like the way this foundation makes my skin look, the coverage is medium but I’m sure you could build it up to a more full coverage
  • Chanel Correcteur Perfection Long Lasting Concealer (30 Beige Petale) : This is my favorite concealer to use under my eyes. It’s very creamy, it doesn’t settle into fine lines, doesn’t dry out the eye area and has good longevity.
  • Mac Studio Finish Spf 35 Concealer (NC 35) : It gives good coverage and easily conceals my marks and blemishes but I prefer to use a liquid concealer under the eyes, this product is thick making it rather difficult to blend and make fine lines and wrinkles look worse
TL003-01

Flat Paddle Foundation brushes

ย

ย

TL003-02

Foundation brushes

Personally I don’t use this type of brush for apply foundation with them but I love them for blend and buff everything together. Strange but true, I have found I can use less foundation when I apply it with flat foundation brush than my fingers or dip these brushes straight into the foundation

TL004

BeautyBlender Sponge

ย

TL005

Concealer Brushes (Medium And Large)

ย

TL006

Concealer Brushes (Small)

First, I’m going to start by applying primer, I apply and blend primer with my fingers. and what I like to do is put a little bit of foundations by combine together a small pump of Ellis Faas Skin Veil and shake out a dab of Nars Sheer Glow on the top of the hand, use a flat foundation brush to mix the two foundations together, just starting out with a small amount, if necessary you can add more later. I find it is easy to start applying from the outer side of the cheeks to the other, but that’s just me and I’m comfortable doing it, the chin, the nose and the forehead and work downwards the jaw line and onto the neck ,then itโ€™s serious blending time… I use the white goat hair foundation brush to blend the foundation into my skin, around the edges of my face, around the hairline and down into my neck.

Once my liquid foundation is finished, I generally dab 3 dots of Chanel long lasting concealer under the eye and blend them with one of my large-size/ medium size concealer brush and with leftover product on the brush lightly blend the concealer into my t-zone area. If I have spots, blemishes on my face that I want to cover it, I usually use the Mac studio finish and apply my concealer with my small size concealer brush, then if I don’t wear the cream blush or cream bronzer, I would go ahead and apply powder to set the concealer around my eyes and using a powder brush ,tap that brush or swirl around to pick up the powder, then gently tap the brush into my face.

TL007

Hakuhodo G5554, G5557, G544, J544, MAC 187, Rae Morris #23, Koyudo Fu-pa 03, Rae Morris #21, Koyudo Purin FPr001,Koyudo Fu-pa 01,Koyudo Fu-pa 14, Chikuhodo Z-1, Koyudo Hairisu, Koyudo Macaron, Koyudo Kumamon

I also use my Hakuhodo G5554 and Rae Morris #23 ones as my cream-blush brush and it is by far my favorite brushes I own.

BUT IF I don’t feel like putting on a full face and went for a minimal look, I usually wear:

  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm
  • Tinted moisturiser (I tend to switch between a stippling brush and my fingers with this) or a powder foundation (I usually apply it with Z-1 ,Koyudo Fu-pa , Kabuki )
  • A quick sweep of one neutral eyeshadow or paint pot
  • Mascara (curl my lashes beforehand) then maybe blush and lip gloss or lip stain.

And that’s it, they might sound a bit long but when I do this it takes me like only 5-10 minutes to get ready

And lastly my favorite eye and face brush picks, uuuugh…why would you ask me such a difficult question, Sonia? well, after a great deal of thoughtful deliberation, I think you were right about this and the list could be helpful to some of you guys, even though this changes from time to time but still some of these brushes are really my all-time favorites ๐Ÿ™‚

For now though, my little piece of paradise, I just got the Lam Sam Yick 901 not too long ago but it quickly became one of my TOP favorite powder brushes, the gold ferrule, the red handle, maki-e and the salt and pepper hair practically begged me to buy it. So I did. it’s just AAAA-mazing! And I think this baby go perfectly with my Koyudo and the red-gold little ones. This brush really spoke to me, is this becoming something that I should be worried about? makeup brush is speaking to me???

Bahaha… as long as I don’t talk back, maybe I’m safe. ๐Ÿ˜€

Have a wonderful day all you adorable people and thanks again, Sonia!

