You know how much I love makeup brushes, now, this is what happens when “cute” meets “efficient” ย :
And this is what happens when “Alien” meets “My Little Pony” and have children in Heaven :
The result is absolutely divine. Well, you don’t always “need” this kind of brushes, but I am pretty sure there is a big chance you just want to get them anyway ๐
Remember I told you I had to write a review on some Koyudo that didn’t feel “that” soft, I was recently spoiled with the Chikuhodo and the Koyudo White Mushroom so all the brushes felt kind of scratchy after having these ones !
So, I was concentrating on many softer brushes and ignored these 3 Koyudo for a while, then in order to write a review I started using them, at first I wasn’t that excited but one day I realized that I was automatically using them and finding them extremely efficient, these are the three I am talking about :
You probably guessed why I ordered them in the first place : they look different. Yes they do and they are. Today I love them and I will share my thoughts on them and also on some other cute ones.
Koyudo BP026 (goat)
This is a brush in two dimensions : the outside feels a bit rough and you see that the bristles are a bit thicker but all of the inside hair feels so soft ! Softer than any Mac, softer than the Hakuhodo 210 for example or the G527 , more similar to the softness you get with the J528. The firmness of the brush helps to deliver an excellent “flat firm yet flexible” blending, one side is shorter so it’s firmer, the other side is longer and more flexible, blends whatever product you applied previously with the shorter side. I use it for contour or blush, not in a circular motion but in a sweeping motion, the short side goes first.
I wasn’t realizing how much I loved it until I was automatically putting it inside my daily makeup bag: “YOU ! AGAIN !” ๐ ๐ ๐
These are the angled brushes that I love to use, this Koyudo is flatter and denser :
Koyudo BP019 ย (goat)
I ordered it because again, it looked so unique. I was disappointed at first, the longer side is a big too rough, but I don’t think you are supposed to use that side at all actually !!! ๐
As you see there is a “layered side” and a “straight side”, I press the layered side again my cheeks and draw any movement that side leading. You can even draw quite a precise application since the other side ends as a line. The longer side helps blending whatever product you applied with the shorter side. I use it often with nudish blushes or even bronzers, more when I want to give an extra dimension to my cheeks or face without looking for too much precision.
Compared to the Hakuhodo S 110, although it doesn’t hurt at all, the hair are slighter thicker, the shape is not the same but the size is quite similar.
Koyudo C004P (goat)
It’s very soft goat, similar to Saikoho in my opinion.
I have similar brushes in my collection, I am loving the Hakuhodo J210 and this C004p the most. The C004p head is smaller and the handle shorter. It’s very nicely bundled and dense, firm but soft.
Koyudo Sakura 022
The total length of this brush is 11.5cm, it feels like a small kabuki with a handle ๐
It’s really soft, I believe squirrel. It’s dense but not fully-dense, still has flexibility with precision, something in between a Fupa-01 and a blush brush. Really special and cute.
This Sakura is a bit difficult to find, what I did is that I saw it here (because again Nikoleta got me into it…) and then I sent an email to Koyudo. They sent me an invoice and shipped it to me. It’s the same if you contact CoolJapanNow, you send them an email and I believe they are able to get any Koyudo brush for you, even those not showing on their website.
Koyudo FU-PA01
Difficult to believe this is goat hair, it’s called Sokuho goat. To me this feels softer than the Hakuhodo Saikoho kabukis for example.
It’s a thick mass of hair, I can try to use it in a stippling motion and it will never hurt. I use it for blush because I have a few that are so difficult to grab that I nearly need a sponge to get some color on bristles (Guerlain, Addiction) so it’s perfect for that. Also for applying powder in a stippling motion. I don’t know if you can see how perfectly it is layered, the shape is even and rounded, I just cannot find any flaws, the work put into these brushes makes them worth every penny.
Koyudo FPr001
This brush makes me laugh because of what is engraved on it… Purin might be a pudding in Japan, but here in Switzerland or France it’s something you certainly don’t want to put in your mouth ๐
It’s goat hair, the surface is really huge once you wash it, it spreads to a 4.5cm diameter. Very soft, very cute, I don’t use it much but it’s great for softly buffing or applying powder in a stippling motion, no way that this brush will ever hurt.
Similar softness than the Hakuhodo J528 but it’s a bit less densely packed, much more flexibility.
Compared to the Hakuhodo G527, the FPr is softer and has more flexibility, it’s more “fluffy”.
Koyudo DEKAFupa-01
Same softness as the Fupa-01 so I believe same material, Sokuho goat hair. I have to admit that I haven’t found the perfect usage for this brush yet, except for massaging my face ๐ ย which is already a good reason, or a good enough reason. I am in the hunt for extraordinary brushes and this one is one of the most extraordinary brushes I have ever seen.
You can see more pictures here, ย it’s a dwarfish giant, measures only 10.5cm in total length, the surface it covers is 4 cm diameter. If you are looking for a huge flat extremely dense and extremely soft brush, this is the one. I will dearly take care of it because I am not sure I will ever find anything like it. Well, I take care of all my brushes anyway but these are so special and unique that they nearly feel like they have a soul ๐
Koyudo BP022
A flat squirrel brush, insanely soft and dense. Soft like the Z-3 and it’s also grey squirrel. I use mine for powder, highlighter or blush, covers the same surface than the Hakuhodo J528 but I use the Hakuhodo more with foundation or creamy products and this squirrel one with powder products.
Koyudo BP016
Made with Hosomitsu goat (if I got it right…). Extremely soft, very similar to the Hakuhodo J110, just slightly less dense but you can barely tell. For me it’s one of best size for blush brushes. I love both the Hakuhodo and the Koyudo, they are both extremely good. These are in my top favorite blush brushes and they will be forever.
I hope you liked the pictures and that you find them helpful. I try not to be too boring when I talk about these brushes but I really do love them, even though I haven’t mastered all of them yet ๐
So many unique brushes, Koyudo will never cease to surprise me. These brushes offer so many possibilities and finishes and I think that there isn’t a texture that could resist them !
