I recently placed an order with Serge Lutens, I received my parcel with the Blush #2 and the Teint si Fin in shade B40 refils. How can you not love the quote :
Choosing to be yourself is not without its perils.
Thank you for taking the risk with us.
Is it a risk ? Serge Lutens are statement products, often very bold therefore I admit that in a way, it’s a risk for me specially when I am wearing their “Mise à Mort” lipstick, feeling a bit out of my comfort zone with that one but enjoying every minute of it.
The Blusher #2 is a peach that has some pink in it, the finish is near matte but not quite, you can see tiny micro sparkles going on in the sunlight and a very very subtle glow, a bit velvety looking.
I am NW20-25, this blush shows well on my skintone, it is sheer so you may be tempted to build it a few times, just be very careful, although it’s sheer I often manage to apply too much of it, that is due to the bad lighting where I apply my makeup at the moment. I like to use a goat brush to buff it but don’t get me wrong, you can use a squirrel brush or the softest brush you own to apply it, the texture is powdery-velvety, very easily “pick-able” with any type of brush but with sheerer blushes I simply use goat brushes for a more blended and polished finish.
These blushes come in compacts or refills. I buy the refills because they are cheaper and then I store them in a Unii palette.
You get 8 grams of product for 80$ just for the refill, with also the compact you would pay the insane price of 160$ ! It’s already very expensive getting only the refill so there is no way I will buy the compact!
The texture is very unique, I haven’t found another blush with the same texture although I have some similar colors in my collection :
The Nars Sex Appeal is so powdery and chalky in comparison, it’s very sheer and although it still shows on my skin it has absolutely no lasting power at all.
The By Terry feels also powdery in comparison, it’s a darker peach shade with less pink.
The Bobby Brown is a wonderful blush for a nude look, it has more brown in it I’d say but it’s not powdery and has a natural shiny finish. A no-brainer that I enjoy using on a regular basis with stronger eye looks.
The Armani #2 is the closest option to the SL #2, the Armani has slightly more pink in it and a more glowy finish, both have the tiny micro sparkles but again both very subtle. If I really want to be difficult, the SL is more gentle with my fine lines and doesn’t emphasize them as much but the Armani is still amazing, I use it and enjoy it a lot. The Armani costs approx 44$ and contains 6g, if you really want to compare quantity vs price, for the same quantity you’ll pay nearly 20$ more if you pick the SL.
This is quite a heavy application but otherwise it was not showing on the pictures, just to prove that although it’s sheer you can still “over apply” it 😀
Sorry to show you my terrible facial hair 😀 it will be gone after my Japan trip but in the meantime I have to live with it 🙁
This is the Armani #2, you’ll see that the glow is more intense and the color slightly more pink but despite the tiny little sparkles, both are totally wearable for an office look :
I was waiting for a good day to take a pic but I am afraid every day is a tough day so I’ll have to deal with it. Very excited to go to Japan so I can barely sleep, when I sleep I do it like a baby but recently my brain is just all over the place 😀
Bottom line
Paying 80$ is of course insanely expensive for a blush, way too much if you consider that this is the price just for the refill, but if you are into high quality luxury items this is a must-have. I could live without it though, having RMK blushes, the Armani #2 plus the Bobby Brown are a bit more fun if you prefer to have great quality items but with more choice for the price.

I was hesitating since I don’t usually wear dark lipsticks but I just couldn’t resist and part of it due to its name… I also got the Mise à Mort lipstick.
You asked me recently in the comments how the texture compared between the Serge Lutens and similar options but it depends on the shades you chose, I found both Votre Sienne and Mise à Mort to be a bit different in terms of pigmentation and moisture they provide, the Mise à Mort being better.
Compared to the Guerlain Rouge Automatique here, the Mise à Mort is much more opaque, more pigmented, more moisturizing. This SL lipstick formula is just insane although in my opinion it doesn’t justify the high price tag. The Lancome Rouge in Love are very pigmented too, long-lasting but they are not as comfortable as the SL, I wouldn’t call the SL moisturizing lipsticks but in terms of comfort, they excel. Some dark and long-lasting lipstick formulas are just better than others even within the same line.
The SL Votre Sienne is very close to the Sue Devitt Phinda, the SD is a bit more brown and the SL a bit more brick but if you loved the SL shade and want to save a bit, you have at least a similar option. Of course the SL has more impact and shine and is more unique but this time the SD is more long-lasting. I think it’s more in the fading that they differ, the SD turns more into a rose-brown hue and the SL stays more true to its original color while fading.
