KOYUDO – Red Lacquered CES blush brush

by Sonia G.

Koyudo recently released a brush that was (for a very short period of time!) available on theΒ CDJapan website. It was sold out in a few hours and many of you could not get it, I heard they will release some in the future so if you want to have updates, you have to create an account and register to receive their newsletter.

I received mine today, it has been washed, dried, used and photographed for you, and let me tell you that I-LOVE-IT !

can7

I wanted to share these pics with you, to compare this one with the cheek brush from the Koyudo Echizen set.

It comes in a wooden box to protect it and give it a very traditional look…

can9

with the cutest wrapping.

can11

The bristles are protected with a plastic cover -that I removed so fast that I probably could enter the guinness book of records πŸ˜€

can10

A focus on the handle:

can2

The back of the handle…

can3

The head shape is perfection, the density, everything is breathtaking.

can1

It is more splayed out than the cheek brush from the Echizen set, this brush is more versatile, less firm, less directional, exactly 100% spot on, I wish they keep the same shape in the future brushes they will release, this is simply a must-have, absolutely freaking-out of this world amazing.

can4

It looks fuller because the bristles splay out a bit more, which makes it even easier to use. It is the same softness but since it’s less firm, it just gives the impression it is more gentle on the skin.

can6

I prefer the round shape of the handle if I had to choose, I’d rather have round handles… Β it looks like it’s less prone to being damaged, it is shorter than the other one but feels heavier, not sure about this because my kitchen scale has no batteries so I can’t tell for sure πŸ˜›

can5

It is the same handle as a brush I bought at the Koyudo premises last year, the bigger one has a number behind (LSY901), when I asked them they weren’t manufacturing them at the time but if you are interested I can ask again, with so many of you interested in their more unique creations, they may take the time and resources to create them if we push them a little πŸ™‚ Β the big one is a mix of squirrel and rabbit bristles that gives it a bit more thickness and power. The big powder brush is a very expensive brush though but the shape is so fantastic that I could not leave it there… so thick, fluffy, dense and gorgeous!

can8

If you are interested in the cheek brush, I think you should register to be notified when it will be available again, it costed 12000 JPY but totally worth the splurge. They might change the handle and keep this head shape but we have to give them the time to work on it and see what they can do πŸ™‚

Thank you, Sonia, for the review as it answers questions I would have had.

I am so envious that you girls were lucky enough to get the 14 or so of these LE that were released. I really prefer the round handle, and love short brushes, so Sonia, if you have an opportunity, please ask/beg Koyudo to make more of them! I would buy in a heartbeat and I am sure there are many other brush lovers like me that would.

Thanks for your excellent pics & super speedy review, Sonia πŸ™‚
Such a beautiful brush, but sooooo sad that only 14 were produced. I can’t imagine that Koyudo would want to leave so many potential customers unhappy though & I’m sure that they’ll be producing more………just like they did with the limited Red Squirrel cheek brush! Perhaps the new ones will even have the Koyudo stamp on them.

Hey Kiki,
you can order these brushes direct from this Iamsam store. They ship internationally at no extra cost.

I’ve asked them for more info on the hair type & the manufacturer. Still waiting/ hoping for an answer.

Haha…..very ‘standard’ answer.
I took a risk and ordered the 901B & 903B last night & already had shipping confirmation, in good english, from Marcella this morning. I wrote back to her with all my questions, but no reply yet. You know how they all like to keep the manufacturer secret – even when it is so obvious that they come from the same stable. Most peculiar.
Anyway, should I get an answer, I will post it here.

Sweet Make-Up Temptations 29 May, 2014 - 3:13 pm

The ferrules don’t look exactly the same in the way they are assembled but I may be wrong, it’s difficult to see…
very curious… many japanese companies have some kind of “foot” in China but nothing is always crystal clear, difficult to understand the relationship if they don’t want to share.

Reply
Buggsiebee 29 May, 2014 - 3:17 pm

I agree. I am also curious about the ferrule. This is what I asked her:-

Hi Marcella,

thank you for the confirmation.
I was not certain whether the international shipping was going to work as there is no additional shipping fee added.

These Makie brushes look very much like brushes which I have from Koyudo.
Are these made by the Koyudo manufacture in Japan or are they made in Taiwan by Koyudo, or how shall I understand the similarity??
I am part of a brush collecting group & I am sure that they will also be interested in the brushes you offer, however they will want more information on the hair used.
There is only size information provided, but at the price level of these brushes, one wants to know about the hair also.
Also of interest is whether the ferrule is pressed flat or if the brush head is round. Do you know what I mean?