They remind me a bit of my motorbike : UNSTOPPABLEย ! ย – ย just like the Koyudo ๐

Oh my goodness your collections is swoon worthy!! I want to come play at your house!
you can come anytime ๐
I have a slightly off topic question. I contacted your friend Malin at Kolindo about the Chikuhodo MK-2, the one with the cherry blossoms on the handle. I believe it is !00% blue squirrel. My question is, how soft is the Chikuhodo in comparison with the blue squirrel brushes from Hakuhodo? I have quite a few of them and wanted to try Chikuhodo for comparison. This will be my first Chikuhodo. I like to collect the very softest brushes as I have very sensitive skin that turns red at the touch. I can never find your White Mushroom at the sites you list or anywhere else. Is it gone for good? Love, love, love your blog!
Hi Mimi, thanks ๐
The Chikuhodo are grey squirrel, in terms of softness I can compare to the Hakuhodo S 111, this one is blue squirrel, well it is as soft or more, I cannot feel that much difference to be honest… Chikuhodo works more with grey squirrel material and Hakuhodo Blue one.. You will not be disappointed by the MK-2 anyway ! it’s a gorgeous brush absolutely insanely soft on the skin !
The White Mushroom is just the most amazing goat brush ! if you love soft brushes, this one is the one to have !
I think it’s still available, look here : http://cooljapannow.jp/detail.html?KEY=NEOKUD-16
Thank you so much for the link to CDJapan. I just ordered the White Mushroom and I’m so excited! I’ll let you know when I receive it. Thank you again and I love your “madness” about all the brushes, so nice to know there are others out their like me!
I hope you will love this White Mushroom, for me it’s the most amazing brush I got in 2012 ๐
Everyone has his own preferences but this brush was a big surprise for me ! Please let me know if you like it.
Thank you for your support Mimi ! I am so relieved I am not the only one !!!
Did you get a new camera? Loving how clear and nice these pictures look! Your brushes look super duper soft. I want to pet them!
well, I got new lenses and I am learning how to take pictures ๐
I have the same camera but this time it’s mine ๐ (I was borrowing it before).
Also changed the lights, it’s studio lights. Gets better, I hope you can more clearly see the details of the hair and handles and I hope the pictures will get better with time !
Your collection is amazing… Luv the pictures. And I am most most impressed by FPr001. I hope I can restrain myself till it’s sold out!
Hi Amy, it is not LE in my opinion ๐
I don’t know if I have to be proud of my collection ๐
I am just too easily tempted when it comes to brushes !!!
Oh the sakura 22 looks cute.
Is the type of goat hair from FuPa 01 the same as from white FuPa 02 ?
I hate that i cant find any better translation on the goat hair types on koyudo website. I’m really confused…. I also tried a special japanese-german page but it was not much better than google ๐
If you look at the CDJapan site here : http://cooljapannow.jp/detail.html?KEY=NEOKUD-69
and here http://cooljapannow.jp/detail.html?KEY=NEOKUD-95
you have more details on the fupas ๐
Me too, I need to ask them for a translation of all materials because to be honest I am often also lost ๐
they are so cute! I love how koyudo care for details and their brushes are so nicely packed in pretty boxes. They make also very original brushes in tridimensional way as the ones you’ve showed. there was a video on that but don’t manage to find it. the sakura 22 is mix of goat and squirrel, I think. as for ordering, I prefer cooljapannow for their point system and fast shipping and they have some nice sales on brushes sometimes.
Hi Nikoleta,
Koyudo brushes are amazing, so far I have never been disappointed neither by the packaging nor by the quality !
If you find the video please let me know ! you have the most incredible links ! ๐
I can not believe the Sakura 22 is a mix because it’s so soft !!! it feels like only squirrel but I could not find the info.
Yes I just saw that about the cooljapannow offers, and you can also get points, I wonder if you get any reductions, did you try that point system yet ?
Hi Sonia ;). I have only had success ordering Koyudo from Cool Japan. I love them! The point system is I nice bonus. Every order I make accrues points that I use on the following order. On and on it goes! I feel like I never will pay shipping again ;).
I have an email in to them to see if they can get me my Koyudo red squirrel!!!!
oh that’s great I hope they can ! you should get this one ๐
Hi Sonia
Your blog is the most amazing resource for brush reviews! I really enjoyed this review and I think I will be getting Koyudos now
Cindy
oh Cindy !! hi ๐ thank you sweetheart !
how are you ??
it has been a while ๐
Let me know if I can help with anything !
I am going to do a brush overhaul in 2013 ๐ I got a new job, i think I deserve a treat!! I am going to send you an email and get your thoughts on my planned purchases soon ๐
Yes, it has been a while. Hope you are doing well, I havent been on MUA much over the last few months. Your brush collection is blooming. Its such a joy to see all the pictures on your blog. I have brush envy.
Thanks dear and keep up the good work!! I’m doing an LMdB collection post soon. Its taking a while to take pics etc etc… :/ i have way too many (and yet not enough)
Cindy
I can’t wait for your LMdB collection post ! I am glad I can now get them in Zuneta website !
Good luck with your new job, wishing you lots of success ! ๐
Waiting for your email then ๐
I wish I have kept the link for the video ๐ I don’t know if the sakura is a mix, I don’t remember anymore if I have read something on it somewhere, there wasn’t much info on these brushes before you gave us the chance to discover more on them ๐ I hope koyudo will put some details on all of their brushes even for those that are still not on their official website.
as for cooljapan, they offer points for every order and for your birthday and they offer sometime reductions on sets.
I’ll see if I can find any info on these Sakura series, there is a set that I am really wanting but I have to first check out the new Fupas, I think I will be pretty busy with them, I would certainly need more faces right now :)))) it’s going to get wild in here as soon as I get them ๐
I love your little comments about each of the brushes. Koyudo really are cute! And i have to ask, what is the not so appetising meaning of “purin”?
I made my Koyudo order, I actually can’t believe I took so long! They emailed me to say 3-5 days and we don’t have a huge issue with customs detaining our brushes to play with, so I’d all goes well, I’ll be getting those new fu-pas before end of next week. I just saw the other day that the white mushroom is back on cdjapan… Have been working up the courage (and the finances!) to order it!
๐ thank you Bonnie ! oooh, well…. Purin is … “liquid manure” or “slurry pit” … told you.. not pretty ๐
I know what you mean about courage, I gave up, I am very naughty when we are talking about resisting Japanese brands, I am so weak ๐ I hope my reviews help either to control or to target the brushes you would or could love the most !