Will I repurchase the SL lipsticks ? Yes I would if they had less risky shades 🙂

So pretty!!! Hmmmm you have sparked a little blush envy in someone who doesn’t particularly pay much attention to them Sonia lol. I think the Armani will suit my skintone better and I know just the place to get it (Sephora) which is on my way home from work. 😛 😛
oh did I ?? 😛 And the lasting power of the Armani and the BB are really good too ! In a way I am happy not to live near a Sephora !!! it would be a disaster 😀
halleluja 160usd for a blush with compact ? Is the compact made of gold to worth half the price ? I would pay the 80usd because I’m always looking for new blushes but i think i will pass on these 🙁 i’m very light but i need BAM colors 😀
For example my friend really likes the armani ones and told me the texture is great and i should buy one but its the same, too nude for my clowny blustaste 😛
I wonder why this compact is so expensive, it’s not like you can call or do magic with it, luxury has a too high price sometimes 🙁
You can still look like a clown with this SL believe me 😀 what are your favorite BAM blushes btw ?
Sure i’m something around NW5-10 so most of colors can look BAM on me 😀 evtl. i should try one of these “nude” colors 😉
Ohh favorites thats hard, i love all my babies 😀 the most BAM colors (pigmentation) i have are Nars Crazed, MAC Devil, TF Narcissist, MAC Merrily, MAC Bright Fuchsia… but i have to say that i dont use them often because i need a very light hand for these 😀
But now i have squirrel brushes so its better to handle these ones 😀 merrily is a really beautiful color and since i have chiku Z4 or koyudo red squirrel i’ve used it more often 😀
They are really in your face these ones 🙂
Despite using sheer blushes on a more regular basis I also enjoy very strong ones, we just need a lot of control but the result is worth it and often more long-lasting -which I love !
My eyes went straight to the RMK blush — you depotted it! I have a penchant for depotting myself, but that blush is so portable in its original packaging. Any specific reason you removed the casing?
Oh man. I’m *so* off topic. My apologies!
😀 I did but I will put it back in its original case. I was just using these products together for more than a week (the RMK more for highlight or to add on top of others) so everything was in the same palette.
That was just temporary. The great thing about the RMK Mix, is their portability, amazing ! they take so little space for so much impact !
I CANNOT look like a clown with this SL blush! I have tried packing it on for more color but my skin seems to just eat it up. I always add a light pop of another brighter color ( Nars ‘boys don’t cry ‘ for example ) on the apples of my cheeks when I use this blush because otherwise I can’t see much of it all all. What I DO get from the SL II though, is an amazing glow without any visible sparkles.
As I really enjoy the texture of my SL Teint si Fin, I decided to take a risk and order the darkest shade in D10 to use as a bronzer. BINGO & PHEW !! It works like a charm with my skin tone & has become my daily bronzer. I had been using the Shiseido bronzer in medium ( #2 ) & this is a bit more red based and deeper. The texture is super fine & blends like a dream. Lucky purchase 🙂
If I look in the artificial light I can barely see it, then I go outside, look at the mirror and BOUM ! 😀 a big difference depending on the lighting, I do place it with a very dense brush and buff but surprisingly it shows really really well on me!
I need to try this Nars blush, it looks stunning !
I also want to try a Teint si fin shade for neutral bronzer or contour, the texture will be fantastic. The TF Terra is quickly going to pan borderline so I will consider the same as you in the future 🙂
I am loving this blush! Nothing earth shattering about the color but again the quality of the powder can not be matched. I don’t think I would appreciate that aspect as much if I had not tried so many many many other lines. Subtle differences with the SL that I appreciate in my “older” age ;p. Would I like more colors? Yes and no…for my wallet!
