Tom Ford Bronzing powder in Terra

by Sonia G.

Since I love Tom Ford blushes, I could not pass on the bronzer… a huge and extravagant compact with a big amount of product and a price that goes with it.

For this summer, Tom Ford released a shimmer bronzing powder “Gold Dust” and a matte ” Terra” that will both be part of the permanent line.

Terra bronzer

The packaging

It’s a square and heavy compact with rounded edges, the side is 11cm long, approx 1.5cm thick at the center.  Same burgundy color as the blushes. When you open it, you see a big mirror and a lot of bling bling gold, I would have preferred a more sophisticated and subtle coating in the inside, it’s extravagant… a bit too much for my taste. Keep in mind that you may blind someone with this and your prints will be all over the evidence. It does get dirty very quickly, in the inside and the outside.

Tom Ford Blush VS Tom Ford Bronzer

The bronzing powder

Tom Ford puts a high price on his products but you get quantity, so you better love it and use it …
The powder weights 20g. A Nars Laguna bronzer weights 8g and costs 34Usd. A Tom Ford bronzer weights 20g and costs 90Usd.
This TF bronzer contains a bit more product than 2 Nars Laguna bronzers, since I have already hit pan and finish more than 2 Laguna bronzers, I know I will hit pan on this one… some day…
The difference being that before I only had the Nars Laguna, today I think I have way too many bronzers to hit pan on one again…

For better swatches of the bronzers, please have a look at Karla’s swatches, I could not do better than her 🙂

This Terra has no shimmer particles or sparkles whatsoever. The texture does not feel that great and soft when you touch it, but when you play with it and build the application on the back of your hand for example it has some kind of glorious glow and it melts on the skin.

I am NW25, I can use this powder as a contour or as a bronzer. You can apply a very sheer wash or you can build the application but don’t worry, you really have to go crazy and heavy with it to look fake, it did not look muddy or streaky on me at all.
Actually, it doesn’t even feel like a powder finish on the skin, it doesn’t feel heavy, it gives the impression of a sexy artificial silicone coating but in a good way 🙂 I have no idea how to explain this…  if you look at the TF models on Sandra site, you might see what I mean… and also get some more great info on the bronzer. Of course I don’t think you will go so dramatic with the application but you could 😛

This morning, I applied the Terra bronzer on half of my face, I checked in the mirror to see the difference between the side with the bronzer and the one without, this was also to check if the bronzer emphasizes my fine lines.
I waited a few minutes and I checked again, then I called my boyfriend. I asked him on which side of my face he could see more fine lines, he is very good at that and I know he will tell me the truth….
We have the same opinion : the bronzer did not emphasize my fine lines at all, actually, it was doing exactly the opposite, I don’t know how or why but I am happy with that result.

Bottom Line

I think it’s becoming one of my favorite bronzers but I have just been playing with it for a few days. I need a bit more time to really challenge it, I haven’t tried the lasting power enough… I will update this post during the weekend and let you know. Today I felt like I needed to reapply in the afternoon.

You can certainly achieve similar results with many other bronzers, it’s very expensive and that hurts, but you have to consider the quantity of powder it contains and the packaging, well you may not like it but at least they did something interesting 😉

Thanks for this tempting little post:))
Please would you compare this to the Guerlain Terra Azzurra? Which do you find more orange?
I don’t need a swatch, just your opinion.
Thanks! ….and thanks for the Hakuhodo update:)

Hi Buggsiebee ! Guerlain Terra Azzurra is really much more orange on my skin, there is no orange in the TF, I prefer the TF without hesitation !
You are welcome about the Hakuhodo update, EXCITING 🙂
I have some Claudio Riaz brushes on their way to me… I could not help it 🙁 I had to get some… These were on my wishlist for a long time 😛 did you try them already ?

Thanks for the answer…..BUT …..oh dear……I was hoping you wouldn’t say that.
My credit card will explode soon:)

I always heard such contrasting opinions on the Claudio Riaz brushes that I decided to give them a skip. I’m definitely interested in hearing your opinion.

I need to save a bit now though because I KNOW that I will need a LOT of the Guerlain A/W collection and a couple of those Addiction brushes are calling my name…plus the A/W NARS collection is looking good…. and Hakuhodo is also on the horizon!!
Sooooooo many gorgeous goodies to collect.

Sorry … 😉
I have been interested in the Claudio Riaz for a very long time. Like you, I heard contrasting opinions. I still wanted to try them by myself but the thing that triggered the order this time is that I saw they were big and dense, and at this moment I am looking for that kind of brushes. That’s why I am so impatient for the Hakuhodo, these new Hakuhodo seem to be denser and firmer and that’s exactly what I want. I did not order the special Claudio Riaz “instant smoke” with curved bristles, I am not interested in that kind of application and I don’t really see how this can work easily… I picked up the blender, the primer, the contour, the powder, the shade and the instant shadows, they say this one is supposed to allow you a multi-shadow application, I am thinking Le Metier Kaleidoscopes… not that you cannot use any other brush anyway… I really don’t know what to expect, at least I think these are really the ones I would use. I will keep you updated 🙂 I really wanted to try Chikuhodo and Claudio Riaz so that’s nearly finally achieved !

Hello! I need help, please. I would like you to tell which bronzer you like the most: TF gold dust or Nars Laguna. I am nw 25 as you, but i think gold dust is going to be fairer than Laguna, which by the way looks no dark at all on me.