Well, yes, you do help us target what we want but that leads to more naughtiness as I hear of brushes I’d never discover on my own. Now you’ve unleashed the website connection to CDJapan that is in English so I can read it and order there too. Chikuhodo here I come! Oh, no! My poor checking account……..Oh well, life is to be lived and enjoyed.
Haha, “liquid manure”, “slurry pit”! Definitely not as appetising as a pudding ๐
I’ve been following your reviews fairly closely to see what brushes to order. I have an excel list with the brushes I want in an ever-growing list, then the function/product to use it with next to it, then I have a slow and torturous process of elimination, or I very guiltily add a new brush, every time a new review from you comes out!
Glad it’s nothing like that ๐
Tomorrow I’ll have a brush review for 4 new brushes but only one gets my interest (but this one is A WINNER), if I manage to wake up in time, I will take the pics and upload them for you ๐
Thank you as always! Can’t wait to see which brush this is … hmmm…
here it is the link ;), I hope it will work
http://co-ip.jp/modules/wordpress/index.php?p=143
Waw this is amazing ! thank you Nikoleta that was really fast, although I don’t understand a word of what they are saying I love to see them in action ! if I go there one day I would love to visit the shops and the manufacture, that would be my biggest dream !
Amazing, utterly amazing. I think you have become the Brush Queen of the Internet within the last year ๐ Your collection is incredibly huge and diverse and I admire you for collecting these little treasures, figuring out how to best use them, taking detailed photos and sharing your thoughts. I would be totally overwhelmed, and possibly bankrupt!
I especially appreciate the consistency in which you compare new brushes with others that are similar. It helps me figure out if I have something in my stash that can do the same job…or if I really need/want this new brush.
I am glad I could afford so many brushes this past year, I will not be able to do that forever specially now that the works at home have to start ๐
So happy that it helps and that I can share my passion with all of you, couldn’t wish of a better year !!!
Ohhh myyyy! I need these lol! I’m a Hakuhodo fan and I have lots of them plus a couple of Chikuhodos. Great post. Looking forward to seeing more of the Koyudos!
thank Bea ๐
Quick question: have you tried any of the BP eye brushes from Koyudo?
yes I did, I own the BP033 (the squirrel version of the Mac 217 actually, just slightly smaller but if you are looking for a squirrel 217 this is it), the BP023 that I use either as highlight or to blend the complete eyeshadow application.
But the Koyudo eye shadow brush that you absolutely need is the C011 actually, trust me, just get it.
Sonia, how the BP033 compares to the hakuhodo G5523 ? Is it a thick brush or airy as the hakuhodo G5523 or G5533 ? How do you use it ? Sorry to other you with all my questions, I’m making my new list ๐ and don’t find any information about koyudo eye brushes. bisous
Hi Nikoleta,
The BP033 is similar shape than the G5523, but thicker, more fluffy and it also remains nicely and tightly packed (so still precise and directional), the surface is flatter and firmer which is better for blending. I use it for the crease when I want a stronger application than with the G5523 but still very soft. There isn’t much info on their brushes, I have only a few and I should write a review but I am waiting to receive a bit more, hopefully soon…
If I have the possibility I will take a pic later and will share it here ๐
Bisous <3
here are two pics, not the best but I don’t have access to the “parasol” lights at the moment ๐
1
2
it’s the BP033 and the Haku G5523
thank you, Sonia, to take time for me (tu es un amour). The BP033 will certainly be in my list as well as some other eye brushes, I really want to explore their eye brushes. I’m waiting for CJN to ship my last order so that I can have my points. I hope the red squirrel will be still available at that time even though I’ve counted my blush brushes and got scaired ๐ I have so many, will need several cheeks to use them all regularly.
BTW for those who plan to make chikuhodo orders, the artist 18-2 can be a nice alternative to the fine kalla, I think, or for low budgets for the Z-4, I’m using it quite often these days and it is silky soft, suitable for pigmented brushes, I’ve used it also to contour, it is rounder than the Z-4 even though Z-4 is more beautyful and somewhat hairs are thicker. I didn’t like 18-2 at first as I was expecting a really round, flatter at top brush but after using it several times, it has a lot of potential for a reasonable price and it is in stock at kohlindo.
no worries ! I wish I could tell you more about their brushes.
The BP023 is like the black Hakuhodo 212 but softer, the C011 is also one to pick up, great pencil brush.
I will soon place a Chikuhodo order I am just going through my extensive wishlist and I have to narrow it down to the most wanted ๐
I’ve just gone around to the CDJapan site and spent an indecent amount of money on brushes. I’ll let you know when they arrive and my reactions to them. All thanks to your blogs!
Thanks for letting me know ๐
yes please please please let me know ๐ I hope you love them !
Don’t know if you’ve seen it yet, but the top photo in this post is on cdjapan Koyudo page and the links to your post are there as well. So cool.
yes I saw that thank you ๐
they have asked my permission but I did not know they would link several posts ๐ that’s nice !
Dear god, I just got my fu-pa01 and…..I just plunked down a sizeable chunk of change on another Koyudo order. It is all your fault Sonia! 0_o ๐ ๐
you can blame Nikoleta, she started it ๐
Nikoleta, I think it often but I do want to tell you again: Thank you for the intro to Koyudo! I can say these brushes are collection changing ๐
xo
I’ve probably started it but Sonia developped our addiction and thanks to her shopping via CJN is easier and there is much more choice. Thank you, Sonia. I have a long list of koyudo brushes. I’m lemming also the Z-1 and Z-5, but everything in its own time ๐
Thank you Nikoleta! I’m really glad you found Koyudo as I am loving my fu-pa01. I’ve ordered the DEKA, fu-pa 02, 06,07,11, 13. Next up is some of the BP series brushes lol. ๐
BTW Sonia, I ordered these plus the Houkodou foundation brush thru paid CP from that 3rd party I mentioned. I did the math and she was charging me the same (a couple of dollars cheaper even) as it would have cost me if I ordered thru CDJ due to their shipping/handling fees. I wanted to try it this way to see if I would get the brushes any faster (or slower). I did an order for both the black and pink fu-pa02 thru CDJ at the same time she did thru the Koyudo site so let’s see what happens. ๐
Bea, could you please let me know how the Houkodou brush is when you receive it? Or Melissa? I’m very interested in it!
