RMK is one of my top favorites brands, specially when it comes to blushes. I am really surprised that these blushes aren’t more often reviewed and raved on the blogosphere. When I wanted to expand my collection I couldn’t find enough information or swatches online then saw a mission for me here… so I have gathered a few products and today I will show them to you, believe me, it’s not a sacrifice to spend my money on RMK, whatever the product the chances it doesn’t work for me are so minimal that I absolutely don’t mind taking the risk.
RMK was launched in 1997 by Rumiko, a Japanese professional makeup artist, I just wish her brand was more easily available. Thanks to Rouge Deluxe I got the info that Rumiko is actually going to leave her place to a new Creative Director in 2013. I just sincerely hope that RMK’s phylosophy will remain exactly the same.
Unlike other brands, RMK manages to create vibrant and bold colors and make them wearable on a daily basis, I mean “easily” wearable, no need to blend for hours and to need to be a scientist to pick the right amount of product. RMK claims that their makeup will make you feel “happier, sexier and fresher”, it’s exactly what I want and what it does to me, I like to wear discrete makeup for work but discrete and subtle does not mean flat. I love when natural comes with some kind of twist, therefore, most of my RMK products made it into my Holy Grail sanctuary…
This is my little collection, some items are Limited Edition but most of these are available. I have to label them because the packaging is similar, you can imagine how much time I save in the morning:
Let’s start with the blushes.
They have several options :
- RMK Airy Matte Cheeks (New)
- RMK Creamy Sheer Powder Cheeks
- RMK Ingenious Powder Cheeks (Matte or Pearl)
- RMK Ingenious Jelly Cheeks
- RMK Sheer Powder Cheeks
- RMK Mix Colors for Cheeks
I won’t be able to show you all of them since I don’t own the Jelly or the Airy today, but I’ll show you the other ones I own. First let me just tell you that RMK scored in all categories : texture, finish, longevity, I have never found a blush that has this high quality. On top of that, they are appropriate for anyone, it will depend on the shade but so far all of these look amazing on my skintone (neutral, NW20 for reference). If I really had to, I could throw away all my other blushes and keep only these RMK, but we all know this won’t happen…
The Ingenious Powder cheeks Matte
MT-03 Strawberry pink : you can watch a video of Lisa Eldridge applying it and also acess here a picture of the blush on an RMK model.
There is a lot of glow in the MT-03, but it’s divine, I don’t see a matte blush here but anyway I don’t like matte blushes without any glow at all, powder looks terrible on my skin. The more you build it the more it will be opaque but it will never look powdery or heavy, just very very strong and dramatic if you take it to the extreme, but just like the other RMK blushes, they are buildable from the sheerest glow to the most stunning opaque perfection.
MT-04 Rose Pink
Same qualities repeated here, matte with a glow, not as intense as the MT-03 but not entirely matte either.
I am afraid I don’t know which one is the Shiseido, tomorrow I will take the pan with me to the shop and will check it out.
MT-05 Peach
Slightly more matte here but not entirely, just the right balance. If you look at the swatches, at the bottom of the picture you can see powder residue on some products (Burberry, D&G), that will just not happen with RMK.
MT-08 Natural Brown
I remember Ernesto (working at the RMK counter in Selfridges) telling me “you know this is a shading blush”, me “yes” (…and GIVE IT TO ME NOW… 😀 ). It was out of stock … so I had to calm down and order it.
The Kevyn Aucoin will deliver a more natural shadow for sculpting but my skin prefers a more pinkish contouring, I have to be very careful with the KA otherwise it will look muddy, I don’t have that problem with the RMK.
The Ingenious Powder cheeks Pearl
P-09 Holographic Soft Coral
This range is more complex, they have some holographic effect to them therefore they will be more obvious on the skin, I use them as highlighters on top of bronzers for example or on their own. They look stunning in spring and summer.
When you look at the Shu blush, it also appears interesting and it is beautiful, but then when applied, RMK really keeps it’s holographic effect and the Shu looses a bit of its complexity.
P-10 Holographic Coral Pink
This will rock your night, gorgeous but obvious, not tacky-obvious but if you want a statement shade that’s a great one to go for and if you love coral pinks you’ll be in heaven. It’s so creamy and silky, better than the Shu or any other one.