Yay, Tesla. Awesome post and thanks for paving the way for other guest posts. I love all your brushes and think you’ve selected the best out of your large collection. The 901 is fast becoming one of my favorite powder brushes too, it is so lush, soft, silky and a huge mass of hair! I got it in black because my CES set will be here soon and I didn’t want that many of the same red handles and the black matches my Koyudo Makie goat hair ones. I had to laugh when I saw you use the Georgio Armani Luminous Skin foundation because it was my first foundation I ever bought over 7 years ago and I’m just now at the end of it, only 2-3 days worth left, that thing lasted forever without oxidizing or going off. I will repurchase for sure. I use 6.5 as well. So now I’m going to re-read your post and drool over the brushes again.

Reply
midnitedesire 22 September, 2014 - 9:49 am

Thank you,Gladys! Well let’s just say I seem to reach for them more than Z-1 ,as it’s more densely packed and has a shorter bristles so I really only reach it for powder foundation but it’s seriously one of my holy grail for that ๐Ÿ™‚

Reply
midnitedesire 22 September, 2014 - 12:13 pm

Thank you! ๐Ÿ™‚ Fu-pa 03 is a good option, hun! especially if you don’t mind using a brush that made of synthetic fibers. I like to use the brush to apply my ‘powder foundation’ I use it to press the powder into my skin, the movement will be similar to using powder puff ,the end result is very similar with Koyudo Hairisu Koyudo Macaron regardless of the brush used.
The synthetic fiber is the most similar to the shiseido foundation brush but quite a lot bigger but I DON”T use it for apply the liquid foundation tho. really,I have to use a lottttttttttttttttt of soap bubbles and several washes to get it clean,it was tough.

about hair care products , I used to use ‘toni and guy’ shampoo+conditioner for dry hair and s-factor papaya leavein moisture spray but a couple of months back I found ‘masterline professional beauty products’ – shampoo crystal shine, nourishing mask ,nourishing spray conditioner’ I found that my hair got more volume and a little less dry so I use this and its quite a good deal ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope you can find it in europe ,I got mine at Bennet ,a supermarket chain in Italy but I don’t think this particular line is available in here in Switzerland sadly ๐Ÿ™

Hi Tesla,
I am looking at all these brushes and drooling like a crazy dog ๐Ÿ˜€
On the flat paddle brushes I am interested in the one at the very left, always wanted to get it but then others won โ€ฆ no budget for everything โ€ฆ I also wanted to use that Chiku one for cream contour so I know one day it will be mine bahahaha
I see in your second pic that you went crazy on the round flat ones ๐Ÿ˜€ I am loving them to blend and finish and remove all the excess oil and foundation โ€ฆ so big big love for them! I am not even talking about the Radiance such a wonderful finishing brush, it changed my life, went from a clumsy handling of the Radiance to a zorro-style handling with that one, such a fast efficient brush!!
The eyebrushes you have are so good itโ€™s insane! I see you donโ€™t have any synthetic brushesโ€ฆ have you try them or are they just something you donโ€™t like to use at all? Do you use cream shadows ? if yes, what brushes do you use from your collection ? the weasel ones ?
The Chikuhodo SV cheek is so tempting, I could not see it in person, is it soft like the Z-4 ? or is it a blend ?
I cannot believe you managed to get the LE red with CES hair !! so jealous LOOOL
The Chikuhodo P-8 looks like a huge thing, do you really use it ?
We have to plan something for when I finish the brush room so that you can come here (but youโ€™ll d the trip with some of your babies so that I can pat them tooโ€ฆ) ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

Hahaha I was talking to my friend the other day,we’ve never been to Geneva, can you believe it? the furthest west we’ve been is Lausanne LOLLLL , one day I shall hopefully I’ll get a chance to visit you, you never know but I’m sure we’ll have A LOT of fun

I sure do use the cream eyeshadow ,paint pot, illusion d’ombre and stuff ….eyeshadow is my other major weakness *cough* *cough*, I’ve tried some of synthetic brushes for them over the years (Mac 242,252,195 Smashbox 5, for example ) and they are generally “ok -good” but not great you know what I’m saying lol I find it works better for me with a mix of synthetic and natural hair/ natural hair. My personal favorites are ; Takeda #12 ,Shu #12, Addiction B, Three L, Koyudo BP027, Hakuhodo G539M, J220 and the tamage brushes .