Sigh so many brush lemmings among other things ๐
Yes absolutely Bonnie! I will even take pics and email to Sonia who can then pass them on to whoever wants to see. I have a thing for ball shaped brushes lol. I adore my white goat haired Takeda so the minute I saw it, I just had to get my paws on it haha! ๐
Thank you Bea! ๐ I’m love dense white goat-hair brushes *snuggles*
I too, am saying Dear God! I just received my Red Squirrel brush! It’s THE softest thing I’ve ever felt! OMG, I’m sooooo glad I got it! I want a big powder one now! Thank you, thank you Sonia!
One question, do I need the Sakura 022? How soft is it in comparison with Suquu, MK-2 etc? Can you advise?
Don’t thank me, thank Buggsiebee ๐ she told me I needed it ๐ she was so right !!!
The Sakura is soft but not as soft as the MK-2 or the Suqqu. It does feel like 100% squirrel hair to me but could have goat (Nikoleta may have read it somewhere but I cannot find it now), if it also has some goat hair, it’s very soft goat ! it’s more firm and therefore it’s better for placing product with more pressure and blending. It’s not a shape you will see very often, funny brush for sure ! I often use it to powder (I cannot powder a lot of surface on my face since my skin is very dry, so this delivers a controlled powder application and I can place and push the powder very softly, I mean this is just to give you an example ๐
Thank you Sonia for your reply. I think I’ll save my money for more Chikuhodo’s from Malin next month. And thank you Buggsiebee for letting us all know about the Red Squirrel. If you love soft brushes, you MUST own this one!
Sonia, how the sakura compares to Z-1 ? Is it as big and rounded ? I don’t see the sakura on CJN, hope they will bring this series too as there are some eye brushes that look interesting. CJN is so nice to give us the opportunity to have easier access to koyudo and they work fast on putting new stuff on their site, every day there are new temptations
Sonia, I’ve been meaning to ask you and any other ladies out there who care to help, I am needing to buy some very soft, fluffy eye shadow brushes. Any advice on this? Thanks!
Hi Mimi, what would be the purpose of that brush ?
base application ? blending ? crease definition ?
are you looking for a brush that could do a bit of everything ?
Sonia, I need advise on all of them. I usually grab something to apply a skin colored shadow all over, then need a smaller denser one to apply color to the lid. Lately I’ve been learning to put a darker shadow in the crease for definition which I need cuz I have puffy eyes. Would a blending brush be different from the fluffy one I use first for applying the all over base color? I have some good large flat ones from Hakuhodo for all over but I seem to prefer rounded fluffy ones. Burberry makes a good one like that.
Hi Mimi, I don’t know which Burberry it is…
I can show you for example these ones here, they are all good for applying base color or blending, some are softer than others.
I have the Edward Bess that is rounded and great for applying eyeshadow all over and blending, it got softer with time but I’d rather prefer if it was even a bit softer… but it is very efficient and I use it when I need a great blending.
The Hakuhodo J214 is a great one for buffing, I use it on a daily basis because I like that my eyeshadow application is very soft for the office but just be careful to not “over-blend” or you will remove your eyeshadow.
The Trish is also a fluffy flat(ish) brush for base application, not as soft as the Hakuhodos but efficient.
All of these brushes are fantastic, it depends if you want a heavy application or a more sheer wash, if you want to blend or if you want to use also to apply the eyeshadow. The Suqqu and the 2 chikuhodos are the softest, maybe too soft for blending hardest colors. Since the Edward Bess is the most precise, you may want to use this one for one-step done application. The J5522 is just slightly bigger than the Edward bess but softer. If you have the link for the Burberry could you please show it to me ? thank you ๐
Sonia, Thanks for the input. The photos were very helpful. Ed Bess is too rough, can’t get Suquu here in US (I did manage to get their powder brush and blush brush on Dollyleo before they closed down). I have put in a pre-order with Malin as the Chiku looks like the best bet for what I’m after. The only way I know to show you the Burberry is go to Nordstrom.com and choose Burberry Beauty. They make 3 brushes, 09 is the one I was referring to, the slanted one for the socket is great for those of us who need help applying it there, and a face brush that can be used for powder or blush. All are very nicely soft!
oh yes I see which one !!!
I am not a fan of this kind of brushes though, I either use denser blending brushes or smaller crease brushes, this one seems to be in between but I havent’ tried it yet. I do have the slanted one and it does not work for me ๐ or I cannot work with it ๐ too big for a slanted brush (for my preference), let’s say that I have better “slanted” alternatives that are easier for me to use. I am not saying it’s a bad brush, I just can work better with others ๐
Chikuhodo brushes are perfect (dense and soft) and I love them so much. If you can wait a few days there is I hope a helpful post that might be of interest to you ๐
Thanks Sonia! I know what you mean about the slanted one being a bit too big and perhaps diffuse. What do you recommend for the crease area so I don’t get a hard stripe that is difficult to blend out? I definitely will wait for that upcoming post! I need to get some brushes like the kind you like for the eyes and I love the very softest ones.
Hi Mimi,
In that case if you use powder products, I will recommend you the S122. If you use more creams, then the J125R, if you want an angled one for blending I like the J232… just to give you a few examples. You can see pics here and here.
The S122 is excellent for controlling the application and blending and is incredibly dense and soft, it delivers a soft application that you can build up if you want, for me it’s a dream and I am sure you will love it!
Thank you for your recommendations Sonia. I just placed a Hakuhodo order last night! Oh well, shipping is only $9 and it gets to me in 3 days. I shall order a couple of these and give them a spin. Thanks again!
Ni Nikoleta, the Sakura is nothing like the Z1, not as big not as dense and more directional.
Would you like some pics of both together ?
I surely can do that !
they told me they would even have more brushes soon ๐ cool ๐
If that doesn’t bother you, I’d like indeed some photos but it can wait, you have enough to do.