P-11 Holographic Shiny Pink
When I received it, I didn’t think I would love it. It looks a bit too neutral in the pan but this looks so insanely sexy, the sparkles are not that visible on the cheeks (although some will be there but will fade away). One of my favorite looks is to pair this blush with Cle de Peau T5 lipstick and the Benefit “sexiest nudes ever” palette. The little sparkles on the lipstick “bring back” the sparkles on the blush in an elegant and sexy way, the whole look is very flattering, a bit on the daring side for a day at the office but fantastic for a casual day or even an evening out.
The Sheer powder cheeks
02 Coral Orange
I have just receive these two sheer powder cheeks, I could not try them yet, since I am still a bit sick, wearing this on my pale sick skin could be a bit scary to look at right now. When I’ll feel better, I’ll update this post with my personal experience.
EX-03 Rosy Brown
Same as above, I will try it and will let you know. It’s very sparkly so I probably won’t be able to use it for the office hours…
The Mix Colors for Cheeks
Now we enter a whole new dimension for a blush. It can just not get any better than that. You can either pick one or two shades or swirl them together, whatever the combination it will be gorgeous. They have a shine, a glow more than a shine. The powder is very finely milled and is very easy to apply and blend, delivers an application that lasts all day on my skin. They don’t come with a brush but they have a mirror inside.
They take very little place in your beauty bag but have the most stunning impact, this is what I call enhancing your complexion, worth every penny.
I have a Givenchy blush that has the same idea behind, a mixed glow with several options, but the RMK are more unique and flattering.
The RMK 15th Anniversary palette is meant to be used swirling your brush across all the colors, this process will pick just the right amount of each shade onto your brush.
The Creamy Sheer powder blush is more creamy than powder, the yellow pan is very soft shimmer, the coral is stunning.
For the eyes…
I don’t have many products, I am not crazy about them unlike the blushes. These are the only ones that really tempted me.
The Mix colors for eyes in 08 Beige is really subtle, I need to add some lining there to define my eyes a bit more but for an office day it’s very elegant and fresh.
The Mix colors for eyes in 09 Gold Brown, I am just loving the dark shade there, did you already bought a palette for one shade ? I did.
The Ingenious Waterproof pencil has great lasting power, I prefer the Addiction Rabbit Hole but at least I can switch between the two.
The RMK single eyeshadow BR-01 has a nice texture, not powdery and blends well. I wanted to get more but they are a bit on the expensive side…
RMK Dusty Bright Eyes 03
It’s a little cream pot with a sparkly pan that swings open underneath, sparkly but more opaque than the TF.
I often wear Mac Blackground for a smokey eye, I refuse to stop despite my old age 😀 There is a smokey eye for everyone I believe. The RMK has nice lasting power and does not crease but I wear a base and set it with either the sparkly pan or a different eyeshadow.
For the lips…
I don’t have many products. The one I enjoy the most is the RMK lip crayon in 01 Pink. I love it so much, it’s fresh, makes my face look so much more alive. The lasting power is not that excellent and it doesn’t look like there is much product in these lip crayons, I will get to the end of it, and I will repurchase over and over again.
I add some comparison swatches here. I swatched the RMK 01 Gold Pink twice so that you see the gold is really in the center but it’s very subtle.
The Dior 240 is a bit more coral, I am in my second tube but it’s very expensive here, what I like about the Dior and the RMK is that they have some color but look a bit like a balm, easier to wear than a true lipstick. The RMK doesn’t dry my lips but I have to exfoliate them because wearing these bright pink-peachy shades do enhance the flaws.
Just wanted to add a picture of their two mascara wands.
I prefer the RMK Extra Deep W, delivers a fuller appearance of my lashes. The Separate Curl adds visible length but BOTH keep the curl ALL DAY LONG, I insist, all day long, amazing.
For the RMK Extra Deep W, you have to apply the mascara, then the fibers, then the mascara again. Does it make a difference ? yes it does and it’s worth it.
When I visit Selfridges UK, I always see Ernesto and we always have a chat, he is very helpful, always happy and friendly, he recognizes me every single time I go there maybe because when I go, I spend a long time playing with RMK products. He doesn’t know about the blog and he must think I am crazy 😉 I think he is just shocked about the quantity of RMK items I buy at their counter 😀 “here’s the crazy one again...”
I just don’t understand why there isn’t more passion around these blushes, they deserve all our attention.
I couldn’t cover all the aspects but if you have any questions, do let me know !