YES I say YES
Your mention of By Terry broadens my vision. As odd as it seems, It is an exhausting task for me often to check if any Europe brand I am interested is cheaper in US (same for Guerlain, still studying). I heard of good comments about GA’s foundation and blush too, I really want to say “long time no see” to your photo as people talk less of the good brand now. (Especially under the current Tom Ford summer collection rave)
Thanks again for your effort paid in between your tight schedule, the SL lipstick texture check is really useful. I am quite disappointed for Guerlain automatque’s performance, I think I will check out the Guerlain Rouge G lipstick (Cle de peau is too expensive, the new suqqu is too opaque)
I think every woman should own several dark lipstick for their own pleasure! I took the risk to own 2 true red and 1 magenta red one, even my mum says,”um…too dramatic, don’t wear them when you go out”, I actually love them! I bought the Estee Lauder Pure Vivid Color Shine #gunmetal to make my red lipstick more wearable, or in case I bought a wrong shade. Also, a MAC MA did a red lipstick look on me using a true red lip liner and magenta lipstick, so much fun!
Another insane and sidetracking question here (my common sense is really bad in kitchen):
For microwave heating, if I don’t want to use plastic (BPA concerned) and not interested in glass, can I use the Stoneware line from Le Creuset (bowls or mugs)?
Have you tried the new Suqqu already ?
The problem is that SL lippies are so stunning that Guerlain looks less good in comparison, but they are not bad at all and the price is so much better !
I also layer sheer /white glosses on top of strong lipsticks, otherwise it can be shocking sometimes. Very provocative so your mum is being protective with you 🙂 sweet
For the microwave question, http://cookware.lecreuset.com/cookware/product_Syrup-Jar_10151_-1_20002_10352_
I believe it says you can 🙂
No, I didn’t, but the swatch of Erica is really too opaque and thick to my liking (I prefer opaque coverage, less settling in lip lines and glossier finish) , I would buy only if I can see more pictures from other reviews.
Do you know some of the Suqqu items finally have their Japan price tags cheaper than their UK price tags? Better go for this Japanese Yen advantage in your coming trip! E.g. sunscreens and some skincare items
Well, I think my mum is beautiful enough to pull off the “challenging” colors or looks she dislike. I would eventually find her a good foundation in the future.
Oh, I did check the warning labels, but for personal preference or your country norms, do people around you prefer glass or anything else?
Lisa Eldridge once showed a trick on how to wear a dramatic colour while toning it a bit down. Blot and wear a thin layer of a nudish lipstick on top. Then you have the colour, only less bright.
Luckily, SL is way too expensive (and otherwise, unobtainable) for me so I’m just perusing these posts with more-than-avid interest… from afar haha!
I’m in a red lipstick phase, so I think both the SL lippies are stunning! In particular, I was drawn to the olive-y flash of the Mise a Mort, but that’s just the lighting! But I’m still looking for the perfect formula that does not make my very, very dry and chapped lips peel within half an hour 🙁 Or maybe a better lip balm/treatment before I invest in the SL haha
As for the blush, I just want to run my fingers across them :S in terms of shades, they don’t really appeal to me but if it’s formula… *that* is a game-changer.
Thanks for the review again 🙂
you are welcome Bonnie !
With the dark SL lippies I don’t experience any problems when I have dry lips, which is extraordinary !
Did you try the Chantecaille contour fill ?
Haha yesterday i couldnt leave Berlin without the Serge lutens Blush 02 its very light but yes the texture is awesome !!
Now I’m looking for a nice cheap “compact” 😀
glad you love it 😉 the compact is so expensive, they are crazy nuts !!!
I have been dying for the Pourpre Maure shade of the SL lipsticks, but when you’re unemployed for a while, even cheap lipsticks are out of the budget, much less these! I scored one of the lipstick samplers on eBay that should be coming soon, so I’m very excited about that.
I was wondering if you found any lipstick cases that work with the SL refills? For when I am able to invest, I’d love to save the money!

Argh no I haven’t, I have tried Hourglass but it doesn’t work 🙁 so far no luck…. I just use them like that, without the case … until I have an accident 😛
Well, if I figure anything out, I’ll let you know! 😉
Hello Sonia,
Thanks for your review and all the things I learnt about brushes! Do you think that the Serge Lutens blush #1 would work to contour, with a soft cheek brush? I have fair skin, but I love so much Serge Lutens products (well, I own eye shadow #1 and a few lipsticks) that I wish it could work …. I cannot try it in person so I hope you can help me on this one. I know blush #2 would work great as a blush, but I am wondering about the #1 as contouring powder … What are your thoughts? Thank you very much.
Anne
I too am curious if Blush 1 would be good, not particularly for countourung (SL released a Blush Duo, review this!) but for warming up the face/bronzing. I embrace my pale skin, but something to blend into the temples and hairline to create a more seamless foundation finish would be great, and I adore SL.