It’s great CJN would have new brushes ๐
of course it never bothers me ! I am really pleased to do that !
in the meantime, maybe you already have the link but here it is : http://www.koyudo.co.jp/EnHP/List/SakuraList.html
I have more free time now that the dog is back in good health ! what a speed recovery she made ๐
That Sakura011 has attracted my eye since the first time I saw it. I have had an urge to purchase it even though I don’t really need it. I think maybe it’s because it’s a unique looking brush. I’ve never seen one like it. I swear I am a sucker for an odd looking brush, or a brush which is not similar to anything I have in my collection. For example, the Inglot 5FS. I went and got a friend’s wife to grab it for me in Montreal. Same with the Claudio Riaz Instant Arch brush. I had to have it just because, so when my friend went to NYC, I asked her to pick it up for me. I have not used it and it is not a cheap brush either lol! I’m glad your dog has made a quick recovery Sonia. ๐ ๐
It is odd, makes me think of a cute little ogre ๐
so you didn’t try the Claudio Riaz ? I am looking for someone that actually has try them and loves them ๐
thanks Bea, she is doing great ๐
No, can you imagine? I haven’t used it yet. I had bought it to use for contouring down the sides of the nose. I will definitely let you know what I think of it once I get around to testing the brush. ๐
ok please let me know ๐
Nikoleta, here are some pics for you :
sakura vs H005 The sakura feels softer but it’s not as dense and fluffy
sakura vs z1 The z-1 is softer, shape is quite similar but the sakura is more pointed and less dense, firmer than the z-1
sakura vs c004 sakura is softer than the C004p, but the c004 is flatter and much denser, smaller version of the J210, less soft but still very soft and efficient
sakura vs z-1 again
some rounded brushes Sorry about the quality of the pics, I don’t have time to deploy the studio lights tonight but I hope you can still see how they compare, if you have any question, please don’t hesitate.
I actually use the sakura quite often, a nice little brush quite versatile for me, blush, powder and also contour when I just want some relief and not much precision, it’s just a different brush, I don’t think you will find anything like that. When I ordered it I was expecting a more even, rounded shape and more densely packed but I am happy it’s not as dense as I thought it would be because it makes it more unique.
thank you, Sonia, for the pics, quality is very good, don’t worry. Ok, I need both Z1 and sakura ๐ sakura seems a very good blush brush for a round shaped brush afficionado like me and Z1 is more for bronzer, I love my H005 but prefer longer hadles as they can fit in my brush roll. Really hope CNJ will list all of the koyudo series, even though if they do I’ll ruin myself ๐
Hi Mimi, I have both the Edward Bess and the Burberry 09 (it was a GWP) and I actually prefer the EB for the density.
Hi Bonnie, I agree that the Edward Bess is denser but I am psycho for softness so I gave my Bess to my son’s girlfriend. It was a nice fluffy brush but a little too scratchy for my super sensitive eye lids. I cannot wear eyeshadow with any glitter or sparkle because the little tiny shiny pieces scratch my lids and can make them sore for 2 days!
Ooh then softness is definitely important if your eyes are sensitive. I also got the Tom Ford on Sonia’s recommendation, and it’s not as fluffy but I think it’s such a multi-tasker ๐
Btw Sonia, do you have the Hakuhodo Mizubake? That’s one brush from Hakuhodo I’m very interested in getting (almost as much as the G543, but that one has now been knocked off my list haha).
Hi Bonnie, I did, I don’t anymore since I gave it away, not because I did not like it. But I will get the Koyudo Mickey one ๐
Oooh, I never thought about comparing the Koyudo Mickey (that’s the Mickey Mouse silhouette right?) and the Mizubake. Well, I wanted the Mizubake for cream blushes so I might stick with that….
Are you getting the new Valentine’s Day set? (or your boyfriend is, as a gift :P)
BF hates val day….
yes that’s the silhouette I am talking about ๐
I don’t know what I am getting at the moment, still browsing.. I did get a few Tanseido because I am looking for very tiny and very soft lid brushes (or smudging) but other than that still browsing the thousand sites…
Nyaww, val day present for yourself then ๐
The Mickey silhouette does look very cute. You know the brush that I’m always tempted by is the green plant one in the pot. I think it’s just adorable! And I really want to buy a few and sit it on my window sill but I don’t think that will be good for the brushes…
hahaha you are right ! I’ll do that !
I am also tempted by the green plant one but I just don’t really like the “pot” ๐
I am trying to be very patient about my order from CDJ I made the 19th of January.
I ordered the BP026 Highlight Brush, BP010 Powder Brush, BP035 Eye Shadow Brush M, BP036 Eye Shadow Brush S, and the Red Squirrel Cheek Brush.
Quite a haul, at least for me.
I’m really looking forward to starting this next stage of my adventure with cosmetics.
Ah- a heads up for those who, like me, love the Benefit cream eye shadow line.
They are discontinuing all but Skinny Jeans and RSVP. The new colours are lovely, of course, but…
I have two orders pending since the same period, I hope they will ship soon as I’ve already made my new list ๐
BTW did you see hakuhodo has increased their shipping to 14 dollars, indeed USPS seems to have increased their prices but it’s still reasonable.
I have a HUGE koyudo wishlist at this moment… ๐
In the meantime I will receive a few Tanseido and some others from Rakuten next week, I just can’t wait to get them and show them to you, I am sure they will answer many questions or “needs” ๐ yes it is still possible ๐
No I didn’t see that, I think it’s still reasonable for their great service, thanks for letting us know !
I know how you must feel, I hope your wait will be worth it. I love the BP026 ! very unique and efficient ! Of course the Red squirrel will be fantastic !
I have the BP010 in my wishlist, I have a similar shaped one from Chikuhodo and I am loving it so much ! and of course now I also want the Koyudo with that similar shape ๐
I don’t know the BP036 and the BP035 at all but please let me know if you like them. I don’t like pine squirrel very much but if you don’t mind, please let me know if the quality is good ! It will help others that may consider getting it ๐
oh no, sad to read that they will discontinue the cream shadows … ๐
Wishing you all the best in your new adventure <3
Nicoletta, I see it’s true misery loves company!
What did you order?
I’m in Spain and it will be interesting to compare how long our orders take to arrive.
My adventure with brushes is new because up til now I have contented myself with finger application of concealer and blush and using eye shadows in pencil form.
Applying blush with the Nars Yachiyo brush was a complete revelation of what a brush can do.
There was no turning back to fingers after that!
Sonya, because I’m new to all this I’ll probably make many impulsive purchases that I’ll come to regret later.
Is there any chance of organising an annual ‘swap’ or trade off or sale of under-loved brushes amongst us all?
Sonia, I read your comments about pine squirrel hair and I went around to Hakuhodo’s fantastic site to read more about the different types of hair:
http://en.hakuho-do.co.jp/user_data/learn_material.php
I had to exercise a fair amount of self control not to place an order while I was there, but
I have a lot to learn and I’ll not make another brush order without consulting here first.