Could you tell me about the hair used for the cheek 901 & 903 brushes?

Sorry about all the questions.

Bonnie 29 May, 2014 - 5:00 pm

Hey all!! I went and took a look at the Chinese reviews so I’ll try and give a brief rundown on what I found on the LSY brushes πŸ™‚

Hair for 901 and 902 are all grey squirrel with something I couldn’t quite translate, but which Gladys kindly supplies is… cat hair!? 903 appears to be all grey squirrel.

Not sure about manufacturer itself, but I will attempt to revert…

Bonnie 29 May, 2014 - 5:03 pm

OK!!! With Gladys prompting, and when she mentioned cat hair… I thought of TAMAGE! Double referenced to check the characters from Hakuhodo for their tamage brushes and it corresponds.

So in response to hair type, 901 and 902 are grey squirrel mix with slender tamage, whereas 903 is grey squirrel!

Hope that helps πŸ™‚ The tamage mix is VERY interesting! Please let us know how it goes!

Bonnie 29 May, 2014 - 5:07 pm

904/905/906 eyeshadow: rabbit hair

212kiki 29 May, 2014 - 5:20 pm

Hi girls yes I was so close to order too and there are hair information but I couldn’t find a good translation so squirrel and what ?
Melissa also asked them after I send her the link and we were wondering if evtl lsy produce some of these brushes on their own because also Sonia’s brush says LSY. they produce calligraphy brushes…
To the ferrule yes saw that too but in Sonia’s visit pics the ferrules also looked like on the website from Lsy…

Evtl koyudo can answer about the relationship between them or they don’t want to answer who knows…

212kiki 29 May, 2014 - 5:34 pm

I mean that pic where also the cheek brush is shown. Looks like the ferrule is glued “over” the handle… Which is not like that on the brush Sonia has…
http://sweetmakeuptemptations.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/koyudo13.jpg

212kiki 29 May, 2014 - 5:51 pm

I clicked on the Chinese versions of the site there you have a bit more infos…
But the translation pages are not really good so I’m not sure if it says more than squirrel…
When they don’t answer evtl Gladys or Bonnie can find out more ??

212kiki 29 May, 2014 - 5:56 pm

Haha thanks Bonnie !!

Bonnie 29 May, 2014 - 6:36 pm

Already on it πŸ˜›

212kiki 29 May, 2014 - 6:44 pm

Sorry but I don’t understand what kind of animal Tamage is ??
Hakuhodo and Mizuho are showing black/brown hair and normally short but what is the white hair in these LSY brushes I thought it’s not squirrel but since 903 is only squirrel it’s white squirrel then…

212kiki 29 May, 2014 - 6:53 pm

Is it a normal cat ? And they don’t want to call it that ?
Ok ok enough I’ll go back to my sewing machine….

midnitedesire 29 May, 2014 - 9:32 pm

Lol, no kidding!! Please let us know how you get on with them once they arrive. I’m really tempted πŸ™‚
Regard of of manufacturer, I totally agree! perhaps they aren’t allowed to give out that info. ??? I guess we’ll probably never know for sure

Bonnie and Gladys,Thanks so much for the info!!!! You guys are so amazing πŸ™‚

Sarah, I think i read somewhere (Koyudo/Hakuhodo but I’m not sure which) ,Tamage sometimes called CAT or “Ball hair” LOLLLLL

midnitedesire 29 May, 2014 - 9:42 pm

Well, Koyudo called(translated ) ball hair. I’m pretty sure of that! hehehe

212kiki 29 May, 2014 - 10:12 pm

@tesla
Haha yes i dont say what google pics showed me when i tried to search for the characters from “Tamage” !!
And yes now when you write it i remember a funny little discussion about that in the Forum πŸ˜›

I think i will order too but evtl i should wait till buggsie has hers πŸ˜€

Good luck, I was told that there would be only 15 or so available, but it isn’t selling out as quickly as the first time, thank goodness. Note that the handle is different, but the brush head is supposed to be the same. Good luck.

For anyone who is wondering abt the “Tamage hair” a.k.a “ball hair” ( dont let yr imagination running wild now :)…. Anyway, Haku explained to me that Tamage hair doesnt grow very long, therefore the hair is only suitable for eyeshadow brushes and not for blush or powder brushes. So I dont think the LSY face brushes have the Tamage hair in them because its not long enough. maybe racoon or tail of the racoon?!

I came accross a “white squirrel” brush one time at Rakuten! Dont think there ate white squirrels out there right?! Will try to find the link again!