Ahhhh RMK! You are so right Sonia, I read surprisingly little about these amazing blushes. I have quite a few and thought I was all done but how on earth did I miss P-11 and Mt-08! Thank you for showing me my gaps! I will take care of it right away 🙂
Feel better!!!!
xoxo
Thanks Stacy…
I have many gaps too… just not enough money to fill them in 😀
Stacy, you live in the US, don’t you? Where do you purchase the RMK?
Hey Carlyn! I am in the US… I get most of my RMK and Suqqu from Ichibankao. If you haven’t ordered from them their service is fantastic! I use EMS delivery option ($7.50) and get my order in usually less than a week. With the yen as it is right now a Suqqu palette is $89! That is way better than the $120 I have paid in the past! (Let’s not get my husband in on this discussion…) I like that the shipping (excluding the extra for EMS) is included in the price so you don’t have to do a massive order to justify the purchase. Also, I am glad to hear that the Shu brush cleaner is ok but not a necessity. I just placed an order with them (good discount going on) and contemplated the brush cleaner but am glad I skipped. Where are you in the US? Have you told “us”? 😉
No husbands or judging partners here 😀
I ordered a Sonia Rykiel palette from Ichibankao, waiting for it to arrive 😛
Thank goodness for that 😉 Mine is probably scoping out expensive guitars somewhere! Ok share!! What Sonia Rykiel???? Loving the low yen exchange!
😀 😀 😀 Speaking about guitars… my bf sent his for renovation… it has been a year and a half and still no sign of the guitar !!
oh I ordered this one : Sonia Rykiel Quatre Eyeshadow Collection Color: 09
Buggsie loves it and I saw it featured so many times in Drivelaboutfrivol that I couldn’t take it anymore 😀
Ooooooooo I love that 09!!!!!! Hmmmm..
You should tell the BF to treat himself to another Guitar to tide himself over untill his baby is back 😉 I could give him my husbands wish list 😉 thank goodness he has more restraint than I do! Those Guitars can be quite pricey!!!!
great ! they would have a common interest to share while we speak about brushes 😀
Unrelated… By the way how are you liking your other Astalift products? I ordered and am using the night cream and I LOVE it
due to the La Mer episode I could not try new products for a while, next week I might test them!
@Stacy, sorry to butt in.. While I love the Astalift Jelly, and it does gives a healthy complexion, I cannot use it. 🙁 It sorta gives me the itch.. how strange but that’s true. My face starts itching some 5-10min after I put them on. I stopped applying them the next few days and it was alright but soon as I tried them again the itch is back.. so.. no go for me.. 🙁
On another note, I have been exploring a new Japanese brand: Cosme Decorte. Been trying their Liposome serum and their famous AQ Loose Powder which is soooooo finely milled and hydrating! The SA gave me the serum as a GWP which is a nice 15ml bottle. So far so good.. 🙂
@Sonia, have you tried the Astalift foundation yet? How’s it?
Hi CC,
When I think of all the food intolerances I have (the tests are done on blood samples), I can imagine that every one and each of us is so different and will react completely differently to skincare 🙁
I tried it once but it didn’t work, at first the result was very healthy looking, then after 1 hour it got flaky and patchy on my skin (but you know how weird my skin reacts right ?) I had to remove everything and I was at work so not very good…
I have just recovered from my tests with the La mer, next week I will be on holiday AT HOME 😀 I have planned to test other foundations and re-test the Astalift, because sometimes I wonder if the brush wasn’t appropriate or the technique too abrassive…
Anyway next week it’s going to be fun for testing, I might look like a poisonous mushroom at the end of the week but at least I won’t be at work 😀
Hi CC! Perfect example of how skin care is so personal! In a million years I would not have imagined Astalift would cause a reaction like that… what a shame! I am not familiar with Cosme Decorte… will have to do some reading 🙂 I have been seeing some amazing reviews on Kanebo Sensai foundation… very intriguing! I have used the skin care in the past but not the makeup side. Just got the first lipstick and eyeshadow base from them….
Oooh, I was going to try the Cosme Decorte eyeshadows, then felt extremely guilty and withdrew it from my cart… has anyone tried it?
Wow what a giant swatch post 😀 They’re looking really great glad you made this 😀 I def need the P-10 and is the MT-10 a cool pink ? i’m looking for a blush like chanel horizon ( i hate that my horizon have some extreme hard pressed stripes)
I’m really a blushjunkie so i can have 10 blushes with almost the same color.