๐
what I have learned with time is that when I order a brush and I am disappointed with the material, whatever the hair and providing it is of good quality (soft enough and pleasant to use) later on I always find the right product to use it with, it did happen to me so many times ! Pine squirrel brushes as not as beautiful to look at compared to blue or grey squirrel (just my opinion) but they do an excellent job and the price is more affordable.
Same thing as you, Sonia, I’ve hated the G515 at first but these days learned to appreciate it (two years after buying it !), I’ve even bought it’s big sister the G513. Same with the slanted big foundation brushes from hakuhodo. My HG concealer and highligheter G545 was sitting in my drawers for months before I’ve found what to do with, now I have two of them ๐ Or the G544, I have bought it for foundation but didn’t like at all till the day I’ve applied a powder blush and it gave it the most polished and airbrushed look, it turned to be a good one for cream blushes too. On the other hand, when I have too many brushes that double my favorites, I’m selling them from time to time that I can afford others that I want more.
I’m learning not to give up on my brushes too soon, also. I put my Hakuhodo G503 angled goat/horse blush brush in a give away box as I thought it was too hard, didn’t work for blush, and realized that contouring doesn’t work for me. On a whim, I took it out of the box and tried it to apply loose powder firmly and by golly, it was great! Now I’m wondering about all those pine squirrel brushes I gave away!
That’s great ! good idea !
I have a little box full of “lets try another day” ๐ I am sure that one day I will use them and it’s a funny sensation to rediscover them and assign them a new role to play ๐
the box is getting smaller so it’s a good sign !! I am so glad I kept them !
Ok Kay, I feel guilty now. I’ll fish my G503 out again & try to put it to use:)
I find it way to dense for contouring & for blush. I’ve just made a little search for it & can’t even find it. Poor little neglected G503:(
And the funny thing with some brushes is that the more you use them the better they get so I try to use them all, obviously not at the same time but today I had to wash 80 brushes and clean another 20 without water.. I am getting good at this and I can manage that in a record time ๐
I will try the G544 for powder blush since I have it, I do use the J544 for cream by the way ๐
Nikoleta, I love to read different uses for brushes! Thank you for sharing!!!!
Ditto Nikoleta ๐
It’s always fun & interesting to hear what uses others find for their brushes. I’m all for being experimental & not just following the instructions of the manufacturers.
Hi Sylvia,
Thank you for the idea, if there is people interested why not…
Do you already know the website Make up Alley ?
Make up Alley was new to me- now I’m registered.
Thanks for the headsup, Sonia!
I’ll place the first order on the 21 of january and the other on the 30 of january, I think they will ship in two-three weeks. The problem is that the pink fupa shipped on the 21 (ordered on the 14/12) is still not here although it has left Japan on the 22, I hate the French postal services ๐
I know just how you feel Nikoletta!
You would hate ( yeah, hate is a very appropriate word here ) the German customs / postal service just as much or more!!
They take ALL the fun out of ones purchases by sitting on them for EVER & then when they finally manage to get their butts into gear , you have to pay them a fee for doing their VEEEEEEEERY slow job!
Grrrrrrrrrr………..
I hate hearing that you guys have to pay customs tax on top of your purchases! I’m so glad we don’t (at least for purchases under $1000 and I haven’t yet made an order for over $1000…)
You guys have $1000 exemption?! OMG in Canada we are taxed anything over $20 for a purchase and anything over $60 if it is a gift! O_O
Yup, $1000 exemption for imported goods ๐ That’s why I’m willing to pay exorbitant shipping fees for makeup (if I do a larger order) because I know it will still be cheaper than buying at local prices here, ie, for the Shu 18G foundation brush, it costs AU$105 here compared to US$42. Buying both of the Koyudo fu-pas was only slightly more expensive than buying, say, the MAC 187 lol! And considering that the Australian dollar is pretty much equivalent to the US dollar….
I’d love to support the domestic retailers here, but prices are just ridiculous sometimes! And sometimes, not everything is available. I do still buy a lot of things here, but… I’ll do an occasional haul overseas haha!
Join the club Bea ๐
At least we don’t pay customs on parcels out of the EU countries now but the parcels still have to go through customs control which can slow down the delivery process a lot sometimes.
What’s wrong with these customs people? Don’t they know we’re trying to keep the economy going and they are just wrecking the smooth flow of goods? Some of us are great “instant gratification” types and their stalling is not a help!
My BF always tells me that if this country is going so well it’s because of me ๐ ๐ ๐
Heaven knows we’re doing our part!
similar here ๐
we pay way too much and often twice !
No order over $1000,-??
My,my, Bonnie you’d better make more effort ๐
Only because I’ve been ordering from different places recently! And it sounds a lot better when I tell myself I’ve only spent $200…. $100 here, $150 there ><
Now Bonnie’s a woman after me own heart! I also play that trick to myself. Do not add up your purchases whatever you do! That way you can tell yourself, “Well, I only got just a little blusher brush, a lipstick etc. What’s the big deal?” Too bad our husband don’t think this way.
but one day he opened my drawers O_o ๐ ๐
And did he quickly closed the drawers again lol. I have NEVER added up all my purchases. NEVER even thought of it, nuh uh not going there. ๐
well his jaw dropped… he asked “where did you put your clothes???” I answered “what clothes???”
Stop! I’m driving and I can’t stop laughing!!!!
be careful Stacy !!!
I wish we could all talk in person ! I am sure it would be hilarious to share our innocent faces ๐
We will soooon ……. (Hopefully)
:p
No, don’t ever add it all up. That would be just too harsh. Just file it away in the back of your mind and go into denial if it tries to surface!
Hahaha I swear I have this t-shirt with the quote “Deny everything” ๐ ๐ ๐
Excellent! Every woman is entitled to some denial.
Bahahahaha! You guys are women after my own makeup brush heart lol. I think we all need to meet up in Kumano, Japan. ๐ ๐ ๐
What a great idea, to meet up in Japan! We would egg each other on and totally lose control. What fun it would be. Next, we’ll travel to Sonia’s in Switzerland and see all her brushes, then on the Germany where I think Buggsiebee lives and on and on!
Oh no, busted! Does he have any idea what ONE of the costs? They’d freak if they knew!
