Swatching Suqqu…

by Sonia G.

First of all, I apologize for the look of the pictures, not only some palettes are a bit old and ugly but I also haven’t found the best way to take pictures of swatches -yet-, eventually one day I will get better at this, so let’s hope for the best !

After a few years collecting Suqqu palettes, I have managed to gather some of them, 16 eyeshadow palettes and 8 blushers/powders, tightly stored in my little bright green box and duly labelled for the fastest possible morning makeup routine ! Not easy to remember which one was behind each name but today I finally can.

I already mentioned in one of my posts that Suqqu was my comfort makeup : when I don’t know what to wear and when I am in a rush – which is almost every single morning –  it’s easy to take just one Suqqu palette and get ready in a minute, or two… 😀

Wearing Suqqu feels good, so far all the palettes I bought work really well for me, some better than others but I am able to use them on my ageing lids whatever the shades or the finish or the mood…

suqqupalettes

I got most of them at Selfridges Uk, not easy to get them actually. I remember going to Selfridges years ago and continuously hearing “it’s sold out” again and again and again… it took time and a lot of patience (time and money) to get my hands on them.  By the way, if you are contacting Selfridges, not all the palettes they have are mentioned on the website, if you call them they might have more items available in stock (LE, etc..).

Some of these palettes are either discontinued or Limited Edition from past collections, I am showing you all of them because if you have them today you may be able to compare to the others from their current collection.

This is not a review, just sharing some swatches for some of you that might be interested 🙂

Row01

Row2

01 Kakitsubata

Two matte and two shimmery shades, like most of their palettes, great combination and pigmentation.  This palette has been replaced with the Konruri one which is a 5 shades palette instead of 4. There is a very nice review here if you want to know more about it. (Again sorry about the messy  pictures)

kakitsubata

kakitsubata_sw_1

03 Matsukasa

Two matte and two shimmery but really not over the top shimmery, wearable shades that make this a nice and neutral palette. The top left shade is very sheer and the bottom left disappears into my skin.

matsukasa
matsukasa_sw04 Keshizumi

Dip alert. You might not see it here but this is my oldest and the one I reach for the most. I love to do a sultry smokey eye with this palette, keeps it wearable for work and so sexy 😉

keshizumi

keshizumi_sw

05 Sakurakaba

Neutral with a twist, I love the iridescent shadow on the top left but it’s a shame it’s so sheer, on the other hand you will be able to wear an iridescent shade without looking tacky 😛

sakurakaba

sakurakaba_sw

06 Ginbudou

I just got this one very recently so it looks quite new. Although they are sometimes sheer, the combination of all the pans together is never flat. The gold shade is very very sheer but again, sheer and wearable which can be better for some of us that are looking for beautiful shadows slightly more daring but still sophisticated. The top right does not feel as creamy as some other similar Suqqu taupes but it’s still lovely to wear.

ginbudou

ginbudou_sw

07 Komorebi

When I first got this palette I thought that peachy and green shades like these weren’t for me. Everytime I feel like I want to go outside of my comfort zone, I pick a Suqqu green or peach shade and it’s absolutely lovely and wearable !

Such a fresh and beautiful palette !

komorebi

komorebi_sw

08 Mizuaoi

Same as above, out of my comfort zone and yet so wearable. Absolutely freaking gorgeous shades with Suqqu quality.

mizuaoi

mizuaoi_sw

Ex-07 Tsukiakari

The bottom left shade is a cream texture, sorry about the messy appearance… as you see I use it 🙂 it’s a nice blue base for a smokey eye but I prefer the taupe shade in the Konruri so I use this palette in combination with Konruri.