I MUCH APPRECIATE YOUR OPINION.

Thanks a lot.
Kind regards

Hi Maria,
I have finished a few Lagunas already, it was my hg bronzer some years ago 🙂
They are nearly the same shade but the finish is different, Laguna is more glowy/shiny and the TF has micro sparkles all over but the base color is more subtle, despite the micro gold sparkles TF is a bronzer that looks more glamorous and classy than Laguna but this is because the powder is finer and not that obvious “as a coat” if I may say. Today the TF looks better on my skin, it doesn’t emphasize the fine lines as much as the Laguna does.
I am nw25 and the Terra is my favorite for the day, it’s more matte and not too dark, you can build it without it feeling like a coat of bronzer, looks very natural. So my fav for winter is the Terra, my fav for summer is the Gold Dust 🙂

Oooh 6 brushes?? I’m really interested in hearing your opinion.

I don’t believe that one is EVER finished with brushes. There will always be something SUPER original or soft or effective or colorful or colorless being released. Even though I own & love the most perfect brushes I will never stop being interested in what’s new.
Wishing you a fun weekend with your new Chikuhodos:))

So……. did you invest in the new LMdB Pallid Incandescence Kaleidoscope?
I so dislike the promo picture. It totally put me off it’s soooo OTT 80’s!! Been there done that. Not pretty.

I will review the CR asap ! Will try to take nice pictures too. By the way I would be really interested to know what are the brushes you love and use regularly, please if you don’t mind sharing with us, it would be fantastic !!!

So funny, I totally see what you mean about the 80’s… it doesn’t look very “sexy” to me, not sophisticated, well I guess it’s more because of the hair and the lips that I don’t like the look but let’s say I won’t really be lemming this kaleidoscope to try to recreate it… maybe the colors are great but I already have the duo green/lilac from RBR that I love so I would not be needing this one… we’ll see what the reviews sound like, I am trying to keep my money for some brushes at the moment, we can’t have it all right 😛

Ok, so that’s FRUSTRATING!!!
I was just done writing a LONG reply here and then I pushed some wrong key and the entire text has disappeared. Stupid, stupid me!!!!!! As much as I love my brushes, I don’t have the energy to re-write now. Perhaps another time?! Sorry:(

Hi Buggsiebee, Oh no… what a shame that the comment was lost, I was really looking forward to knowing what your favorite brushes are ! there is the Chikuhodo post being published tomorrow, if one day you find the energy to write it again, you could maybe post it in the Chikuhodo topic, or anywhere else.. that would be fantastic ! I am sure it’s going to be dangerous for my wallet but I love your taste so much that I feel I NEED to know 😀 and I am sure many of us would love to know too 😉
Thank you !!! <3

I figured I would add this link if that’s ok? Karla Sugar does a much better job of comparing the two bronzers than I could. It was good for me to read that she ALSO liked and felt like she could use both of the bronzers though, because that was exactly my feeling. You can’t go wrong with either of these – which is a GOOD thing at this price!!
Her complexion is just a bit paler than mine.

I bought this bronzer after reading your review. I never tried such a nice bronzer. You’re right it gives a sexy artificial silicone coating in a very good way:-) Thanks for the review. I live in Switzerland, where do you buy your Tom Ford on the Internet? I can’t find a site who ships to Switzerland.

Thanks Diana, I have tried to purchase from Harrods Uk but they don’t deliver Tom Ford to Switzerland, well, at least not the eyeshadow palettes.
There is Selfridges but the shipping is very expensive.
Otherwise there are some forwarding companies, did you try that ? it can be a bit expensive but sometimes it’s the only way.
I usually buy them when I go to the UK or my friends help me with that.

Hello!! I just have to say I really love this post! So tempted to buy this after all of your pictures. Could you also pretty please post the ingredients list for this? I would love to buy this but I’m afraid of comedogenic ingredients since I’m quite acne prone. I’ll be SO glad if you could although I know what a late comment this is… 🙁

Hi Addison,
I have contacted Tom Ford since I don’t know, I have searched online without success. You are in copy of my email in case they reply to us both 🙂
we’ll see… fingers crossed!

Hi Sonia 🙂
Could you please tell me, do you still like/love this bronzer? I know it is an old post, but I really appreciate your opinion, and I am on the verge of buying this (I cannot try it out, since it is not sold in my country). As far as brushes go, I have yet to disagree with you 😉 And talking about brushes; I read in other reviews that this is less pigmented than general bronzers, so could you please tell me; is it possible to apply this bronzer with a squirrel (red or blue) blush?. Thank you for taking your time. 🙂

Hi Sarah, yes I still use it daily and love it! I use it with any brush, although this bronzer is not powdery, the Chikuhodo Z-9 or MK-2 or similar kind of brushes are totally fine to use it with, you don’t need stronger brushes at all 🙂

Thank you for answering so fast 🙂 I might just order this right away! I like small brushes (cheek brushes) for powder and bronzer, and I simply can’t use a goat brush for everyday use, I need the softness of the squirrel brushes, so it’s important to choose the right products 😉

Btw. I really can’t wait for your review of the new Koyudo red squirrel set – I’ll start saving as soon as this bronzer in mine 😉 I am addicted to the Koyudo red cheek – I find it to be much softer than the Suqqu ones.