But after the time the texture is really important for me…. and the package.
I think i dont own a blush with brushes at moment , i sold them after some time 😀 but i think the rmks could be the first to stay with this “withinbrushpacckage”
glad you liked it then 🙂
The P-10 you mean ? no, it’s more coral and warm than the Chanel Horizon, I can send you a swatch comparison tomorrow if you like.
The little brushes are really good, fluffy and not scratchy at all, not as good as the Suqqu that are included in the palettes but extremely good, absolutely usable ! I just lost one but I’ll keep them for sure 🙂
haha yeah it was a mistake i meant the MT-03 in comparison to the horizon but after a second look i think the mt03 is def more cool pink and the horizon more light coral pink…
Yeah the brushes could be great for traveling or so but i like my “full” brushes so for me its waste of package when there is a brush included. I prefer when the blushpan is bigger. But its only my craziness about blush packages and not must when the blush is really great 😀
Whatever thanks for the input of “new” blushes i’ll def try a rmk blush 🙂
yes you are right ! the MT-03 is more cool pink.
I totally see what you mean, I also prefer when blushes come full-size without the brush, specially Chanel or Dior, terrible !
at least RMK and Suqqu are good enough to be used.
you’re welcome 🙂 keep me updated if you do !
haha at the end i ordered P10 😉 sad beautybay dont have that much products from RMK .Its much more cheaper there as on the asian shops…
yes so sad, I wanted to get my hands on more but couldn’t find them 🙁
I love to “feast” on your reviews…very interesting & so much info. Thanks!
you are very welcome Maria 🙂
All I can say is thank god I am not too much into blush lol! 🙂 🙂
better that way then ! not my case 🙁 I think February was the month of the blush…
I really enjoy reading your reviews! Your effort and passion really shine through and I can’t help getting swept into your enthusiasm and will often start looking out for the products that you have reviewed. 🙂
Thanks
Thank you Jolene, that’s so sweet of you !
It’s not because I love something that you should necessarily buy it, always better to try it first 🙂
but I admit I can be a bit too passionate about makeup sometimes, I think I should calm down -but I can’t… 😉
Hello :))
Thank for your sharing. That’s really good reviews!
Is color in MT-08 Natural Brown looks like benefit hoola ?
Love your blog soo muchh
I will check tomorrow in daylight and let you know !
thanks Bambi 😉
Ohh, thank for so much 😀
Hi Bambi,
Sorry I forgot… but today I remember 😀 better late than never right…
here are two pics that may interest you :
http://sweetmakeuptemptations.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/rmkhoola.jpg
http://sweetmakeuptemptations.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/swatchesbronzerssl.jpg
funny because RMK turns more brown pink and the Hoola more brown “green” ugh ??!!!
so weird how the swatches turned out…
of course it’s not green, but compared to the RMK it’s more shiny and will not work as a shadow, more like an all over bronzey glow, unlike the RMK which does work as a shadow…
Oh, thanks for the comparison of these two. I have Hoola which I like, but really want to try the MT-08. I think the only site that has it and also ships to the US is Ichibanko.com, however it does gall me how marked up the prices are.
I know.. so sad we have to pay that much, I prefer not to but at least my last experience with them was smooth…
haha thank you again… sorry for late thank you. 🙂
😀 sometimes I forget some comments because I need to do some checking… you just have to remind me please 🙂
What a wonder post, Sonia!
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on makeup.
And I love your photography!
thank you Sylvia, gosh I wasn’t convinced about the pics but my BF’s mum left these “holy grail” cups at home and I wanted to have some fun 😀 😀
Interesting! Is she into medieval re-enactments or fairs?
Great post again, Sonia ! I don’t own many rmk products : two gel eyeliners and a lippie, I like them very much. It’s pity asos stopped the line, but I will take a look on beautybay for the blushes, especially the MT-08. I’m contouring with an armani blush but it doesn’t last, thus I’m always on the hunt for a good subtle contouring products.
merci 🙂 I haven’t tried the gel eyeliners yet !!
I just received a Suqqu contouring duo today ! will send you pics and swatches too, it’s called 01 Oshagecha, did you try it ?
http://www.frontrowbeauty.com/suqqu-balancing-cheeks-momozoe-mukuge-oshagecha-review-swatches/
I looked on beautybay and there wasn’t a big selection on the blushes. I really want to try the MT-08 as well, but didn’t see it there. Have you seen where else to puchase that ships internationally?