There were 3 palettes in this collection but this Tsukiakari was the one that I preferred and that looked the most pigmented and the most interesting to me.

tsukiakari

tsukiakari_sw

Ex-01 Yukiyo

I think this is an old LE palette, the grey shade is glittery and the bottom right shade is blue based. The taupe is not that spectacular but I love the dark and unique blue shade here.

yukiyo

yukiyo_sw

Ex-08 Hanamari

This is a LE palette from last Christmas I believe, the white is glittery and irisdescent, I don’t really like this green shade but combined with the pink it’s simply gorgeous ! You can see a post here with a picture of a look.

hanamari

hanamari_sw

Ex-09 Momoawayuki

This is (again) an LE palette from last Christmas (or holiday season). The bottom right pan is split into two shades, the far right shade completely disappears (it’s there on the swatch but who could tell… ? 😛 )

It’s not a very unique palette but as always one that I can use on a daily basis.

momoawayuki

momoawayuki_sw

Ex-10 Hikarikonayuki

Same as above, LE from last season. I love this dark brown shade, one of my favorite shades from Suqqu ever, the texture is a dream to work with and these Suqqu shadows are very forgiving with ageing lids.

The lightest shade disappeared on the swatch but yes it’s there 🙂

Unfortunately due to the lights and my moving arm, I could not take pictures only with the studio lights for the swatches (I had to use flash) so they seem different from the pan 🙁

hikarikonayuki

hikarikonayuki_sw

09 Usumoegi

I don’t like yellow and green, here I do. This is an amazing palette if you love this kind of shades, and even if you don’t you may have a chance with it. Very pigmented shades and a gorgeous combination.

usumoegi

usumoegi_sw

10 Kozuecha

Looks very similar to Himesango, the top left shade here looks more *peach with pink in it* and on the Himesango it’s more *pink with peach in it*. The top right pans are totally different shadows, here it’s a taupe-ish kind of  beige and in Himesango a purple toned taupe.

kozuecha

kozuecha_sw

11 Himesango

I need definition for my eyes, the darkest the liner the better, that’s why I prefer this one to Kozuecha.

himesango

himesango_sw

12 Konruri

This is pure love, my favorite Suqqu palette ever, mainly because I love neutral with a twist and here the twist is amazingly beautiful.

konruri

Some blush swatches

There are different categories, Nuancing Cheeks, Gradation Cheeks and Balancing Cheeks.

The Nuancing cheeks are meant to be layered (or not, you choose), the Gradation ones look more like a blush and highlighter combination or you can layer them to give a more glowy finish to the blush, the Balancing cheeks are usually two products in one compact.

I don’t know which blushes are LE but unfortunately most of these are. The Face Color palette at the right of the picture is definitely LE.

blushes

Nuancing Cheeks Ex-01 Botaniro

They are really meant to enhance and deliver a sophisticated finish. They are very easy to wear but as you see they are very light and most of them would not show on darker skintones.

I did not know that bubblegum cheeks could still look so elegant 🙂

On the left of the swatch picture, both shades have been layered.

botaniro_1

botaniro

Nuancing Cheeks Ex-02 Kohakusui

Fun color, I have to layer it in order to look “human” but we can say it’s pretty unique and I love that, it looks actually very unique and interesting on the cheeks.

On the left of the swatch picture, both shades have been layered.

kohakusui_1

Nuancing Cheeks Ex-03 Akanemizu

For excellent swatches of these 3 blushers have a look at this review, amazing clear swatches by DrivelAboutFrivol.

Sorry about the messy blush pan 😛 Some have been slightly injured in the process of fighting with the lights.

akanemizu_1

akanemizu

Gradation Cheeks Ex-01 Mizudaidai

I can barely see it on my skin but I can wear it as a nude blush.

And again excellent swatches from DrivelAboutFrivol here.

mizudaidai_1

mizudaidai

Gradation Cheeks Ex-02 Mizumomo

Something that was really missing in the Suqqu shades, a bright cool pink, stunning bright shade ! We want more bright shades by the way …

mizumomo_1

mizumomo

Balancing Cheeks 03 Hinageshi

The pigmentation is very sheer so I only use it when I want a no makeup look. This is a highlighter and a blush.

hinageshi_1

hinageshi

Cheek and face palette Ex-01

Beautiful warm pink-reddish blush and beautiful highlighter, sometimes I swirl the two left powder pans to set my makeup or concealer but I really don’t use much powder so these little pans will last me a lifetime. More details on this palette here.