Reply
212kiki 30 May, 2014 - 12:42 am

Yes thats what i was thinking, its too short when the Info from hakuhodo is right. But when its cat it could be a different one???
But what is the white part in the brushes when 903 is only squirrel…
I remember the white squirrel hair brush you mean but i think it was more grey with white tips…
I know there are real white squirrels (Leucism and albinism) but I think they are rare and not for brushes πŸ˜‰

The brushes look for me like nice little skunk tails LOL

Questions about questions…

Reply
Sweet Make-Up Temptations 3 June, 2014 - 8:30 pm

yep skunk haha, but it’s rabbit, it’s super fluffy and soft but I’ll see what other info we can get πŸ™‚

Reply
Buggsiebee 30 May, 2014 - 7:46 pm

I have also read that tamage/ cat hair is only used for eyeshadow brushes, but who knows?!. Some cats have loooooong hair!! On every translation site I’ve used I have recieved a different result. Quite a few of the translations mentioned Chinchilla. Anyhow, the brush is on its way now & Marcella replied to say that it both the 903 & 901 are squirrel, so we shall see. I hope that I will be pleasantly surprised, rather than disappointed.

Sorry, I haven’t been here following the latest discussion.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, ηŽ‰ζ―› INVOLVES cat hair (tamage). And I would even say, the general usage of the word ηŽ‰ζ―› do equals to cat hair:

https://www.artbrush-hiroshima.com/animal/index.php#.U4mMvigVda0

http://www.minase.co.jp/syouhin/hude/genmou/3_neko.htm

Cat hair is often used in calligraphy brush, another website says:

“The goat’s hair brushes are white-haired brushes made from the hair of sheep, goats, cats or even deer. They are very absorbent and supple, and produce rounded forms and saturated fleshy brushstrokes.

This calligraphy brush is particularly suitable for the hidden brush tip technique, which requires many subtle bending movements of the brush tip.”

The above is just a sharing for fun. Let’s see if LSY will give a reply.

Here comes an official answer rather quickly, the company says the brush is made of squirrel hair and RABBIT HAIR, that is, in Japanese writing, it is ε…ŽοΌˆγ†γ•γŽοΌ‰ζ―› (usagi). <– Yes, it is Sailormoon's Other Name

I think of the very rare and special Koyudo face brush Sonia shared in a pic from her last Japan trip, made of rabbit hair as well.

I am asking further question regarding her hair naming idea now.

Rabbit sounds more probable than cat – espeiclly as their eyeshadow brushes are rabbit hair.
Has anyone here used/ seen a rabbit hair brush before?

Reply
Sweet Make-Up Temptations 3 June, 2014 - 10:23 pm

In comparison to a similar made 100% squirrel brush, there is similar feeling of density, but with a more lightweight application, a less pronounced feeling of mass of hair and directional application. With this one LSY901 you get a more diffused application but the brush still feels thick.. It’s like the in between rabbit bristles that do not go to full length of the head, add the density and control leaving some space for the other bristles to work without delivering a too heavy application. I tried to explain the difference I notice… hope it helps πŸ™‚

Japanese English
1. ζ―› (noun) fur (noun)
2. ζ―› (noun) hair (noun)

Japanese English
1. ηŽ‰ (noun) ball (noun)
2. ηŽ‰ (noun) coin (noun)
3. ηŽ‰ (noun) egg (noun)
4. ηŽ‰ (noun) jewel (noun)
5. ηŽ‰ (noun) king (noun)
6. ηŽ‰ (noun) pearl (noun)
7. ηŽ‰ (noun) precious stone (noun)
8. ηŽ‰ (noun) sphere (noun)
9. ηŽ‰ (noun) staple (noun)
10. ηŽ‰ (noun) bead (noun)

Thanks Gladys. I separated the symbols & when I look at all the options, it appears to translate to most precious/ best hair or fur.
When I combine the symbols I get the word ‘pilling’ which reminds one perhaps of cats & their fur balls?
I don’t know. I’m just not convinced that a brush with a head of 50 mm long hair can be from a cat.
For a calligraphy brush, yes, for this particular brush, no.

I don’t really know, I guess this can even be an adjective for marketing purpose. People can toy with the word jade (ηŽ‰) as well.

I look forward to seeing the company’s further reply. As some of you may have already decided to buy it regardless of this description, our discussion brings no pressure but great fun.

Koyudo red squirrel is softer, but I prefer the efficiency and thickness of the canadian so I’ll pick Canadian… πŸ™‚