HA HA Buggsiebee! Your comment to Bonnie is hilarious! Thanks for the laugh!
we have a very expensive passion I believe… but I also think that we have saved a lot of money avoiding other brushes that we wouldn’t use.. I don’t know what you think but I get more use of what I buy today than 1 year ago for sure, I hope it’s the same for you all…
Haha, “but one day he opened my drawers”, sounds like such a classic start to a tale of epic proportions!
I can’t even imagine adding up everything… nuh uh, that’s firmly shut out of my mind. Not looking, not thinking. I think I need that “Deny Everything” shirt! But I do agree, that ever since following this blog, all my purchases have been of things that I use constantly and need. I use most of the brushes I bought following advice from SMUT (that’s an acronomy Neo and I LOL over), almost everyday or in alternation. Without Buggsiebee and Sonia’s suggestion, I would not have gotten the BB Brush Spray (thanks!), and the constant enabling from everyone else, the Red Squirrel, and all with a smile on my face.
Okay, I admit, and a bit of guilt as well… a lot.
Ooooh what is a BB Brush Spray?? Is it something I need? ๐
Oh, it’s the Bobbi Brown Brush Spray. I’m quite enjoying it for in-between daily cleaning, or when my white goat brushes need a quick pick-me-up and it’s not quite time for the weekend spa. Buggsiebee recommended it to Sonia, who suggested it to me when I complained about my Chiku G-10 getting dirty quickly.
Wheeeeee! That girl who does CP for me for a fee in Japan just emailed that she has my Koyudo brushes and the Houkodou as well. It seems a bit faster than doing it thru CDJ. She sent me pics of them. I should have it by Friday at the earliest or sometime next week! I will send pics of the Houkodou to Sonia so she can show it to you guys. I hope it’s a good brush lol. ๐ ๐ ๐
Oh lucky Bea, I’m sure those Houkodou brushes ( did you get the set? ) are going to be out of this world. Not to mention the Koyudo which we all know & love already.
PLEASE let us know your thoughts on Houkodou! They looka sooooo luverly!!
@ Bea…..I mean tell us your thoughts….AFTER you’ve fully recovered from that NASTY customs fee. Ouch!! Close eyes…..fork out cash….unwrap parcel ….SQUEEEE! All the waiting & the expense …..It’s all worth it when you finally hold some fantasic treasures in your hands & you’re just thinking ‘YES’ ๐
I asked her to lower the declaration amout lol. She usually does that for me. I sure hope she does this time again because this is the biggest order I have done thru her. ๐
Perhaps you’ll get lucky & they’ll just slip though. It DOES happen once in a blue moon.
Good luck!
Buggsiebee you’re hilar! ๐ ๐ I am getting giddy just thinking about them brushes lol.
Alas, I only got the white goat brush, not the full set. I needed to allot more funds to the Koyudos lol. I will certainly let you know what I think of it. ๐
Well , that’s a neat coincidence because the white goat brush is the one I’m MOST definitely interested in. Mind you, that set with the little with pouch is very tempting ๐
I agree, the white goat is what I’m most interested in. Despite how annoying they are to keep clean, nothing keeps me more happy than seeing a whole lot of white goat brushes in various shapes and sizes —- *swoons*
Please let us know about the Houkodou! And fingers crossed that the blue moon is out when it arrives ๐
@ Bonnie…..Hahaha…..I love blue moons:)
We are a very strange bunch getting all excited about a pile of freshly cleaned white brushes, but I have to admit that it really does brighten my morning when I get up to my beautiful fluffy & dry babies. They always feel so extra specially soft & put a smile on my face – which is always a good thing in the a.m!!
Simply put, they just make me happy ๐
So do blue moons, but they’re a lot rarer!
I can’t wait to see them !!!!
@ Bea, do you think that your CP in Japan would be interested in another client?
Perhaps you could ask & let me know her contact info if she’s interested. I have been using Tenso who are nice & inexpensive but some stores don’t accept foreign credit card details so it would be helpful to have a CP.
Sure Buggsiebee ๐ I’ve already mentioned to her that there might be people who might be contacting her lol. Here is the link to her website http://bringblingjp.blogspot.ca/ and you will find her email address in the Order section. Her name is Tommy. Just tell her I sent you if you do try out her services. ๐
Hey Speedy Bea ๐
Wow!! That’s so cool!! Thanks for getting back to me so fast !
I most certainly will contact ‘her’ – Tommy ๐ – & will shout out your name when I place my Houkodou oder ….for starters!!!
I find the company name ‘ Houkodou’ so hard to remember. I have to check on the spelling every time I write it. My grey cells certainly aren’t what they used to be ๐
Thank you Bea, I will for sure get in touch with her !
Sonia, I broke down and ordered the sakura011 and another fu-pa01 directly from Koyudo last Friday Feb 1st. On Mon Feb 4, they replied to me with the total amount but didn’t send me a PP invoice. I replied asking about it but didn’t hear back so yesterday I sent them another email asking for an invoice. They replied right back with one and I paid so hopefully they will send it soon. A gf of mine put in an order with CDJ on Jan 27. She just got her shipping notice yesterday. I had also done an order with them right after she did on the same day and I have heard nothing lol. I just can’t figure out how it works over there lmao! ๐ ๐
Hey Bea, if Koyudo sends you the total, they expect you to just go ahead & pay. They don’t normally send an invoice. You just pay the amount into their email address = also pp account. You could write something in the comments box, but I think they just connect the amount paid to one’s email address. If your paypal account is under a different email to your regular mail account I would perhaps let them know. So far – 4 orders later, they haven’t made a mistake yet, so they definitely have a system.
The GOOD news is that Koyudo ONLY takes your cash if they have the brushes ready to go so I’m sure you’ll recieve a shipping notice within the next day / two.
Tommy mailed me & said ALL ok :))
YAY Houkodou here I come!! These had BETTER be good Bea!!!!!
@Buggsie: Ohhhh thanks for the clarification. Since they did send me an invoice and I paid, then I take that to mean they have it in stock lol. If you just send them the money, don’t you have to eat the PP fees or do they pay that? I just wanted to see which avenue would be fastest, thru Tommy, Koyudo or CDJ so my orders are all over the place haha! I can’t wait to compare notes on the Houkodou. Did you order the whole set? ๐ ๐
๐ฎ sometimes I think it’s just to make us work harder to deserve them !!!
I really do appreciate that they ship internationally (I really do) but I wish the process was smoother and clearer..