I hope that Suqqu releases more of these combined products, great quality with great portability is something that many of us are often looking for.

facecheek_1

facecheek

Suqqu Bright Veil face color Ex-01

You can’t really see the swatches since the powder is very sheer 🙁 I use this powder with a very light hand, it delivers a very beautiful glow if I use it on specific zones but if I use it all over my face it can make me appear a bit too white. Efficient but I need to control myself when I use it.

suqquveil_1

suqquveil

And some of their Creamy Glow lipsticks…

They have also been labelled, not because I can’t see already but the number is really tiny and in the morning I was wasting way too much time looking for the one…

Now problem solved.

suqqulipsticks

Here are some swatches of the ones I own, they have been layered 3x

Number 02 is the brightest and very flattering, the number 01 is the sheerest.

suqqucreamyglowsw

The Ex series are actually very glossy and have less pigmentation :

Unfortunately my swatches will not blow your mind away but if that was helpful anyway, then it was worth it 😉

Awwwwww I so love Suqqu! Since you have gotten me started I have to join you and say it is my go to comfort line! Even 04 Keshizumi that I thought wouldn’t work for me has become my favorite! You can not go wrong with Suqqu…
I adore the lippies as well!! My only question is: where is 4,5,6,7, and 8??

Thank you so much for doing this for me Sonia! You know, I think I quite like Sakurakaba, Keshizumi, Usomoegi, and Kozuecha, and of course, Konruri, from those swatches… Some of those I didn’t think I’d quite like…

Sonia, I don’t know why you are apologizing, these are great photos! I have become a Suqqu convert and in the last 5 months purchased 11 eyeshadow palettes so I have all of yours except for 05, 07, 10, EX01, EX08 and EX09. The only one I have that you don’t is 02 which I like more than 09. While both have green shades, 02 is different and refreshing, more springlike whereas 09 is darker and mysterious. But I admit I use 02 less because there are 3 greens in it so I have to think about what I am going to wear before I put it on. The one that gets the most use is 04 Keshizumi, so utterly dreamy; and 11 Himesango because it goes with anything. 12 is also my favorite blue palette; didn’t really need to get 01 or EX07.

What I love about these palettes is aside from brightening my aging eyes, they do not accentuate upper lid crepiness. Also, they have eliminated raccoon eyes; the shadows do a gorgeous job of softly accenting lower lids and stay in place all day until bedtime. The top left shade is beautiful on the inner 1/3 below the tear duct, and the top right and lower left accentuate the outer 2/3. I use a Hakuhodo G5515 here, so fast, so easy!

Thanks, also for the cheek and lip swatches. I haven’t started on those yet.

Kay, I love the 11 and 12 too! Thank you for the application suggestions!!! Thank you also for sharing the brushes you like to use for a certain application!! 😉
Now get started on those lippies! It is a crime that you don’t have any yet!!!!!!!
Then the blushes must follow…..

Thank you Kay for taking the time to share with us !
When you start it’s difficult to stop, for us who need eyeshadows that are not flat and ageing Suqqu is a total winner !
There is always a base shadow, a shadow that will brighten my eyes and there is always a shadow to frame the eyes, this is what I want in a palette 🙂

Wow, Sonia!!!! The words fail me… Sadly, lemmings aren’t (failing me, lol). I have just added 08 Mizuaoi to my Selfridges order – totally atypical for me and out of my comfort zone, just like EX-08 Hanamari, which is the reason for my order, but I just have to have it!!!

I’m also looking at the lipsticks, and was wondering if there was any particular reason you don’t have any of the Creamy Glow Moist? Do you prefer the original formula? I’m also hesitating between getting 01 and 02, or 02 and 03 (I’m limiting myself to 2!). I favor pinks, not too strong, but my lipstick needs to make my lips look slightly darker than naturally (I strongly dislike nude or lighter than my lips lippies on me). Some of my favorites include TF in Indian Rose and Chantecaille Lip Chic in Camellia (favorite of all times, and repurchased – probably the the first lipstick I have ever finished, lol). What do you think?