Hi Sonia!
Great post and photography.how do you like the process?do you take any classes or just work hard?
Ahhhh rmk,I have only one blush from rmk,but I’m with you: it is worth the attention.have you tried Paul and joe?take care x
Hi Margaret ! do you mean : do I work hard to take the pictures ?
I think they are terrible, not happy at all, I need to make some progress…
I have just 1 blush from Paul and Joe, which ones are you loving ?
Thanks Sonia for the great post as usual! There really aren’t a lot of RMK posts out there so it’s great that you’re reviewing products that aren’t as …popular? Well-known? Household? Haha!
And I agree with the blushes! I only own the EX-02 Coral Pink but it is fabulous 🙂 Thanks for your recommendation with that too!
Haha I mean:do you injoy the process of taking pictures?(you know my ‘perfect’ English ;)))))))
I haven’t tried Paul and joe yet..but interesting in them;))
oh I see 🙂 yes I enjoy it ! sometimes I want to throw everything through the window, don’t have patience when it comes to learning photography… 🙁
I got a few items from Paul and Joe because I was crazy in love with the “gift with purchase” and it was the only way to get it… need to take a picture and send it to you 🙂
I have just a few items, I love the nice packaging, dont’ find the eyeshadows that great though, maybe I don’t have the better ones, don’t know.
This is the most amazing RMK collection I have seen…and its not ‘little’…Love the pigmentation of RMK products..the blushers are to die for..There is not one Japanese makeup brand that I haven’t liked…lovely collection and loved your blog a lot.
Hi Neeraj,
Sorry I found some comments that did not go through and got stuck in the automatic filter. So sorry 🙁
tonight I did some research and found some lost ones !
I hate when this happens…
thank you ! I am with you, Japanese brands are just stunning ! I have to try more 😉
Hi Sonia,
This comment is long overdue. I’m from the Philippines and Suqqu is just so inaccessible. Both Suqqu ang RMK are unheard of for me until I came across your blog when I was looking for a good Hakuhodo resource. RMK I can easily get from Taiwan and Hong Kong but Suqqu is only available in Japan (which is too expensive for me to visit) and Thailand ( which doesn’t give me much reason to visit considering the number of beaches we have). I can live without Suqqu blushes – that is settled comsidering the choices from RMK and Shu Uemura. You really did a good comparison of these brands. However, would you say that their lipsticks are comparable? I’ve learned from The Raeviwer that Suqqu starts out really smooth and creamy but after a while turns into a matte finish. In this review you said that RMK looks like a balm. Is it the same for all their lip products? I’m looking for a more opaque finish. I wish you can help me stop this craving for Suqqu products, because i’m not yet done with their lipsticks and eyeshadow thanks to you. ;p
Luv luv your RMK reviews….thank you!
Thank you 🙂
Hi Sonia,
I’ve noticed that you have a lot of make-up products. But how about the availability period?
You said that you have a sensitive/dry skin. So I wonder if you just throw them away after this period. Isn’t there a waste of money?
I ask you how you manage this issue because sometimes I want to buy a product but then I think…ok, it’s gonna expire in 12m/16m/24m etc….
Thanks.
the availability is as they say, months or just a few years. It’s very silly to own too many products and yes it is a waste of money.
I often give the foundations or creams away when I can’t use them, others I keep them for comparison purposes. Others I buy them mostly for fun and because it’s a hobby.
I did stop buying things that had a lower lifespan (like mascaras or gel liners) if I don’t use them straight away.
Something that I do when I don’t use them for a while is spray them with alcohol, it evaporates but sanitises the shadows or blushes, same for the lipsticks, I sometimes clean them with alcohol. When I see that something is too old or doesn’t look fresh I just throw it away.
For other products you have to make sure they are very tightly closed and that you close them immediately after usage…
hi , i love your review!i just found out about the brand, so this post is what i was looking for.
i am going to london very soon, so i’ll make sure to go to selfridge and stock up on rmk product.
Hi Christine,
Thank you for the sweet comment! I am not sure how much RMK have reformulated their products, I haven’t even had the opportunity to test the new ones… I heard it was not the same ones now, please let me know what you think of them! I’d love to know 🙂