I hope you will get them soon ๐ can’t wait for you to tell me ๐
Oh I hear you about the availability of these brushes Sonia. A few years ago when I was all by my lonesome in my discovery and love for Japanese handcrafted brushes, I was racking my brain trying to figure out a way to get my hands on the other brands besides Hakuhodo. I found Tommy for Takeda, Chikuhodo, Tanseido, and I had the bff running around Tokyo looking for the Chomotto Beaute brushes. Now I have found you guys and more brands are shipping internationally, making it easier to share my love for them and I find it is my wallet who is trying so hard to be scarce lol! ๐ ๐
๐ ๐
I cannot tell you how pleased I am with all the new choices too !
Bea, that’s fantastic!
I’m still waiting for a reply to the email enquiry I sent CDJ about the status of my 19 January order and it’s good to know there are alternative routes to ordering from Japan.
I did a calculation to compare how much it would cost to get the brushes thru CDJ and thru CP with her and it came out to practically the same. I think her quote was actually a couple of dollars cheaper lol. She gives me a spreadsheet of the breakdown of the quote including if there are any domestic shipping fees when she orders the item/s. If I decide to go ahead with the order, she sends me a PP invoice. I pay it and she acquires the items. When she has them, she sends me pics of them and asks if everything looks okay and if I say it is, then she mails out the package. She always keeps in communication which is what I like. It may take a couple of days for her to respond (ie. usually if she is away traveling). This is the 3rd time I have used her services so I hope if anyone here does end up purchasing thru her, they will be satisfied like I have been. ๐
@Bea, I’ve never worried too much about the pp fees when paying Koyudo as the amount really is so nominal in comparison to what I’m spending on brushes ๐ I should pay more attention to these things I guess ;P
I have already sent Tommy the money for the Houkodou set , so now it’s just a matter of waiting. Patience, patience!!! Thanks so much for sharing your CP ๐ After reading Melissa’s comment this morning, I am MORE than thrilled that I’ve been able to order these. I REALLY appreciate the help!
@Buggsiebee: I aim to enable lol. That is also my motto in my nail polish group on FB ๐ Seems like CDJ is shipping quicker? I just got the notice that my Jan 28 order has been sent. My gf just got hers in the mail and she says she “LOVE LOVE LOVE the brushes” lol. She uses the Shu18 brush for foundation so she had ordered the fupa01, fupa02 & fupa08. She ordered Jan 27 and shipped Feb 05 so she got hers in a little less time than I did.
Dear Sonia, how do you think BP033 will compare to BP032 (pine squirrel) and BP031 (japanese mink)? The hair bristles of these three are 15mm long. There are also slightly smaller brushes such as BP034 (japanese mink) and BP035 (pine squirrel), which hair is13mm. What do you think these 2 mm give to the former set in terms of performance?
Hi Anastasiya, I tend to prefer the squirrel and goat brushes better than Pine squirrel, it’s mostly a matter of preference, often it’s an “aesthetic” preference. I am not crazy for the appearance of pine squirrel hair but they perform quite well. The Japanese mink would be also appropriate for cream products and they are more directional (less flexible). You can see more pics here if you like to see how the material differs. The 2mm would mainly be giving you more precision if they are smaller (lid), the BP033 more for crease application. I love smaller brushes for laying down color and bigger ones for blending.
Sometimes you need to try one of each material to find out what would be your own preferences.
I don’t know if that helps a lot…
Hi, can someone please help me on how to order the Houkudou brushes through a 3rd party. I live in Canada and I want the foundation brush. Many thanks.
I ordered mine directly through HOUKODOU, you can contact Tomoko Ihara via email: info@houkodou.jp
Hi Maisy,
you can use Tommy’s services if you wish : http://bringblingjp.blogspot.ch/2008/01/you-will-get-access-to.html
you give her the link, fill in the order and she will contact you with details !
Everyone has their preferences on that.
I found Tommy Setsu to be extremely efficient and easy to work with.
If you Google bring bling jp you’ll find her blog.
All the best on getting the brush you want!
Thanks for your help! ๐
Thank you for all your AMAZING reviews! You’ll never know how much I rely on your opinions! Need a little help, am I correct in assuming the Koyudo BP 016 is for powder only?
Hi Nancie,
Thank you ๐
yes just for powder, it is the SOFTEST and finest goat hair ! a great love !
Hello Sonia! I was just wondering – I am interested in purchasing my first white hair brushes, how do you keep them so white and clean?? White hair is beautiful but I am just worried about staining! Thanks so much!
I don’t have any secret myself, I wash them with “Savon de marseille” or shampoo, rinse them very well, remove the excess water as much as possible and let them dry on their side…
if you use cream products dont leave them dirty for a long time or this may sometimes stain them, other than that, nothing special as you can see ๐
Hi Sonia,
Do you use your fu pa 01 much? Do you use the Sakura 022 more? In thinking the fu pa 01 might be too dense for most blushes so won’t be very practical. What do you think?
Thanks!
Hi, Sonia!
I have a Hakuhodo J110, and I really like it – I was wondering if you could tell me whether the Koyudo BP106 and the LE 30 brush are usable in the same way? When you pick up the J110, you can use the sides of the brush, and the tips of the bristles directly on the face (flat to the face, in a buffing/swirling/patting motion) because its round enough and not too flat. I noticed the LE 30 and the BP016 are thinner. Does that mean you need to use them on the sides only? I do hope I’m making sense. >_<
Hi Alison, You totally make sense ๐ actually that’s why I love this shape so much, but finding the one with the right density and fluffiness and still soft, not that easy!
The BP016 yes, you can use it that way, it’s nearly the same as the J110, slightly less thick but does all what you have in mind ๐
The LE 30 less because it’s flatter and not as dense so you will definitely get more use out of the BP016.
Hello!
Which Koyudo brush do u recommend for cream blush?
Hi Graclyn, I replied to you on facebook, sorry I have been having the notifications of these comments not arriving to me… hmmmm
I know this is an old post but I hope someone can reply to my comment.
Does anyone know where we can find Koyudo brushes in the US or Canada online?
Thanks a bunch
This is a big help. I just bought a set of 5 various brushes when we were in the Hiroshima rail station. The salesperson was helpful, but the set didn’t have a description in English and my memory was on overload by the time we got home. A great tutorial!