As ever, thank you so much for doing this Sonia, even though it’s killing my bank account (but as it’s making me very happy in the process, it’s all good 😉 ) 😀

I understand you, sometimes “we just have to have it” 😀 but with Suqqu I always find a way to use them and love them.
I have just updated the picture, sorry 🙁 the second one (the ex-) are in fact the moist ones I have, the ex-01 is my favorite amongst them but I think it’s LE, it’s going down so fast… 🙁 sad.
Yes I prefer the normal formula, it’s more long lasting and opaque, the Ex- are meant for when I really just want a hint of color and a glossy finish (the ex-01 is the most flattering on my lips), don’t last long but I feel my lips are moisturized for a few hours.
I would recommend you to get either the 1, 2 or 3 if you love pinks! the 2 is a bit strong though so if you really like sheer, then maybe the other two instead. I remember the first day I was wearing the #2, when I arrived at the training building, I looked at the mirror and BOUM it looked so strong in daylight I was shocked, wasn’t used to a strong Suqqu lipstick at all ! I applied too much, today I blend it with my fingers and it looks much better on me. Here Drivelaboutfrivol is wearing it on the lips, on me it looks much stronger.
I have Indian Rose, both the 1 and 3 are more close in intensity to the TF but they are not the same tone, the TF has more a brownish tone to me and the Suqqu 1 and 2 will be brighter and rose-pink. The 2 is much more raspberry red in comparison to the TF.
My account in the coma right now, waiting for a donor 😛 😀 😀

Neo 16 January, 2013 - 5:26 am

Thank you Sonia, that’s very helpful – now I want all 3 :D!!!!!!!!! I’m thinking that 1 and 3 will be very nice for everyday wear, and 2 will be nice for summer when I have a tan and need a bit more color. The problem is, I’m only allowing myself 2 – this is killing me!!!!

It’s so hard, because if I go by Drivelaboutfrivol’s pictures, I wouldn’t get 1, because it looks almost too light. BT then I know that lipsticks look different on different people, and my lips are way more pigmented than hers. And from what you say on how 2 appears on you, I suspect it would all look brighter on me too. And 3 looks lovely on Messy Wands, have you seen it?

http://www.messywands.com/2012/05/suqqu-creamy-glow-lipstick-03-hiyuri.html?m=1

Do you feel that 3 looks similar to this on you?

I’m not getting any closer to making up my mind, am I??? 😀 can someone please make my decision for me??

And you are right, Indian Rose has more of a brown undertone – it’s the “brownest” and most opaque lipstick I have. So I’m glad to know the Suqqus are more pink/rose 🙂

My account is in a stupor at this point, on its way to the coma shortly, and soon joining yours in the line for receiving donations :D! And I haven’t even placed my Koyudo order yet….

I think I will be passing on RMK blushes this time – I just got Wicked today. No matter how stunning Narcissist is, and how much I wanted it to look good on me, I just couldn’t make it work :(. Even the SAs had to admit that it just brought all the redness in my skin out, and that’s not a good look!. Wicked on the the other hand, looks like it was made for me, like I just came in from a cold outside and had a slight flush, simply lovely :). And between that, my RMK Mix Color for Cheeks, my Suqqus, my CdP and my Chantecailles, I kind of feel blush content at this point – so I should probably just leave it at that, LOL

Now back to the Creamy Glow dilemma…. 😀

Reply
Bonnie 16 January, 2013 - 12:43 pm

Wicked!

Good luck with the Creamy Glow 🙂 I’d help out, but like you, I have pigmented lips, lollipop pink-red for my bottom lip and a muted brown-red for my top lol….nude colours tend to wash me out big time, especially with my light tan atm. I love Hiyuri on Messy Wands as well (I contemplated that too)!

Reply
Neo 17 January, 2013 - 2:27 am

Yup Wicked :)!!! Wore it today (along with the EB Soft Smoke Trio), and I’m so glad I went with it! It’s just perfect for me, and one of those blushes I will reach over and over again for, without ever worrying that it’s too much or doesn’t fit or whatever 😀

That’s so funny, about your lips – I’m sure you are the only one who sees it too, lol. Are you getting any creamy glows? 😉

Sweet Make Up Temptations 16 January, 2013 - 11:56 pm

oooh, Messywands is so gorgeous 😮
The 3 looks maybe slightly pinker on me but not much different.
I am waiting for my RMK blushes and I will post on them when I get the other 2, should be soon now.
The contour post is on its way but struggling to get pictures 🙁
I am sooo happy that you love wicked 🙂 yeah !!!
I would say 1 and 3 😛

No worries on the RMK post – I think I’ve decided I’m passing on the RMK blushes, so I almost hope you only post about them (including contouring) only after I finalize my order. But only almost, as I would really really hate to have any regrets of missing out on anything, LOL

Hi..I love your post..and I just want to know your opinion about Tom Ford eyeshadow vs suqqu eyeshadow..I want to buy one eyeshadow palette for my mother, she’s in her 50 now,and just have one dior eyeshadow palette..she love neutral taupe bronze color, and I’m thorn apart between suqqu himesango,TF golden mink or silver topaz, and dior rosy tan..for you which one better..thanks a lot..