For the brushes, the flat paddle one you mentioned Chikuhodo Special G-12 ,not sure if its the same as the one in GSN series but if I recall correctly it’s made of kolinsky hair instead of weasel, and as for SV cheek one I think it’s a mix of squirrel and goat hairs I’m not sure tho b/c it’s softer than any mix of squirrel and goat brushes i own but not so soft as the z , it’s very directional due to its shape and fantastic for diffusing color. ๐Ÿ˜€ I’ve read/heard about some who have kiwami ( Ann and buggsie ??) saids, the Kiwami giant is somewhat similar to P-8 so if you have been lemming for it, YAYYYY for money saved, you don’t need it! DON”T,Sonia! wahahaha I do like to use powder to set my foundation so I reach for it not daily but quite a lot

Dears, i just feel like introducing myself since i see this blog as a family meeting ๐Ÿ™‚ I found Sonias blog by accident and have been reading for long now. It is great to see how much knowledge and love to make up brushes you all have. I feel less weird now since none of my friends are into make up love really lol. I live in Shanghai but I am originally from Barcelona, lived in Taiwan before so I am curious to see the LamSamYick brushes are originally from Taiwan. I wonder what is so special about 901 brush? To be honest, i am so reluctant to buy anything China based. My experience is you cannot really trust it will not be a fake (sorry for my Chinese friends, i love China but i dont like that from China) so i always end up buying Japanese brushes. I am learning A LOT from all your posts and comments so a big THANKS for that. My collection is not too big, but been interested in make up since many years ago. I wonder how you could compare the K001 to the Suqqu face brush? and would anybody have a suggestion for an undereye concealer brush? i feel none of my brushes can replace my beautyblender for that task. Also, i feel my Suqqu cheek brush is great but not as great as its crazy hype. What do you guys think? Maybe i got a bad batch…Anyway, nice to meet you dears and please keep writing so i can keep learning from you all. By the way, loving this collection of brushes! xxx

Hi Silvia, if I ever go to Shanghai I will call you ๐Ÿ˜€
LSY is a bit different, they are friends with Koyudo, some are made by Koyudo in Japan!
The K001 and the Suqqu ? the K001 is blue squirrel/horse so it would be more rough than the suqqu definitely.
Regarding undereye concealer I love the Marc Jacobs (and actually bought a second one…).
How would you describe what you dont like about the Suqqu? that would help me recommend you something else ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Sonia, thanks for taking the time to reply. I know life can get hectic. You are welcome any time in Shanghai, but be warned China is expensive for shopping due to import duties so make the trip for Chinese culture and amazing Chinese food instead. Totally worth it! ohh well…I will have to add the LSY to my wishlist. Its not that I dislike my Suqqu cheek but it bothers me that it loses the shape so easily, its so delicate I rarely use it. I’m currently looking for a super soft white goat dupe for my Chikuhodo RC2. I love that shape: small and round and dense but not too stiff. I favor round white goat blush brushes.I have the chiku T-4 but i’m looking for even softer goat hair. Does Tanseido have a similar white goat hair to the RC2? I love my Tanseido EQ28 hair, its dreamland! Im also in the quest for a dupe of Chiku G16, love the shape. Any ideas? Im disappointed with the hair softness of my GSN 4, too rough for my redness prone skin. I also wonder for those of you who have the TF Shade&Illuminate, which brush do you use to apply the contour? I use my finger to apply and blend with Houkodou BZ1 but I find it spreads the colour too much and its too soft for blending well around the hairline…isn’t it awesome how pairing the right brush with the right product formula can become such a challenge?!

I hope I go there for work actually, this year it was so close but then it did not happen ๐Ÿ™
Question for you.. have you seen my post about the Koyomo ?? I think these are meant for you ๐Ÿ™‚ For TF shade and illuminate I use the small Wayne Goss foundation and then blend if required with the foundation brush….
it is very important to pair the right brush with the right product, a brush can be a fail or a holy grail depending exactly on that, that’s why I keep many brushes even if I don’t love them that much at first, one day I discover something new that matches with that brush and I feel satisfied ๐Ÿ˜€

Sure Shanghai for work that’s usually the trend hahaha get a connecting trip via HKG or ICN for the shopping hahaha I don’t have any Koyomos but they are calling my name. Yes, I have read your post, more than once lol the thing is I don’t love the handles, too short for my liking and I wonder if going for the saikoho hair brush is really needed or the pink pearl set hair is soft enough (Tanseido EQ28 soft I mean). Its hard to make a decision so they are on stand by hahaha I discovered the Koyudo BP014 to be very useful for the shade & illuminate. My WG first brushes 11 & 13 are on the way to SHA. Cant wait and I will add your suggestion into my wishlist! You are welcome any time in SHA dear, just let me know and we can rave about brushes with a Spanish dinner XD