Sweet make up temptations 1 January, 2014 - 3:18 pm

Hi Carol,
Some time ago I would definitely recommend you Suqqu vs TF. In 2013 TF came up with Orchid Haze which is much better quality than his other quads, also even better than Suqqu. If your mum has green/brown eyes and she loves purple(ish) shadows, Tom Ford Orchid Haze would be the one to go for (before any of his other quads). Then if she prefers to stay with brown/bronze/pink shadows, Suqqu Himesango is the one to go for. The Dior is not bad but compared to this TF and Suqqu, it doesn’t have the same lasting power or interesting combination of finishes for 50+. Hope this helps 🙂

2 colors on the right is the only one she use everyday and it’s almost gone now..so I want to buy something for her that can be a better product..do you have any other suggestion for me?thanks a lot again for your reply..

Reply
Sweet make up temptations 2 January, 2014 - 2:38 pm

I had a quick look at the palette, if she uses only two eyeshadows why don’t you try her with Burberry monos ? they are extremely good and look very luxurious 🙂

The darker shade in the Dior is very similar to the darker in Silvered topaz but the quality of the other shadows in this TF is not as good as Suqqu.
There is an option too with the Tom Ford trio She Wolfs, it has a very pigmented dark (although not plum toned) and a more fun yet wearable taupe-grey. But it may be sold out now.
I think I would go for the Suqqu you mentioned, the problem is that the darker pan is tiny so if she uses mostly that one it will get used very fast… that’s why the Orchid Haze would be a nice option, you will get more and the darker pan is a bit more similar to the Dior than the trio She Wolfs, I also love the Suqqu number 04, my fav from Suqqu because it goes from sheer to dark and I use only one quad to get a complete look…
For her, maybe the the Suqqu Himesango would be the most wearable high quality quad (quint) you could offer her.

Sorry to bother you again..I just wondering do you think orchid haze has chunky glitter?i read one review that said the glitter it’s a bit too much for daily use..what do you think?i would love to hear your opinion..
I think I would go with Orchid Haze since it’s better quality than suqqu..hehehe..I hope it would be a daily use eyeshadow for her..

Sweet make up temptations 4 January, 2014 - 10:23 am

not on that palette, Orchid Haze is divine soft and no glitter! 🙂

Sarah S. 10 January, 2014 - 3:35 pm

Hello Sonia,

I have noticed that you get a little Cheek brush in the cheek compacts, and I cannot help but wonder if they are above average when it comes to compact brushes? Does the softness compare to the softness of the Suqqu Cheek brush?

The hairs look like the ones on the Cheek brush as far as I can tell, and I just couldn’t help but wonder if it was a cheaper way to try out the brushes before making the big investment.

Anyway nice post, it makes me wanna go shopping Suqqu products 😉

Reply
Sweet make up temptations 10 January, 2014 - 9:41 pm

Hi Sarah!
they are not average, they are much better than average, not as soft as their brushes but still soft, I feel the hairs are mixed with something else, it may not only be squirrel, or maybe yes.. but some bristles are thicker, maybe also to make them stronger otherwise they may be too floppy to do the job.
They are not that amazing for blush but they are precious for sculpting (contour and highlight) specially the angled ones. Sometimes when I travel (with my motorbike), I pack little products and put these in my makeup bag. Also for my daily makeup bag. Unlike others, these do help 🙂

Sarah S. 11 January, 2014 - 4:00 pm

Thank you Sonia, that is nice to know. I kinda feel like it is worth considering when looking at the price, because sometimes I feel a bit sad that I pay for those small makeup brushes and never use them (for example I really do not like the brush that comes with Chanel blushes, so they might as well not include it). 🙂

Thanks much!
